4.2⭐️ I wanted to resist because I was told that it was absolutely terrifying. Was it though… yes, but not because of the ghost/witch. It because of how awful the town people are and the reality that so many people who have same behavior outside of the story. The pace was slow and it has a-lot of complex characters, though it did not take away from the book. Overall, not what expected but definitely worth the read.

The scariest parts were the horrible townsfolk. The last few chapters are filled with some truly chilling violence. There were a lot of questions I had throughout and none of them are really answered in the end. Bit frustrated with how the story was told. The author originally wrote it in Dutch and then rewrote the ending when it was translated to English. I don‘t know if that impacted the story for me since I don‘t read Dutch. 🤷‍♀️

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Read for #RoaringWolfFrightNight book club on Fable. 5mo

4✨ This book was really tense. The descriptions use to detail the ghost witch are very detailed and disturbing. There is a lot of scary situations, but I think I was just expecting more chills. There was a point in the book that I was just sad, and the scary parts of the book were just not as scary because of the depression. #FableBR @Littlewolf1

LibrarianRyan I still have this one to try, but I recently tried to read Echo by the same author. And yeah, just sad and depression, Ughhh. I DNFed. 6mo

A very scary horror with a great central concept. I actually saw this on a tiktok recommendation and thought it looked way too scary then the concept worked its way into my head and I couldn‘t forget it so I had to actually read it lol. The ending was VERY intense (check tws) but I genuinely loved it. I really appreciate how this writer always does rewarding endings that feel thematically fitting without being predictable

In Black Spring there‘s a 17th century Witch that wanders the streets, enters your home & can stand next to your bed while you sleep. Oh, her eyes & mouth are sewn shut😱And you can never leave. and things start to go wrong for the citizens of the town.

Black Rock, a seemingly typical town in upstate NY, except for the presence of Katherine, a 17th century witch who cursed the town and haunts it to this day. The town does its best to keep their witch a secret to the outside world through an advanced security system and a collection of rules and regs all townies must follow. Over the course of a very slow build, things go terribly go terribly wrong!

I finished HEX early this a.m. Much of it reads like a parody…what would happen if a modern town were haunted by a witch? Well in the case of Black Rock, create a government and security system intended to suppress this info from slipping to the outside world and to allow locals to pretend that everything is fine. Be prepared for the witch to show up randomly at your family dinner or during those intimate moments with your spouse (mood killer 🤣).

JoeMo The book lulls the reader to sleep with life in Anytown, USA, if Anytown, USA were cursed by a witch. The book moves at a snail‘s pace until you reach the last third or fourth of the book when things increasingly descend into chaos…it‘s delightful, and tragic, and sobering in both what unfolds and the author‘s commentary on human nature. To boot, the audiobook has a perfect narration performance by Jeff Harding! This should be a mini-series! (edited) 2y

MoonWitch94 The ending is apparently different in the Dutch version! But the author won‘t say how. 2y
JoeMo @MoonWitch94 Yep, it‘s interesting. It was translated from Dutch to English by someone else. The author then updated the translation to switch it from a Dutch village to NY town and altered the ending. He stated this in the acknowledgments and told readers to “bribe a Dutch person” if they want to know the original ending…fortunately there‘s Reddit instead! 😂 He liked the new ending more, so he used it in the Dutch 2nd edition. 2y
MoonWitch94 Which ending did you like better? First Dutch Edition or English? 2y
JoeMo They‘re pretty similar, but the US version is more subtle, so it seems like the better ending between the two! 2y

A 300 year old witch with her eyes and mouth sewn shut walks the streets of Black Spring, NY. When local teens start to experiment with her tolerance levels, which is prohibited by the Emergency Decree, things start to go sideways. This slow burn was PHENOMINAL!! Even more interesting, it was rewritten to give it an American location, as it was originally written in Dutch and set in a small Dutch village.

DGRachel I heard the author also changed the ending for the English language version and didn‘t want the original Dutch translated. 😩 2y

Thomas Olde Heuvelt is a new auto-buy for me. Just when you think things will get resolved, something else thickens the plot. And then another spin, and then another, and then… I continued this pattern for 250 pages, through two meals, and then suddenly.. it was over.

Hex is the kind of gruesome accident you can‘t help but compulsively watch. It‘s the human race at its ugliest. It‘s squirmy and horrifying and spooky and I simply loved it.

The beginning of this book is very, very, very slow. Things do go utterly mad later, but it‘s a slow burn to get there. I know a lot of people enjoyed it, but it wasn‘t my thing and I found the characters completely unlikeable.

therubberduckninja Also - I was puzzled that a book originally published in Dutch was set in New York - and I discovered it originally wasn‘t. The author felt American readers wouldn‘t “get” the book and rewrote an Americanised version for the English translation… which personally, I find rather disappointing. 3y

This was my #doublespin for June. I've read this book in Dutch, the original language. It turned out to be a late night, I have had little sleep. It was a little creepy, especially with all the night sounds. I enjoyed the story and the ending. Some of the sentences and language used felt a bit weird. I think I might visit Beek sometime when I'm walking the Pieterpad trail in my country.

Tineke @BarbaraBB you did?! We're at stage seven Sleen-Coevorden. We tend to walk three stages in summer with a backpack and a tent on our back. Quite a heavy undertaking as we normally don't walk a lot. But we're always amazed at how fast our bodies recover and always feel proud we survived again. We should walk more often, otherwise it's going to take us 9 years to finish. 4y

Ja wij sliepen in hotels of b&b ‘s. Was een heerlijke beloning na zo‘n dag lopen! Een pad in Duitsland lijkt me te gek. Trekvogelpad is ook mooi maar je loopt lang tussen de snelwegen in, het is niet zo stil als op het Pieterpad 4y

It took me longer than expected to really start enjoying this one, but I'm glad I didn't bail.

This story of a town with a witch who wanders around and everyone tries to hide her from the outside world was such a cool concept. Although it was slow to build, and not quite as spooky as I expected, once the witch starts behaving erratically things really take off and I couldn't stop reading.

It is a creepy concept, although this tale was different than I‘d anticipated. I do like books that look at the horror of human nature but I don‘t think the execution worked completely for me. I‘m still confused about some things and with the slow pacing, my brain didn‘t always completely connect to the details. I also felt that the witch‘s history came in the form of a huge info dump.

October 4th: The Blair Witch Project

Hex is the English language adaptation of a Dutch horror novel by the same name & author. A witch terrorizes a town in Hudson Valley NY for hundreds of years until it finally reaches a point where the town goes on lockdown in an attempt to keep people safe. But the witch still haunts to woods, the streets and their homes. And she won‘t stop until she gets what she wants.

Well that was dark.
But it was also thrilling, scary and extremely difficult to put down.
A story that examines familial love, superstition and who we are as a species and how we treat each other when all hell breaks loose...kinda like now.
