The Good Thief
The Good Thief | Hannah Tinti
Richly imagined, gothically spooky, and replete with the ingenious storytelling ability of a born novelist, The Good Thief introduces one of the most appealing young heroes in contemporary fiction and ratifies Hannah Tinti as one of our most exciting new talents. Twelve year-old Ren is missing his left hand. How it was lost is a mystery that Ren has been trying to solve for his entire life, as well as who his parents are, and why he was abandoned as an infant at Saint Anthonys Orphanage for boys. He longs for a family to call his own and is terrified of the day he will be sent alone into the world. But then a young man named Benjamin Nab appears, claiming to be Rens long-lost brother, and his convincing tale of how Ren lost his hand and his parents persuades the monks at the orphanage to release the boy and to give Ren some hope. But is Benjamin really who he says he is? Journeying through a New England of whaling towns and meadowed farmlands, Ren is introduced to a vibrant world of hardscrabble adventure filled with outrageous scam artists, grave robbers, and petty thieves. If he stays, Ren becomes one of them. If he goes, hes lost once again. As Ren begins to find clues to his hidden parentage he comes to suspect that Benjamin not only holds the key to his future, but to his past as well. From the Hardcover edition.

After reading The 12 Lives of Samuel Hawley, I wanted to read Tinti‘s debut novel (I think). This is the story of Ren, a one handed orphan raised by the strict brothers. Benjamin claims to be Ren‘s long lost brother and rescues him from the orphanage but, what is the life he‘s involved in now? Benjamin and his friend Tom are not exactly upstanding citizens. Danger lurks everywhere, but so does love and kindness. Unpredictable!

Okay book. The writing's good but the plot felt a little forced, it felt like it was tied up a little too neatly. The pacing was a bit off, the story moves a bit slow at the beginning, and is kinda rushed at the end, which could also be a consequence of trying to make everything fit where it should in the end.

Started the tagged book last night. Did some holiday no-bake snack making today before going to a drive-thru holiday light display at Gillette Stadium. This “reindeer chow” looks a fright! I hope it tastes okay. I put some gold cupcake glitter on top because how else could it be magical enough to help reindeer fly? Also have new winter pajamas for the girls to wear in the car. PJs, snacks, holiday lights, who wouldn‘t like it? 🎄

Bookzombie I bet it will be delicious and this is going be a great Christmas memory. 💗🎄 4y

Between a pick and so-so for me. It had an interesting idea and intriguing characters but the actual story felt a bit all over the place. Ren is a one handed boy rescued from an orphanage by Benjamin Nab who takes him on “adventures” in New England. Ultimately I stayed because I wanted to find out what happened to Ren and whether or not he found the answers he was looking for - otherwise, the plot felt disjointed and rushed in some places.

That‘s a wrap for me folks. Finished three books, started an audio book (My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me) and started my next physical book (tagged). Would have liked a slightly better time over all but not too shabby. #24b4Monday #teamslaughter

3.5 stars

I really, really love historical fiction novels and The Good Thief had such a promising premise; grave robber and con artist takes a boy under his wing in 1800s America. While the book featured interesting characters the plot wasn‘t fleshed out very well and it often felt like certain plot points were randomly thrown in. The cast also became too large and not enough time was spent with the characters to really establish their stories.

Easy to read, well written lovely story. I liked more the first chapters because it was a pleasure to read about the characters. The characterization is always the most difficult part to get right and I think Hannah Tinti got it right

Started this one. I have heard so much of the new book by her that I wanted to buy immediately but then I thought I should also try her first. There is always a reason for order .... even in chaos.

Meh. My favorite part of the book is its conclusion, which is equal parts triumphant and aching. Characters didn't feel very fleshed out, in my humble opinion, and many action scenes were bewildering blurs of events. First read through, this one wasn't my cup of tea; but that's not to say I hated it. ⭐️⭐️.5

#TBRtemptation post! I like this cover. This #YA historical fiction novel centers around 12-year-old Ren. Ren has a missing left hand. He wants to know why, and who is parents are. While at Saint Anthony's Orphange, Benjamin Nab shows up, claiming to be Ren's brother. Ren is released to Ben's care, & they travel through a hardscrabble New England filled with robbers & scam artists. Does Ben have true answers for Ren? #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

SusanInTiburon Oh, that was a good read! 8y
Lindy This isn't usually considered YA; it won an Alex award (for adult books that appeal to teens). I'm looking forward to Tinti's new novel in March: 8y

4.5 hours into reading I'm finally getting to one of my planned books. Of course, Shaun is doing his absolute best at tempting me to nap instead. But at least he cooperates as a book stand! #24in48 #catsofLitsy

Gritty, sad, and beautiful. Tinti brings the stench of the docks and the graveyard to life while breaking your heart getting to know a boy without a hand, a grifter, a drunk, and an assassin.
