Other Slavery: The Uncovered Story of Indian Enslavement in America
Other Slavery: The Uncovered Story of Indian Enslavement in America | Andres Resendez
16 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 94 to read
A landmark history the sweeping story of the enslavement of tens of thousands of Indians across America, from the time of the conquistadors up to the early 20th century Since the time of Columbus, Indian slavery was illegal in much of the American continent. Yet, as Andres Resendez illuminates in his myth-shattering "The Other Slavery," it was practiced for centuries as an open secret. There was no abolitionist movement to protect the tens of thousands of natives who were kidnapped and enslaved by the conquistadors, then forced to descend into the mouth of hell of eighteenth-century silver mines or, later, made to serve as domestics for Mormon settlers and rich Anglos. Resendez builds the incisive case that it was mass slavery, more than epidemics, that decimated Indian populations across North America. New evidence, including testimonies of courageous priests, rapacious merchants, Indian captives, and Anglo colonists, sheds light too on Indian enslavement of other Indians as what started as a European business passed into the hands of indigenous operators and spread like wildfire across vast tracts of the American Southwest."The Other Slavery" reveals nothing less than a key missing piece of American history. For over two centuries we have fought over, abolished, and tried to come to grips with African-American slavery. It is time for the West to confront an entirely separate, equally devastating enslavement we have long failed truly to see."

While we‘re all familiar with the enslavement of Africans in North America (and elsewhere), starting with the Spanish in the Caribbean, there was also enslavement of Indians in the Americas. This book looks at that enslavement into Mexico then the (future) southwestern US. Dense but incredibly readable, this is a great look at a lost piece of history.

Did you know the king of Spain tried to outlaw slavery in the Caribbean in the 1500s? And that various indigenous Americans enslaved each other? Lots going on here about how slavery affects more than just Africans in North America. Read as part of the 2016 NBA nonfiction longlist.

This has probably been the densest nonfiction I've read in years. But it was so interesting. You see and hear 'wild west' stories and all these movies but no one ever really talks about how it was. We have such a romanticized view. It's pretty shocking, and the sources and numbers are great. If it's interesting to you and you don't mind dense books, grab this one.

THE FINAL PERMIT FOR THE DAPL HAS BEEN DENIED! To all the water protectors, I send you all my gratitude and solidarity. You fought for what was yours and for once the government gave it to you. Finally something good in 2016

November really derailed my life (just wrote a post about THAT struggle at http://outlandishlit.blogspot.com)
At the suggestion of @theshrinkette & @alli.sos, I made a stack of nonfiction books to try to get me out of my slump. I've also got the audiobook of This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein on the way. Anybody have social justice/environmental nonfiction audiobook recs???

Really well-researched and documented story about indigenous slavery in the Americas. Starts with the Spanish in the Caribbean and proceeds through Mexico and the American West. It's academic but not hard to read. And the story will add to your knowledge of the settlement of the "new world." so much violence and heartbreak.

Reading more indigenous history this month. #noDAPL has got me wanting to know more.

WordWaller I put this on hold for the same reason! Happy to see a waiting list this time because it means people want to know more (: 8y
DrexEdit @WordWaller that is an excellent reason to have to wait for a book. I'm only a few pages in but already learning stuff! 8y

For #IndigenousPeoplesDay I am recommending books about indigenous issues. They don't get enough press, let alone respect in this country, even from the government. Native sovereignty is a big issue, one in discussion again with the DAPL, as are the government's atrocities against native tribes, from enslavement (yes they were slaves), to rape/sex & child trafficking, to displacement, & cultural appropriation. Unlearn what you were taught. 👇🏽✊🏽

BookishFeminist This book was written by one of my former law school professors. She's an incredible person and scholar on native sovereignty & tribal law & has committed a lot of her time trying to end sex abuses by non natives on tribal land (without able to prosecute them! yes, really), as well as rape, sex abuse & trafficking. She was a MacArthur Genius Fellow a few years ago for her work in this area & I highly recommend her book. 8y

Centique I've got a few of these in my TBR already - so fascinating to read about the First Nation from the other side of the world. Also important for me to read Maori and Pacific Island books/authors - my country's #indigenousbooks. 👍☺️Will make sure I review some on here too! 8y

Had to make a special request to the library to get the e-book and now I have it. I've been trying to get through "The Glass Palace" for a while now, I let it go once for Elena Ferrante. Do I forsake Palace again? (I'm a slow reader and not sure I can do 800 + pages of both books in 21 days.
