I will never look at parking the same way again. I think the title is a bit wrong, it should be “Explains North America”.

This was a fun book if you're a fan of the show. Porter worked for “New Top Gear“ as the script editor during all the seasons that Clarkson, May, and Hammond were the presenters. The book is roughly linear but divided into very short chapters that each kind of read like their own little essay, so at times it felt a little abrupt, but also meant that it was easy to delve in and out of. As you'd expect, the writing is a bit snarky and entertaining⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Porter presents his coworkers, including the three famous presenters, with a fairly even hand, and the book feels genuinely informative/entertaining and not like its trying to cash in on scandalous memoirs, even when he discusses the abrupt ending of the show (in that incarnation). I'm not British, so some of the references went over my head (TV shows “everyone“ watched or people more famous there than here), but overall this was ⬇ 3w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) readable and enjoyable - if you like the show, you'll probably find this engaging as well.

This was my #BookSpin for April 🎉

InkedBookworm13 This is awesome. I just ordered it for my husband. We used to watch the original Top Gear all the time. 😍 3w
TheAromaofBooks @lil1inblue @InkedBookworm13 - My biggest issue with the book was that Porter seems to assume that I already know who some people are (i.e. famous racecar drivers, actors, British politicians) so some of his stories kind of went over my head. But overall there is a lot of fun stuff here and an interesting perspective. 3w
Jari-chan Oh, we had so much fun with Top Gear 😁 3w
Roary47 I‘ll have to get this for my husband to not read, and then read it for him. 😅 3w

Sad events of a misguided youth in urban Detroit around 1960. Alex lives with his alcoholic dad who works 2nd shift at a car factory. I enjoyed the ups and downs of the book, cheering for Alex, hoping he would make it through his hardships to lead a good life. He is a complex character with a complicated history. The story takes place over the course of about a school year, but has many flashbacks giving the characters tangible depth.

Sace I just read the description of this book. I may have to read it but I wonder if it will just anger me. 1mo
Pogue @Sace I don‘t know, parking lots anger me as it is. Such a waste of land. My book club picked it. I am very excited for the discussion. 1mo
Sace Just the description angered me! It seems like a great book club pick though! 1mo

Mmm, experimental ! Good for Ballard that he doesn‘t give a monkey‘s. Written in the 70s too, wow. Not for the fainthearted.

1. No, I don‘t. I also don‘t drive because I don‘t know how to drive.

2. The only book I‘ve read that features a car that I would recommend reading is the tagged book. It‘s very creepy how the car comes to life and how the people driving the car become different people. It‘s a long time from now but this book would be perfect for spooky season. It‘s not a very long book either.

#two4tuesday Thanks @lynneamch for the tag!

1) Absolutely and I miss driving a stick shift. My little 1969 VW bug I named Bobert. Loved that little car. We had a lot of good times together

2) I drove Bobert in high school (early 1980s) so of course my fave author from those days was Stephen King, which means I thought of Christine and Cujo!
