This graphic novel had me in tears! Such a beautiful and poignant story about a girl struggling with her big brother‘s addiction issues. Told in dual timelines, this story also weaves in the history of the DC and Marvel comics and how those characters inspired young people for the first time.
Kiddo wasn‘t a fan, but I found it pretty good. Probably what didn‘t appeal to her is what I liked: it starts slowly, and it feels a little like something‘s missing until the secrets start to come out. I loved how Sunny found herself through comic books and a new friend. The cats were great and I liked Big Al. I‘ll get around to the others at some point. #52Books23 #alliterativetitle
Sunny goes to visit her grandfather in Florida while her parents deal with her older brother‘s substance abuse problem at home. This would be really helpful for kids dealing with a similar issue.
⭐ ⭐ ⭐4 ⭐
This was such a fun surprise. I figured it would be a fun breezy book based on the cover, but I never expected it to take place in the 70s or be as deep as it was. Sunny has been pushed off to her grandpa‘s Florida retirement village for the summer. It shows that life has its difficulties, they are not your fault, and that you can get through them. It was a wonderful book and I am glad there is a sequel.

@cwarnier what a great pick. Loved it. I still have to read book 2 but it will go out in the mail probably Thursday (the next day I have to leave the house)
Hey all, this box came in crushed smashed and open. The slip case of the books was damaged. I can tape it up like it was new but wanted to ask first. @cwarnier @IndoorDame @Shakespearience
Sunny side up is a really fast and funny book. It takes place in Florida, but this girl named sunny she went to Florida to go see your grandpa and she met this boy and they become best friends
Apologies #LMPBC groups. I am a little late in mailing out the books for #GroupL and #GroupB but I should be able to send them this weekend!
I am a little confused on which #GroupB graphic novel gets mailed — 5 Worlds or Sunny? I haven‘t been able to finish 5 Worlds yet. So I hope it is Sunny 😅
#BookSpinBingo update! I have read 7 books in January so far and yet somehow they are all concentrated at the top corner of my sheet 😅
I finally got around to reading my #LMPBC #GroupB graphic novels though — the tagged book and its sequel. So that means I finally read my #Bookspin
It was a good story and the art reminded me of comic strips from that section of the newspaper that I read as a kid. Solid story in both volumes!
Read these for #lmpbc mg graphic novel group. I really liked them. They used a soft watercolor style inking & the color palate shifted throughout to reflect the mood, which was subtle but effective. There are 2 more people waiting to read them so I won‘t give any spoilers. Thank you for including the sequel Christina! That was an awesome surprise. #bookspinbingo #crushtherush #readyourway #wintergames2029 #readnosedreindeer #wintersolstice
I heard great things about this book (and it's sequal). When I started reading it, I was surprised that it was set in the 1970's. How many 10 year old's are going to get all of the 70's references? For being a “kids“ book, I felt like there was content that I may not want my child to read.Exposure to drugs, smoking and drinking all of which are perfectly normal in the 70's.I started Swing It Sunny and will mail off both books when I am done.

Here is what I have all of us reading. Happy reading this round.
My first #libraryhaul since quarantine started. I‘m so excited!! The town‘s contactless pickup system seems to be working well, so I think I can go back to reading without bankrupting myself 🤣. This first library stack is a return to my Nancy Drew reread, from last year, and a youth graphic novel binge of titles we decided not to use for #lmpbc that I‘ve been wanting to read.
My only gripe with this is the cover, which doesn‘t fit the tone of the book - it‘s much heavier.
1976. Sunny is sent to stay with her grandfather, in his Florida retirement village, for the summer holidays. We see her bored, settling in, making a friend, and discovering comic books. We also slowly learn of the trouble at home that‘s led to her being sent out of harm‘s way for the summer.
Sunny Side Up is a graphic novel about Sunny who is spending the summer with her grandfather in Florida while her family struggles to deal with her older brother's substance abuse.
I swear my daughter has read through all of the graphic novels in the library. Can anyone recommend any more like this one?
So freaking cute. I wasn't expecting the heavy parts. I thought it was going to be all summer mischief and fun. Still really good though. #24B4Monday
This was a cute story. A girl goes to Florida for the summer and stays with her grandfather. At first, everything is boring, but she finds a friend who opens her world up to comics. Great for any age to read. Deals with abuse, drugs, lying and how to treat people. Illustrations were wonderful as well. Happy ending.
I give it 3 stars.

I recently added this sunny title to my tbr pile. I read my first Holm title not to long ago and I enjoyed her style.
Loving this cute little graphic novel! Reading about Florida while living in Florida is pretty amusing. I love recognizing all the places!

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Such a great graphic novel. Perfect for the start of summer. 10 yr old Sunny finds herself packed off to her grandpas Florida retirement home. check out my post @ www.bibliographyofasuburbanmom.com for more
Very sweet and explains drug/alcohol abuse in a soft way. Love, love the inclusion of the comics and Sunny's friendship with Buzz.
I kept seeing this one leave the shelves so I had to see what it was about. A very cute story about dealing with guilt and keeping secrets and finding friends. 4 ☀️☀️☀️☀️ sunshines for Sunny.
Make the most of what you've got. Live on the sunny side of life. 😊
Perfect book to hand to anyone who says graphic novels are fluffy silly super hero stories with no substance. Ten-year-old Sunny spends a summer with grandpa in FL because her parents are trying to help her older brother with his substance abuse problem. In flashbacks we see Sunny keeping her brother‘s secret. Has Sunny learned to speak up? That some secrets should not be kept? Great book for upper elementary and middle school kiddos.
Sunshine Lewin was visiting her grandpa in a retirement community. Since it was in Florida, the land of Disney World, she thought it would be fun. But her grandpa lives with a bunch of old people, so it doesn‘t turn out that fun. Luckily Sunny makes a friend, and his name is Buzz whom likes comic books. The question really is, why is Sunny here in the first place?
This great middle grade graphic novel touches on what it's like for a kid dealing with a loved one's substance abuse problem. Anyone who grew up in the late 70's & 80's will find panels to relate to. I had to screen shot the macrame Barbie toilet paper holder because as a kid it was my most ardent desire to have one. 😂 #MG #kidlit #graphicnovel
And with this, I have completed my @bookriot #ReadHarder17 challenge!
This was great! The 70s were a smidge before my time but close enough that I enjoyed the nostalgia factor. The scenes with the older brother drinking and on drugs felt a little like an after school special, but I liked the rest of the way the story was handled. Now I need to get my hands on book 2!
The only problem with choosing #coversinyrfavecolor is that I have three different favorite colors. #AndItsAugust @RealLifeReading
Such a sweet read! It tackles a tough topic, but I loved this story about Sunny, her grandpa, and secrets.
At first I thought it was just going to be a cute story but in the end it was not that she was having a tough family life but it still had a good ending.
Great quick read. A punch to the heart. Definitely blinked back a few stray tears at the end. This panel is one after Sunny diffuses a family argument with some facts about Pompeii. Once the tension is forgotten, she imagines the now happier moment preserved in volcanic ash. Five stars!!!
Loving this creatively cool panel depicting what it feels like when an older sibling's reputation precedes you in school.
A graphic novel stunner about a girl sent to her grandfather's Florida retirement community while her family deals with some issues in Pennsylvania. Sunny reflects thoughtfully on the incidents that led to her exit and also finds the power of comic books to help her work through the situation.
I really enjoyed this book. They had their fun times, and their bad times. If you like comic books by Raina Telegemier you will love this book.

A cute middle grade graphic novel that addresses addiction in a very simplistic yet realistic way. Plus, this story incorporates a love of comics. A fun, quick read that focuses on some serious family issues.
A look at addiction from a child's POV that is both lighthearted and serious. Full review:http://mrskaoreads.com/book/sunny-side-up/
After hearing so much about this book, I finally got my hands on a copy. I really liked it & definitely think many youngsters will be able to relate to Sunny. I especially appreciated the authors' note at the end, reaching out to kids in similar situations. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Read this in one sitting. Really loved how the story pulls you in and makes you uncomfortably involved with the family's problem.
