#IdiomInsight
The term #DimeADozen came from the mid 1800s when things like eggs were often sold as a dozen for a dime. This was a favorite book & movie of mine growing up as this family tried to do everything economically & efficiently, both financially & in processes.
This week‘s episode of my book podcast brings you *exactly* the kind of conversation I most love having you on the show and I cannot wait for you to listen and share your thoughts. Jake Maia Arlow joins me to discuss CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, the book that inspired a slew of movies and yet bears little resemblance to them. We cover everything from YouTube bros and the Duggars to dad jokes and big families. Listen at the link in my bio!
I remember loving this when we read it in 8th grade, but now it feels so foreign and antiquated to me. I'm assuming we had a bit of help when we read it, as everything pertains to life in the early 20th century but I'm not really enjoying it too much. 🤷♀️

I loved Cheaper by the Dozen when I read it as a kid- we did not have a dozen but we had 10 including my parents.
I am grateful for all of my family- my sibs, my husband & son, my nieces & nephews, my cats. ❤️❤️
Here is my #Booked2020 #secondquarterentry since I don't think I will finish any more prompts before next week!! Found four books this quarter!!

The Gilbreth family in Cheaper by the Dozen lives in Montclair, NJ, one town over from where i grew up. Throughout grad school, I worked in Montclair and @mollyrotondo and i frequent Montclair when the world isn't shut down due to covid

This is an old favorite of mine that I hadn't revisited in several years. A memoir of sorts, two of Frank Gilbreth's 12 children tell about their childhood. Gilbreth is a fascinating man, self-educated, brilliant, boisterous, challenging. His wife, Lillian, was a PhD who didn't allow a dozen pregnancies to stop her from partnering with her husband throughout his career, and carrying on with his work when he died.

This #weeklyforecast is mostly hoping to actually finish my #BookSpinBonanza books from May!!! Until we get down to the Peretti books they are all pretty short, so I am actually cautiously optimistic that I can get through a lot of these this week!! A couple of them are now doubling as #ReadYourSign picks as well!!
@Cinfhen
It was ok. Very quick read. Their father was a lot stricter than I imagined but then again I don‘t read a lot of stuff set so far in past. Maybe that was normal for the times.
Started my first #bookspin pick today. ❤️. Ok so far. Only 28 pages in
I needed a break from The Line of Beauty and this is so chuckle-worthy and adorable!
I just recently got this but I had no idea it was a book. #readingresolutions 📖🎬
Day 3 of #tarottakeover Today for the Empress card, I chose Cheaper by the Dozen. It is about a family that really did have 12 children, and is written by two of them. I have to admit I haven't read the whole book, but I have seen the original movie that tells the story of this family and they had many adventures!

Our first #montclairreads pick is Cheaper by the Dozen! Get your tee copy at the circulation desk. montclairlibrary.org/montclairreads
My other favorite part of this book was what a time capsule it was! The kids get whooping cough, photo taking was a huge and loud production, and not only are there flappers but also "sheiks" and Joe College was somehow a thing. Most shocking to me was the discussion of women's underwear and the actual hairstyle in these photos! It was discussed as an option for women who didn't have the short flapper bob.
A friend who studies efficiency recommended this book, and the thoughts on how to efficiently run a factory or a family were my favorite parts. The dad initially seemed like an awful tyrant but I'd somewhat warmed to him & enjoyed the last chapter. As a warning, everything about race in this book, which takes place about 100 years ago, is a best cringeworthy & more often very offensive 😓😬😠😮
I don‘t quite know why it was so tricky to find books on my shelves with #Cars on the cover. 🤔 (I‘ve always had a fondness for this vintage cover, though).

I read this book ages ago while growing up-as one of eight, it resonated with me.
I thought of doing Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley for today, but used it for another challenge recently. So I‘ll go with a childhood favorite - I remember loving this book. Wonder how it holds up? #day12 #novemberbythenumbers
#NovemberByTheNumbers #twelve @JoeStalksBeck @Tiffy_Reads I didn‘t read the book , but I often chilled out on a Sunday and watched this one 👍
#NovemberByTheNumbers I'm having so much fun with this challenge @JoeStalksBeck @Tiffy_Reads For day #12 I chose this hilarious memoir featuring the Gilbreth family, a unique household containing #12 siblings and a set of genius parents in the early /mid 1900's! This family was the inspiration for the films Cheaper By The Dozen😊😍
I always forget how long ago the events of CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN took place, until I reach a passage like this (side note: I worship Lillian Gilbreth more with every reading).
What a happy book full of hilarious stories of a one of a kind family.
Four dolla, no holla! Small score at the local Habitat Restore. Had to grab the Bobbie Ann Mason since she's a native Kentucky gal and ❤️ her books! 📚✌📚✌#Bookhaul
Looks like there is a super e-book sale on Tuesday! I saw this at the end of my Goodreads deals alert! 💰💰💰💰💰💰📚📚📚📚📚📚
"When Mother returned, she asked him if everything had run smoothly.
Didn't have any trouble except with that one over there,' he replied. 'But a spanking brought him into line.'
Mother could handle any crisis without losing her composure.
That's not one of ours, dear,' she said. 'He belongs next door."

As the oldest of six children, I can certainly relate to the craziness of life in the Gilbreth household. I don't think there is another book that has made me laugh out loud like this one. There are so many hilarious moments...like the time the lady from Planned Parenthood showed up...or how Mr. Gilbreth names the pet birds "Shut Up" and "You Heard Me". Classic!!! #augustphotochallenge #funnybooks @TheSpinecrackersBookClub
