Lark Rise to Candleford
Lark Rise to Candleford | Flora Thompson, H. J. Massingham
8 posts | 7 read | 20 to read
The story of three closely-related Oxfordshire communities -- a hamlet, a village, and a town -- and the memorable cast of characters who people them. Based on Thompson's own experiences as a child and young woman, it is keenly observed and beautifully narrated, quiet and evocative.

One of my BOTMs from my brilliant partner! 🥰 Even had a lovely little note written on the front page saying 'to be read with tea + muffins..' 😍 Unfortunately i didn't have breakfast muffins but a chocolate muffin with a tea will do 🥰❤️

MrT Wow. Thats a blast from my past. Read this as a teenager for my English Literature O level back in the 1980s. Remember liking it even though some parts of it were quite trivial and boring. 4y

What a lovely story. Through the trials of 2020, this book, along with the BBC TV adaption of it, simultaneously let my mind escape to another time and place and kept me grounded. I've never read anything like it- a sturdy but delicately carved social history of rural England in the final decades of the nineteenth century with a lacquer of fiction applied to it. ... (continued at https://www.librarything.com/work/14570/reviews/86975755).

bibliothecarivs @Milara I have not read or watched Cranford yet, but the similarity was mentioned in Richard Maybe's introduction to the edition I read (he favoured LRtC because its author was actually from the social world she described) and at one point in the book Laura, the main character, reads Cranford. 4y

Mehso-so

This one isn't in the database. A 100 page illustrated non-fiction book about the life in and around Lark Rise Country, recommended only for fans. It's not bad, but there are lots of pages of charts about current parish attendees and things like that, and I was hoping for a little more non-fiction about what the countryside was like during Flora's life. Still interesting, and a nice reference. Plus, real-life Zillah photos! 👍🏼

LauraBrook Forgot to add this is book 3 for #litsypartyofone! 8y

Lark Rise, take me away! Even with avoiding all tv and non-bookish internets, friends are still texting me. Ack, what is going on in this world?!?

LeahBergen Oh, Lark Rise! I've watched the show and found the book at a charity sale. Have you read it? I haven't got to it yet but it looks just as soothing (😉) as the series. 8y
LauraBrook @LeahBergen Haven't read the book yet either, but my mom remembers the book being similar in tone to the show, so if nothing else, it'll be a good read. Soothing is for sure what is needed today. 8y
