Greatest Knight: The Unsung Story of the Queen's Champion
Greatest Knight: The Unsung Story of the Queen's Champion | Elizabeth Chadwick
30 posts | 27 read | 41 to read
New York Times and USA Today Bestseller!Royal protector. Loyal servant. Forgotten hero. A penniless young knight with few prospects, William Marshal is plucked from obscurity when he saves the life of Henry II's formidable queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine. In gratitude, she appoints him tutor to the heir to the throne, the volatile and fickle Prince Henry. But being a royal favorite brings its share of danger and jealousy as well as fame and reward.A writer of uncommon historical integrity and accuracy, Elizabeth Chadwick resurrects the true story of one of England's greatest forgotten heroes in a captivating blend of fact and fiction. The Greatest Knight restores William Marshal to his rightful place at the pinnacle of the Middle Ages, reflecting through him the triumphs, scandals, and power struggles that haven't changed in eight hundred years.WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ELIZABETH CHADWICK AND THE GREATEST KNIGHT: The Greatness of William Marshal: The descendants of the Greatest Knight himself include George Washington and Winston Churchill, as well as the Stuart kings of England and Scotland. He was partly responsible for the Magna Carta. He vowed his body to the Templars and is buried in Temple Church in London. The Appeal of the Time Period: There are very few novels about Marshal, and no one has covered him as in depth as Elizabeth Chadwick has. In addition, unlike the Tudor era, there are not extensive amounts of historical fiction set in the 13th century. The Integrity of the Research: Elizabeth Chadwick's research is impeccable. She not only visited many locations, but she re-enacted with a living history society where a quarter of the membership are either historians or archaeologists, and she collected and used replica artifacts from the period and engaged in experimental archaeology. She has taken courses in various medieval studies to facilitate her knowledge. The Breadth of the Audience: Readers who are fans of Sharon Kay Penman, Anya Seton, Diana Gabaldon, Phillipa Gregory, and Jean Plaidy will like Elizabeth Chadwick. She appeals to readers who are looking for historical accuracy and strong, believable characters, readers who want to feel that they are being immersed in the period with well-rounded characters.PRAISE FOR ELIZABETH CHADWICK: Chadwick's novel immerses readers in Marshal's life and times, which should prove intriguing to any fan of historical fiction. The royals, and especially Eleanor, are particularly fascinating characters whom Chadwick employs to great effect. Publishers Weekly"The best writer of medieval fiction currently around." Richard Lee, founder of the Historical Novel Society"The reader is well aware on every page that this is life as it was lived eight hundred years ago, yet the characters are a fresh and natural as if they were living in the present time..." The Historical Novels Review "There's no better writer of medieval fiction than the marvelous Elizabeth Chadwick." Lancashire Evening Post"Elizabeth Chadwick is a gifted novelist and a dedicated researcher; it doesn't get any better than that." Sharon Kay Penman, bestselling author of Devil's Brood "

I finished this Jan #roll100 pick yesterday, with about 7 mins left in Jan 😆

Very much enjoyed, it's been a while since I read Chadwick or much historical fiction. This covers a good part of William Marshal's life, so there are quite a few time jumps and some parts are covered pretty quickly. I'll have to check out her other books on Marshal.

Loved this. The 1st in a trilogy of William Marshall, this is one of my favourite time periods of medieval history. Elizabeth Chadwick is new to me & I got this book from a list of 100 best medieval books. I think I like Sharon K. Penman more, but this was fantastic. The characters, scenery & day to day life are vivid. She is more of a “romance” writer than Penman, but well worth the read & I am off to my library to get the 2nd book. 4.5/5

MsMelissa I love Elizabeth Chadwick and this is my favourite of her novels. I‘m so glad to see she has a new fan 😊 3y
CindiB Yes @MsMelissa and there are several too which is nice! 3y

#keepLitsyactive #historybooks

In response to @ljuliel ‘s question about history books and periods I like, I much prefer historical fiction (one of my favourite genres) but do read the odd historical non fiction book. The Greatest Knight, and William Marshall story, is one of my favourites. Medieval fiction is my favourite but read most periods. Favourite authors Elizabeth Chadwick, Ken Follet, Sharon Kay Penman, C.J. Sansom, Bernard Cornwell.

ljuliel Great answer, Andrew ! 5y
Eggbeater I'm a big fan of Ken Follet and Bernard Cornwell. 5y

Crazeedi Have this on my shelf, have not read it yet! Love this period 5y
Andrew65 @lost.in.a.book Elizabeth Chadwick is a great author and there is a short series about William Marshall. @Crazeedi 5y
DrexEdit Sharon Kay Penman is on my list; specifically The Sunne in Splendour. I hope it's a stand alone? I dislike starting a book and finding out later it's the middle of a series! 😊 5y
Andrew65 @DrexEdit I love that book! Yes it is a standalone. 5y

So grateful for books and Littens who unknowingly enable my book buying 😂❤️ Thanks @TrishB for posting about the Chadwick (couldn't find the bundle since I'm not in the US but this book was 99 cents 🇨🇦 so I grabbed it) and @nitalibrarian for posting about the Raven Tower sale!

This was between a pick and a so-so, but I‘m feeling generous today. It was alright, and I loved William Marshal. But the pacing felt a little off, to me. Almost every chapter was set some years after the previous, and it was only towards the end of the book we actually starting getting more into the details. It felt like Chadwick was trying to do too much, and it all got a bit superficial 🤷‍♀️

#BabyitsColdOutside, and I have bought the last Christmas presents, and I might have drunk a tad too much wine and champagne yesterday celebrating a friend. So now I‘m curled up on the couch, with coffee in a drip, and trying to get my heavy head to focus on reading. But to be honest, I might end up just watching Netflix or napping 😴😴

This book certainly lives up to its reputation as one of those books that every historical fiction fan should read. It is a long, but excellent book that has a bit of everything in it, as well as detailing part of the Plantagenet family story - including Eleanor‘s imprisonment and the warring between Henry II and his sons. I look forward to reading the rest of William Marshall‘s story. A great start to the #MakeMeReadIt in August Challenge. #1

How exciting 😁 @Melissa_J @Cathythoughts @LeahBergen who would you cast as William?

LeahBergen What?? Yay! Hmm... I want them to cast someone who is big and manly and not too famous. A relative unknown would be best. 6y

The story of a knight, William Marshall, during the reign of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Marshall apparently was an ancestor of George Washington. Part of a series--somewhat in chronological order--that includes the story of the Magna Carta. Quite a page turner.

Chadwick is an English writer and I had to get her books via Canadian Amazon. A former romance novelist, she switched to historical fiction with a touch of romance. I enjoyed these stories so much that, well, I ordered them thru Canadian Amazon.
