I really enjoyed this science-fiction novel even though it wasn't exactly heavy on the science. Lots of focus on character instead.

In a near future world ravaged by climate change, a group of female astronauts take matters into their own hands after women are excluded from the space program. A thought-provoking & sometimes tense read, but the kind of book that had me arguing with the author half the time. I can't say much more without spoilers, just that I wish a few things had gone differently. Definitely passes the Bechdel test, though! (But The Handmaid's Tale it is not.)

It is all to easy to believe Lam‘s version of the future, with some of her predictions already coming true. A rollercoaster of a sci-fi story, some of it will keep me thinking for a long time.

I thought the premise sounded great, but sadly this just wasn‘t for me. I thought there was too much telling rather than showing, and still there were certain things that I felt needed more explanation to feel believable, but they just didn‘t get much explanation. I found it more entertaining towards the end when the pace picked up, but I still had so many questions of how and why that I never fully got on board with what was happening.

monalyisha Aw, bummer! I thought the premise sounded interesting, too! 3y

This a dark, intense read that keeps you guessing and takes some weird and unexpected turns. A group of women steal a spaceship set for the colonisation of a new planet. It does get a bit gloomy but it will definitely motivate you to do your recycling! 😬

TrishB I have a real brick wall about books set in space 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ 4y
julesG This was really good. Made me read Seven Devils afterwards. 4y
MsMelissa OMG. I have this book and bought it because I thought it was non-fiction about potential planets in the “Goldilock‘s” zone of stars. I must have totally mixed it up with another book. Good thing I enjoy science fiction 😂 4y

I really enjoyed it, and yet I‘m not totally sure a pandemic with our national political upheaval is the best time to read this one? A bit too real with the anti woman regime, the climate change, etc. That said I would recommend it, and very much appreciate that the author put a lot into the science in this sci fi thriller!

Book, a blanket, and a pumpkin spice latte- feeling kind of hygge up in here. This was a slow start - mostly my attention span is to blame. But now I‘m 163 pages in and don‘t want to put it down. Alas 3 year olds don‘t really sleep in so I will have to call it for tonight.

A competent space thriller and a gripping personal drama. For all it has to say about the patriarchy and climate change, I think it's at its strongest in examining the relationships between children and parents, and in asking what it takes to step out of their shadow - both as individuals, as as a species.

2 @squirrelbrain - Helen not only sent me a package of tea some months back, which keeps me going, but she checked in on me (virtually) and made me realise there are people out there who notice when I'm unusually quiet

I wanted to sit outside and read. The #GhostCat, though, wanted to play with the garlic greens and managed to turn over the planter.
While I was cleaning up this mess, #ShadowCat decided to overthrow a cactus.

What has got into my cats today?

All female astronaut crew? Count me in.

I enjoyed this one. The way women were viewed and treated is something that could easily happen in the future (and not in a good way). That, along with the way Earth was dying... it made for a very believable setting.

I enjoyed the characters for the most part. I loved how there was a villain aspect, it really added a unique layer. I didn‘t care for how the timeline however; it jumped around a bit too much

#JoysOfJune #readathon @Andrew65

It's nearly 10.30am, we have muggy 24°C with the sun making a few casual appearances.

#GhostCat is enjoying her new lookout. I will have to beg the new neighbours for another piece of scrap wood so #ShadowCat can have his own seat. The lady doesn't want to share.

I'm trying to read my tagged buddyread while my daughter is playing cards with her best friend.

Also in the picture, my tentative TBR for today.

VeganCleopatra Is that a net I see to keep the cats safe? 5y
See All 14 Comments
julesG @VeganCleopatra It is. We live on the second floor (US: third), it's for their protection, especially when wasps, pigeons and squirrels tempt them, and my peace of mind. I like to leave the balcony door open all day in summer, so they can go outside to watch the sunrise while I turn around in bed. 😉 5y
VeganCleopatra It works well then? I'm a worry wart so I'd constantly be worried. Do they try to climb it etc? 5y
julesG @VeganCleopatra They don't climb it, it's not tight enough (on purpose). One of the cats managed to scale the wooden board I attached the net too and sat on the concrete wall dividing my balcony from that of the neighbours. When she jumped back she was on the other side of the net and my heart was in my throat. I managed to get her back onto the safe side and immediately secured the small gap at the top of the net. No more chance of escape now. 5y
julesG @VeganCleopatra I check the net for gaps once a week now. 5y
VeganCleopatra 😱 she probably thought nothing of it too! 5y
julesG @VeganCleopatra She's a lioness in mini format. She loves hunting wasps, bumblebees and hornets. She got stung by wasps so often last year. She's fierce. 5y
VeganCleopatra She was ok after being stung or does that require a vet visit? Is she the one in the photo above or no? 5y
julesG Yes, she's the little lion queen in the picture. Seal point siamese mix. Cuddly and fierce. She didn't need the vet after the wasp sting. One time she had a swollen chin, then the next day she had a giant paw. But she won't leave the wasps alone. 5y
julesG @VeganCleopatra see above. 🤦‍♀️ Also, I cooled the stings, when the lady let me, and she was right as rain within 24 hours. 5y
VeganCleopatra She sounds and is absolutely adorable...but clearly is a pain in the butt (said with love 😏). She let you ice her face and paw? Surprising. Ah, I miss having a cat. 5y
julesG @VeganCleopatra It's not like icing a sprain, more like getting her to sit down with me and then trying to put a cold cloth on it for more than 2 milli-seconds. 😁 5y

Having always been fascinated by space and the possibility of escaping our world edging closer and closer to environmental catastrophe, this book offered relatively realistic plot and interesting character development (which I know stems from the author's space research and scientific sources mentioned in the afterword). I loved the twists in this one, the darkness I hadn't suspected in the slower beginning. Definitely worth checking out!

Just finished reading this book. I probably would have stayed up all night, but for once I decided to be sensible and get some sleep. This book is firmly science-fiction, but *definitely* seems like something that could happen. Plus there were some plot twists that I did not see coming, so yay! Artemis even gets a shoutout!

“They all knew of the Mercury 13. In the mid-twentieth century, at the same time as the Mercury 7 had all the fame for being space flight pioneers, thirteen women had tested just as well if not better than the men on the aptitude tests. But they‘d never reached space, even after bringing their case all the way to a congressional hearing”. **i know a fair amount of space travel and this was literally brand new information to me **

Eye-opening, thrilling, & timely, I devoured this book. Naomi has a real depth to her, adding a human aspect to a book about space travel & saving humanity.

Taking place in a near distant future, Earth is quickly becoming inhabitable & President Cochran has brought sexism to the White House, costing women everywhere their jobs.

The world had found a Goldilocks planet in a nearby galaxy & 5 female astronauts decide to commandeer the ship there.

Lady astronauts saving humanity [insert mic drop here] That was all it took for me. But wait! There‘s more!
“Take a little jaunt to Mars and its shiny new warp ring. Fold space and time. Travel ten and a half light years. Establish a hardy colony on an alien planet. Wait for Earth to build the ships to start ferrying people across. Save humanity. Sounds doable enough, right?”
Tons of plot twists, feminist themes. Fun read. Thanks #netgalley!
