LOST 1972. A plane has crashed in the Andes mountains. The passengers are hopelessly lost in one of the most isolated places on earth. ABANDONED Almost three months later, two of the survivors, emaciated and frozen, reach the authorities and lead a rescue team to the remaining fourteen passengers. ALIVE The rescue team are shocked when they reach the crash-site. Food supplies have long gone, and the remains of the dead lie scattered among the fuselage. I bet it‘s been 25 years since I saw the movie adaption of this book starring Ethan Hawke. I remember it as a thriller against the winter elements of the Andes. The matter-of-fact culinary options described in the book seriously made my body twist and had me eewww-ing aloud all by my isolation self. Yikes. This book remains a great read.

Catherine_Willoughby I remember the movie 🤢 5y
marleed @Catherine_Willoughby Now I want to watch it again because I think the emphasis of the movie differs from the book. 5y
Litsi Oh wow! I haven‘t thought of this book for decades! 5y

marleed @Litsi In 2019 my primary goal was new books and new authors. This year I‘m trying to prioritize my older books. It‘s an absolute delight to fall into a book published a decade or more before and realize the joy in a book that stands the test of time. 5y
marleed @Litsi It‘s such a delight when I step into a book published more than a decade ago and realize publishing date need not be my priority. 5y
Litsi For sure. I am a classics reader so dates never daunt me. But I have been very surprised by the relevancy of 197Os books. Check out The War Between the Tates. I review it on my page. (edited) 5y

I read this in my tenth grade English class it‘s about a group of rugby players that want to go to Chile but their plane crashes in the Andes. In the beginning I didn‘t really enjoy this book at all,but when we found out more about the characters and there real life experiences I started to really enjoy it.I thought this book was really interesting, and emotional I loved it when they finally reunited with their families again totally recommend!!

It was 1972 when a plane full of Uruguayan rugby players crashed deep in the Andes. Shockingly, the majority of the occupants lived over 10 weeks in frigid temperatures. Food ran out long before they were rescued, so they were forced to resort to cannibalizing their dead companions.

#babyitscoldoutside #winterwonderland

TrishB Not read the book, have seen the film though! 6y
Cinfhen I liked this one, I know you were iffy about it. Good pick!! I‘m still shocked how they were able to survive 🥶🥶 6y

Let‘s be honest. The true story of the plane carrying a Uraguayan rugby team that crashed into the Andes in 1973 continues to intrigue. The young men were stranded over 10 weeks. While most died, the survivors were forced to resort to anthropophagy in order to remain alive. The movie deals with the cannibalism of these young men in a very sanitized fashion whereas the book is far more graphic but respectful. Who would not break a taboo to live?

A fascinating and well written account of the 1972 plane crash in the Andes mountains and what the survivors endured for 10 weeks and the unimaginable things they had to do in order to survive. Most of all, I was astounded by their strong desire, determination, and faith to stay alive and find help. Highly recommend!

This is a tentative pick for me. Certainly a compelling story, the survivors of a plane crash in the Andes mountains struggle to survive for 72 days in brutal weather conditions. The only food onboard is chocolate and wine, so they must resorting to eating their dead companions. My biggest issue with the book is I found it impossible to keep everyone straight. A list in the beginning would be 👍🏻👍🏻. #booked2018 #setoutdoors

GripLitGrl This was one hell of a true story 7y
emilyhaldi Some similarities to my post for today‘s prompt too... 😬 7y
Cinfhen I agree! The names were confusing which is the issue I had with the Chilean Mine disaster, and a list of names would have been very helpful. It‘s still a powerful story and certain one of resilience 7y

This is on my TBR thanks to @Cinfhen . I decided to use it for the #booked2018 prompt for a book set outdoors and I can‘t wait to read it! There are 45 people aboard a plane in 1972 when it crashes in the Andes. Most of those 45 people are #doomed.
