Mockingjay | Suzzane Collins
The greatly anticipated final book in the New York Times bestselling Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.Who do they think should pay for the unrest?Katniss Everdeen. The final book in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins will have hearts racing, pages turning, and everyone talking about one of the biggest and most talked-about books and authors in recent publishing history!!!!Amazon.com ReviewProduct DescriptionAgainst all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she's made it out of the bloody arena alive, she's still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what's worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss's family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins's groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year.A Q&A with Suzanne Collins, Author of *Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games)*Q: You have said from the start that The Hunger Games story was intended as a trilogy. Did it actually end the way you planned it from the beginning? A: Very much so. While I didn't know every detail, of course, the arc of the story from gladiator game, to revolution, to war, to the eventual outcome remained constant throughout the writing process. Q: We understand you worked on the initial screenplay for a film to be based on The Hunger Games. What is the biggest difference between writing a novel and writing a screenplay?A: There were several significant differences. Time, for starters. When you're adapting a novel into a two-hour movie you can't take everything with you. The story has to be condensed to fit the new form. Then there's the question of how best to take a book told in the first person and present tense and transform it into a satisfying dramatic experience. In the novel, you never leave Katniss for a second and are privy to all of her thoughts so you need a way to dramatize her inner world and to make it possible for other characters to exist outside of her company. Finally, there's the challenge of how to present the violence while still maintaining a PG-13 rating so that your core audience can view it. A lot of things are acceptable on a page that wouldn't be on a screen. But how certain moments are depicted will ultimately be in the director's hands. Q: Are you able to consider future projects while working on The Hunger Games, or are you immersed in the world you are currently creating so fully that it is too difficult to think about new ideas?A: I have a few seeds of ideas floating around in my head but--given that much of my focus is still on The Hunger Games--it will probably be awhile before one fully emerges and I can begin to develop it. Q: The Hunger Games is an annual televised event in which one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts is forced to participate in a fight-to-the-death on live TV. What do you think the appeal of reality television is--to both kids and adults? A: Well, they're often set up as games and, like sporting events, there's an interest in seeing who wins. The contestants are usually unknown, which makes them relatable. Sometimes they have very talented people performing. Then there's the voyeuristic thrillwatching people being humiliated, or brought to tears, or suffering physically--which I find very disturbing. There's also the potential for desensitizing the audience, so that when they see real tragedy playing out on, say, the news, it doesn't have the impact it should.Q: If you were forced to compete in the Hunger Games, what do you think your special skill would be? A: Hiding. I'd be scaling those trees like Katniss and Rue. Since I was trained in sword-fighting, I guess my best hope would be to get hold of a rapier if there was one available. But the truth is I'd probably get about a four in Training.Q: What do you hope readers will come away with when they read The Hunger Games trilogy?A: Questions about how elements of the books might be relevant in their own lives. And, if they're disturbing, what they might do about them. Q: What were some of your favorite novels when you were a teen?A: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine LEngle Lord of the Flies by William Golding Boris by Jaapter Haar Germinal by Emile Zola Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury (Photo Cap Pryor)From School Library JournalGr 7 UpThe final installment of Suzanne Collins's trilogy sets Katniss in one more Hunger Game, but this time it is for world control. While it is a clever twist on the original plot, it means that there is less focus on the individual characters and more on political intrigue and large scale destruction. That said, Carolyn McCormick continues to breathe life into a less vibrant Katniss by showing her despair both at those she feels responsible for killing and and at her own motives and choices. This is an older, wiser, sadder, and very reluctant heroine, torn between revenge and compassion. McCormick captures these conflicts by changing the pitch and pacing of Katniss's voice. Katniss is both a pawn of the rebels and the victim of President Snow, who uses Peeta to try to control Katniss. Peeta's struggles are well evidenced in his voice, which goes from rage to puzzlement to an unsure return to sweetness. McCormick also makes the secondary characterssome malevolent, others benevolent, and many confusedvery real with distinct voices and agendas/concerns. She acts like an outside chronicler in giving listeners just the facts but also respects the individuality and unique challenges of each of the main characters.

The divergence of opinions between my teenage vs. adult self showed drastically while reading Mockingjay. While I had admiration for Gale eleven years ago, I found myself seeing toxic traits in his character and disliked him tremendously. I was also shocked how wrapped up my teenage self was in the love triangle aspect of the book, which overshadowed the powerful heroine I appreciated in later life. It is an epic conclusion to a powerful trilogy.

slategreyskies I find it really shocking as well to see how much my views have changed from when I read something the first time around to when I read it ten or twenty years later. It amazes me that I could be that different. I like that about me, but still. Shocking. 6mo
TieDyeDude I read this series for the first time in my 30s. My expectations are usually low for ultra-popular YA series, but I was surprised at how complex this was. I'm glad you got something new from the re-read. 6mo

It‘s a good story but I didn‘t love it as much as the others. A lot of the time Katniss is being held back due to her celebrity status. This made her feel safer, so there was less tension. I still enjoyed it and the twist at the end.

The conclusion of this trilogy. I would say that the beginning of the story was a little bit repetitive and I was a little bored..but then...the action began..and...the end😢I really enjoyed this trilogy. So good. 4⭐️One of those that you keep thinking about the story and that ending after you finished it. Fantastic narrator. That‘s my Hunger Ganes tote bag😍

I'll tell them how I survive it. I'll tell them that on bad mornings, it feels impossible to take pleasure in anything because I'm afraid it could be taken away. That's when I make a list in my head of every act of goodness I've seen someone do. It's like a game. Repetitive. Even a little tedious after more than twenty years.
But there are much worse games to play.

That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that.
So after, when he whispers, "You love me. Real or not real?"
I tell him, "Real."

Book #3 in the series. People can be so evil to others. And without big rewards for that really. Lots of fighting in this one, emotional trauma too. I wish there was a 4th book, but the epilogue at the end was nice. In reading these there was so much I‘d forgotten from when they first came out & from the movies. I‘ll have to rewatch the movies now to see how different they are.

Liked this one more than Catching Fire, but not as much as Hunger Games. Can we talk about Finnick? How about Gale? Haymitch? Can we talk about e v e r y o n e?
Looking at reviews, the ending is pretty controversial. But I really enjoyed it. Probably helped that I read them all back to back, so there was no waiting to learn more.

Not me crying & doing squats when Buttercup came back to her. It's fine. I'm fine.

I think you could use this book, or any of the others in the trilogy to create different creative writing prompts. There are also a lot of different story elements you could discuss within these stories.

I‘m going to reveal something here, I don‘t like this book, in fact I kind of hate it. Don‘t get me wrong I love this series with my whole heart but every time I reread this one I just feel sad. It was a well written book but the ending isn‘t good enough. Its not enough to make up for everything Suzanne Collins put us through in this book. All the pain and loss I went through while reading this, was for nothing. I like the book but STILL.

1) When someone, especially when that someone I‘m absolutely sure isn‘t a reader, interrupts my reading to ask what I‘m reading or what it‘s about. And especially when I know if I try to explain it they won‘t understand it or really care anyway. I generally want them to just go away lol…

2) I would buy the first book I saw in Strand, then all the others and then the building itself.

★★★★½

The final book in The Hunger Games series. I have to say I was not completely satisfied with it. After reading The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, my expectations were very high for Mockingjay. It just wasn‘t the strong ending to the series that I was anticipating. The first half of the book focused primarily on the politics of it all. Which wasn‘t a bad thing, but it lacked the action and intensity that was present in the other books.

beenbee I agree, catching fire was the best book in the series and this book was disappointing. 3y

First reread in ~7 years and 1st read in English. THG was ahead of its time and it still holds up. It‘s interesting how my taste has changed, I like the ending of #Mockingjay a lot more and I understand a lot better why Peeta was the best choice for Katniss. I hope THG will soon get the renaissance it deserves.

#unpopularopinion Disappointed. I understand the PTSD stuff, but Katniss is so uninspiring in this one -- where's the kickass heroine we all fell in love with in the first book? Also, why does almost every major event take place somewhere else, so Katniss can't even witness it, let alone take part?
And I'm not really happy with the ending. It might be realistic but I was expecting something more uplifting.

In the Mockingjay, Katniss Everdeen was rescued from playing in the Quarter Quell. She then finds herself in District 13, that was supposedly destroyed. Katniss‘s home, District 12 was destroyed and turned into rubble. Peeta has been brainwashed while he was being kept in the Capital. Katniss is then put in the middle of a huge rebellion.

Camryn_VandenBroeke She is considered the “Mockingjay”, their saving grace. Peeta‘s memory has been tampered with, so he acts out against Katniss. She finds that she is having a hard time choosing between Peeta and her childhood friend, Gale. Katniss fights against the Capitol and ends up winning. She loses friends along the way but she learns from mistakes and gains the upper hand against the Capitol. 3y
Camryn_VandenBroeke In the end she moves back to her home in District 12, as it survived the attack from the Capitol, and lives with Peeta and Haymitch. If you like books that have romance, heartbreak, and action all together this is the book for you. Mockingjay is in the first person point of view, Katniss Everdeen tells her story. She shows her emotions and her experience throughout the novel. 3y
Camryn_VandenBroeke This book was one of the three novels: Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay. This one wasn‘t my favourite but it was still good! 3y

Got me to tear up at the end, epilogue more so.

As someone with mental illness- anxiety and depression, I identified with Katniss and her PTS. It‘s a tragic story, but in the end there‘s still hope. And as long as we have that, there‘s something worth living for.

If you like books that are filled with betrayal, drama and intense action that will leave you on the edge of your seat, then this is the book for you!

Ella.Torres After Katniss is rescued from the Quarter Quell arena and District 12 is demolished, District 13 comes out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. In the final book of The Hunger Games series, the revolution continues to unfold, and Katniss is experiencing pressure from District 13‘s leaders to be the Mockingjay. 4y
Ella.Torres Becoming the figurehead for the revolution that her defiance against the Capitol has helped spark is a role that Katniss isn‘t sure she can manage, as it means that she is accountable for many people who depend on her to alter the future of Panem.
4y
Ella.Torres Mockingjay is written in the first-person point of view, so for better or for worse, Katniss continues to be the narrator. First-person point of view uses pronouns such as “I”, “we”, “us” and “our”. Collins, the author, establishes the first-person point of view by presenting Katniss‘ thoughts and unique interpretations of the other characters and society. 4y
Ella.Torres This makes the story feel personal and allows readers to connect with the main character. However, with that said, readers are limited to only knowing what is going on in her mind.
4y
MissYaremcio Nicely done Ella! It seems like the Hunger Games is a popular series this year! 6/6 4y

Spoiler alert! Why do I love these books so much!?
Mockingjay was slow to start but as soon as the action begun, I absolutely flew through the last half of the book, the scene with the lizards actually scared me which doesn‘t normally happen for me when I read. I have since started reading The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes which also somehow takes a normally flat and boring character and makes them interesting.
