The Devil in the Marshalsea | Antonia Hodgson
41 posts | 19 read | 30 to read
The first thrilling historical crime novel starring Thomas Hawkins, a rakish scoundel with a heart of gold, set in the darkest debtors prison in Georgian London, where people fall dead as quickly as they fall in love and no one is as they seem. London, 1727. Tom Hawkins refuses to follow in his fathers footsteps and become a country parson. His preference is for wine, women, and cards. But theres honor there too, and Tom wont pull family strings to get himself out of debtnot even when faced with Londons notorious debtors prison. The Marshalsea Gaol is a world of its own, with simple rules: Those with family or friends who can lend them a little money may survive in relative comfort. Those with none will starve in squalor and disease. And those who try to escape will suffer a gruesome fate at the hands of its ruthless governor and his cronies. The trouble is, Tom has never been good at following rules, even simple ones. And the recent grisly murder of a debtor, Captain Roberts, has brought further terror to the gaol. While the captain's beautiful widow cries for justice, the finger of suspicion points only one way: do the sly, enigmatic figure of Samuel Fleet. Some call Fleet a devil, a man to avoid at all costs. But Tom Hawkins is sharing his cell. Soon Toms choice is clear: get to the truth of the murderor be the next to die. A dazzling evocation of a startlingly modern era, The Devil in the Marshalsea is a thrilling debut novel full of intrigue and suspense.

#Ihavequestions @RaeLovesToRead

#1 Tagged - not my favourite in the series (that's The Silver Collar), but you need to start with this one!

#2 Gothic LGBTQIA fantasy - this might exist??

#3 Romantic horror

RaeLovesToRead 2 sounds amazing! And I would rather read Romance Horror than Romance or Horror... 😅 2y

Mehso-so

Pretty good yarn, suffers in a few places from predictable twists and over simplification on socio-economics. But ultimately worth your time and written with skill and care.

Not far off being a 'Pick' for me, and I think more people will like it than not.

Congrats Helen & I love the 🐿 picture!

1. You're getting 2 from me:
Fiction - The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers because I loved the LGBTQ relationship & the diversity of characters.
Nonfiction - Crime's Strangest Cases by Peter Seddon because it made me laugh out loud & one of the cases reminded me of my favourite tv show! 😂

2. The Silver Collar by Antonia Hodgson - the next in my favourite historical mystery series - ⬇️

jenniferw88 I've tagged the first book in case you haven't read any of them. @squirrelbrain 4y
jenniferw88 Forgot the hashtag (or octothorpe as I've just learnt from Millionaire 😂) #nutsaboutbooks 4y
squirrelbrain Ooh octothorpe - that‘s a new one! I think I‘ve read one Hodgson - Death at Fountains Abbey and really like it. I shall add your tagged one to my TBR. Thanks for playing! 4y

jenniferw88 @squirrelbrain 😊 If you have read Death at Fountains Abbey, that's #3! How are you feeling? Any news yet? Book 2 is 4y
squirrelbrain Ah, I didn‘t realise that! There were a few bits that I didn‘t ‘get‘ - that would be why! I read it because Fountains Abbey is only a few miles away. Not feeling too bad, it‘s grumbling a bit but nothing like it was! Had my MRI on Sun but the consultant is away until next Weds so I won‘t know anything until then. Thanks for asking! 😘 4y
jenniferw88 @squirrelbrain it's great when you find a book relatively close to you isn't it? It happened to me with The Breaker by Minette Walters earlier this year. I picked up the first Hodgson because of my MA & have attended a talk with Antonia & got the first 2 books signed! 😘 4y

Congratulations @Lizpixie and thanks for the giveaway! #lizpixies3x3giveaway

It's so hard choosing faves but here are mine:
#historicalmystery - tagged book, I love anything in the 18th Century!
#fantasy - this got me reading on my own as book 3 scared me; have tagged my fave of the series - Bellatrix ❤
#crimethriller - was torn between this 1 & John Connolly, but chose this as although John told me I liked the genre I discovered Harry first.

@ljuliel #history

I love both historical fiction and non-fiction but this series came to mind first. It's set in the 18th Century, the period my MA is in, and is my favourite era to read about.

I did find it a bit slow to start with and it did take me awhile to get into the book to the point where I cant put the book down. The main plot of the story is to find out who the murderer truly is, there are plenty of suspects in the Marshalsea, and your mind when you are reading it will pretty much accuse everyone of it and find reasons to suspect them all and make you think you have worked it all out.

Great pick @jenniferw88 for #whodunituk !
I very rarely select any historical fiction for myself so this was a something I might not have read had it not been for the book swap. And I really enjoyed it!
A murder mystery set in Marshalsea prison, the plot twists and turns and keeps on going right until the end. I‘ve added the sequel to my TBR, looking forward to seeing what escapades Tom gets up to next! X

The Devil in the Marshalsea by Antonia Hodgson. This is set in 1727; Tom Hawkins has been thrown into Marshalsea Gaol, a notorious debtor's prison, and ends up sharing a room with Samuel Fleet--who is generally considered to have murdered his former roommate. I figured out some of the mystery plot, but it was complicated enough that I didn't quite manage to line up the pieces correctly. Originally posted on Instagram.

I absolutely loved this! If you fancy journeying back to the famous debtors prison in London 1727, pick this up. It's a grimy story, full of corruption and I couldn't get through it fast enough. Also, it's only 99p on kindle in the UK today which is a total bargain.
