A History of the World in 100 Objects
A History of the World in 100 Objects | Neil MacGregor
15 posts | 9 read | 2 reading | 21 to read
The blockbuster New York Times bestseller and the companion volume to the wildly popular radio series Neil MacGregor has blazed an unusual path to international renown. As director of the British Museum, he organized an exhibit that aimed to tell the history of humanity through the stories of one hundred objects made, used, venerated, or discarded by man. The exhibit and its accompanying BBC radio series broke broadcasting records and MacGregors book became a bestselling sensation on both sides of the Atlantic and a huge Christmas hit, with more than 100,000 copies in print in the United States alone. Examining items from a chopping tool from Africas Olduvai Gorge to the credit card, A History of the World in 100 Objects is an engrossing and profoundly original work of history that will captivate readers for many years to come.

This is actually a reread for me, mostly just because it's soothing and I couldn't remember which objects got picked!

This week I‘m working on this book that‘s been on my bookshelf for 3 YEARS for an upcoming minisode about the books we hold onto forever and never seem to read #shelfcleanout #tbr Do you find yourself owning a lot of unread books? What makes you keep them?

KateFulfordAuthor This was an excellent series when broadcast - here in the UK on BBC Radio 4 - suspect it went out on the World Service too. 7y
1001BooksPodcast @KateFulfordAuthor I bought this at the British museum on vacation 😊 7y
Crazeedi Oooh, I'm thinking this looks awesome 7y
1001BooksPodcast @Crazeedi it was a little dry but still pretty interesting 7y

I started out reading the book, which was dry and a little difficult. Then I downloaded and listened to the podcasts. I went back and forth between the two and it made for faster progress and was very motivating. Some objects and histories were more interesting than others. Normally I am not interested in modern history but the more modern and recent the objects were, the more interesting I found them to be.

Sace @julesG it's one of those projects that starts fast then as it gets bigger starts to drag. But it lots of mindless knitting which is so perfect for audiobooks. 8y

Wait! I take back the DNF review! I even deleted that review. Now that I've found the podcasts to download I'm treating this like an audiobook. Carry on...

Dogearedcopy I started listening to the podcast years ago; but hit derailed. I think I would like to have the podcast *and* the book on hand (for the illustrations)... 8y
Sace @Dogearedcopy it's definitely an improvement having both. Just reading wasn't doing it for me and I think it's nice to be able to refer back to a picture. For the most part the text of the book and the podcast is identical. 8y

Tomorrow is my last day of vacation. This is the TBR pile I compiled before the vacay started. I read some things and also went "off-stack" (two books at the top got cut off.) More proof that I should never plan my reading. Ever.

RadicalReader @Sace that is that way to organize a TBR list 8y
Sace @RadicalReader 😂😂 TBR-I'm doing it right! 8y
minkyb Love the visual! 8y

Sace Thanks @minkyb! I think next time I should avpud prestacking and just do a "here are the books I read" stack after. 8y
ReadingEnvy But hey you read some books from that stack! 8y
Sace @ReadingEnvy I'm pretty happy about it. Normally I'm like "ok. Here's the plan. SQUIRREL!" and NOTHING gets read. 8y
TheBookHippie Oh I love those Peck books!!! I never follow my plan...ha I always get distracted by a new pretty cover! 8y
Sace @TheBookHippie luckily those are from my school's library. The librarian is my buddy and she lets me keep books forever. 😊 8y
kspenmoll Peck's books are wonderful! You accomplished alot! 😃 8y
ReadingEnvy @Sace yeah this is why I never make a plan because suddenly those books are the last things I want to read! 8y
Sace @ReadingEnvy exactly! 8y

Object 15- Early Writing Tablet

"It is emphatically not great literature; it is about beer and the birth of bureaucracy."

?????

Lcsmcat I love how mundane most of the extant cuneiform is! 8y
Laura317 😂 Alcohol to deal with the bureaucracy? 8y
Sace @Lcsmcat Yes! It's cracking me up that bean counting predates pretty much everything. 8y

Does it count as a library haul if it's just one book? (I wanted an excuse to use a sticker.)

(is there such a thing as too many Litsy posts? What's the etiquette?)

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I kind of spammed today with the Battle of the Books competition, but Litsy as an entity is pretty allowing. No worries. 8y
Sace @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I didn't think it was spam at all! Highly entertaining. I'm jealous our school system doesn't do something similar. 8y

When you're older and get married, your SO will have their own furniture. And you're going to have some hard conversations. And you're going to make them feel better by keeping a couple of pieces of their ugly furniture - like the nightstand that was bought off the street in the Bronx, with the WFAN bumper sticker on it. 15 years later when you still own it, you're going to regret it because you've realized this is critical furniture #bookpyramid

Hello Littens! October is History Month here in the Netherlands. I am very passionate about history, mainly classical and early medieval history. In honour of #historymonth I will post a bookpair every Wednesday and Saturday. One book is a theoretical history book the other a modern novel or a piece of historical literature to go with the theorie. If you want to join me in the celebration of history post your history books with #historymonth !

I-read-and-eat Tonight I will post the first pair! And if you join me, please tagg me I would love to see your picks! 📖🍁🍂 8y

Linsy Ooh, that sounds so fun! I think I'll join you! ... Even though I've never been anywhere near the Netherlands, lol. 8y
I-read-and-eat @tricours @LeahBergen @ABookishPixie Please all join in! I have a very Eurocentric collection of history books, and most of it pre 1700, so I am very curious to get a broader perspective! 8y
Eyelit Sounds really cool! 8y
tricours I have packed away all my books for moving, won't get them out until after the 15th sometime 😕 But I have a book about 17th century executioners in Sweden that I really want to read! 8y
I-read-and-eat @tricours That sound so interesting. Too bad I can't read Swedish. Might be time to learn 😉 8y
tricours If you're Dutch it shouldn't be too difficult! Seems to take most ppl 3 months or so (Scandinavian to Dutch or Dutch to Scandinavian!) 8y

Look up the BBC4 podcast! The director of the British Museum eloquently describes and explains each object, the reason it was chosen and the historical context. Aside from his horribly pleasing Queen's English, it's a brilliant way to take 15mins off your commute AND improve your anthropology!

KimHM Excellent recommendation, thanks! 8y
