Guys… Guys… I did it! The hardest thing about this review is how much was in it. It was about war times, the lives they left behind, a bit of PTSD, and the aftermath. It was about life and death. It was about choices that were made and wondering if it was the right one. It was a lot. Will I read it again? No, but I‘m glad I know what it was about now. 🥰

dabbe #yahooyou! Your review is pretty much what I said, too. Glad I read it--won't read it again! And probably one of the best novels about what it means to be human. Congrats! 🤩🤩🤩 11mo

Although I have the physical copy I‘ve decided this will be easier for me as an audiobook. I intend to listen to a couple of chapters a day or maybe more depending on how I like it

Reading Envy Podcast Episode 245: Looking Back at the Russian Novel

At the end of March, a handful of us gathered to discuss what we had read for the Russian novel quarter of Reading Envy Russia. We also discuss the works we abandoned, some dips into Ukrainian literature, and talked more about what makes a novel quintessentially Russian.

Suet624 Wow. I was so absorbed in the Tournament of Books that I missed out on all of these. Purchased The Possessed and never quite got around to it. Good intentions and all that... 3y
ReadingEnvy I'm still going to be reading more until the end of the year, because I did not get to nearly as much as I had hoped! 3y

I started my first few Serial Readers today. These are two #Chunksters that I want to read this year. I want to say Uncle Toms Cabin should be longer? No?

Allylu I loved Uncle Tom's Cabin. I listened to the audiobook. 3y
Daisey I listened to War and Peace last year and read Uncle Tom‘s cabin on Serial Reader. It took me a long time to get into Uncle Tom‘s Cabin, but the later part went faster. 3y

I finished and on time with #tolstoytogether! I learned I know very little about the Napoleonic Wars and should read up on them. I‘m proud I finished this and can now casually mention to people I‘ve actually read it, will I read it again?? Not anytime soon.

Well, prince, Genoa and Lucca are now nothing more than estates taken over by the Bonaparte family.

A little more drawn out then was necessary. Anna Karenina was more compact and definitely preferred over War & Peace. That being said, this is definitely a masterpiece and should be required reading. The second epilogue was repetitive. The point of free will vs the laws of nature could have been summed up in one chapter. 12 chapters was a little excessive to make this point. Much of the novel had many examples of excess indulgences throughout.

So I have one of those ‘100 books to read‘ scratch off posters. I‘d like to complete it, however, some of the books on it are books I always said I‘d never read as they‘re too long, seem too difficult or I‘ve just had no interest
The 3 I‘m most scared of are War and peace, Middlemarch and Ulysses
Should I try to read them or give up on finishing the poster? 🤔

Ruthiella Middlemarch is very readable! Give it a try! 😀 4y
slategreyskies Hmmmm... have you done the other 97 already? Just curious. Also, I think that, if you‘re not interested in reading those 3, then your disinterest should count as a space available to be scratched off. You read what you want to read, but you still get to enjoy the poster! It‘s a win/win. :) 4y
Cazxxx @Ruthiella thank you 😁 4y

Cazxxx @slategreyskies I haven‘t read all the others yet but a fair amount. Ohh that‘s a really good idea I might just do that 😊 4y
slategreyskies @Cazxxx when you‘ve finished the poster, you‘ll have to post a pic for us. I‘ll bet it‘s cool! :) 4y
Cazxxx @slategreyskies yes I absolutely will but it will be a while still 😄 4y
SamAnne I will give a thumbs up for War and Peace. Read this year. I got completely sucked into the story and just read 2-3 chapters a day (the chapters are short). I took 5 months so as to keep up with other reading. I now plan to read Anna Karina. 4y
Cazxxx @SamAnne i think I will give wat and peace a try and like you give myself a lot of time to read it. I have ak on hold at the library but as audiobook, im looking forward to it. Hope you enjoy! 4y
pr.alm One of my fav books! 4y

I‘m doing the read along with apublicspace.org and loving this classic. My Russian novel for the year was going to be Brothers Karamazov but I switched it up. Loving the sweeping story and cast of characters!

Oh dear. I‘ve been so good about using the library and not buying books but I went off the wagon today. My justifications? Well @catiewithac posted about the online long read of War and Peace so I got it to go from our local library. And then I felt compelled to buy other books I‘m on the list for at the library and sheesh, civilization could crash before those holds come in. And I‘m not buying cocktails out. Bad, bad!

SamAnne And I meant to tag The Cassandra! Local author Sharma Shields and I‘ve been meaning to read her latest. And gotta support our local artists, musicians and writers in these rough days! (edited) 5y
Scochrane26 I may end up buying a couple of books, too, just to support my local store. 5y
janeycanuck I‘ve been on a book-buying ban, too, but I‘m so worried my indie won‘t survive this that I spent a small fortune last week 5y

You know, I was anti-ereader until I had a baby. Because you can't nurse and hold a book, but you CAN nurse and hold an ereader. 👍
