The Small Hand | Susan Hill
17 posts | 25 read | 17 to read
Late one summer evening, antiquarian bookseller Adam Snow is returning from a client visit when he takes a wrong turn. He stumbles across a derelict Edwardian house, and compelled by curiosity, approaches the door. Standing before the entrance, he feels the unmistakable sensation of a small cold hand creeping into his own, 'as if a child had taken hold of it'. At first he is merely puzzled by the odd incident but then begins to suffer attacks of fear and panic, and is visited by nightmares. He is determined to learn more 'about the house and its once-magnificent, now overgrown garden but when he does so, he receives further, increasingly sinister, visits from the small hand.

This story of a rare-book dealer haunted by the manifestation of a child's hand gripping his own started well, developed with sufficient interplay between the mundane and ghostly to make it creepily atmospheric, and Hill's descriptions of locale all added to the building tension which the ending, unfortunately, didn't quite pay off for me. Still a low pick, and if you like the classic ghost stories of E. F. Benson and M. R. James, then you'll 👇

Bookwomble ... probably like this, too. 👻 2y

After picking up this one, I discovered Hill is a friend of Michael Gove 🤮, who defended her 2017 article in the right wing Spectator magazine, where she announced her boycott of an independent bookshop for not (in her opinion) stocking enough pro Donald Trump books 🤨
Can I separate art from artist? Will her (in my opinion) odious beliefs & associations taint the reading experience? I read a short story collection of hers that I enjoyed, so🤞🏻

TrishB Wow 😮 that‘s some stuff to overcome! 2y
Bookwomble @TrishB And that's not mentioning her support for JKR's transphobia 🙄 I'll reserve judgement on the book itself though, as I did actually enjoy some of her short stories (mind you, the 47% Litsy rating for this one isn't encouraging). 2y
TrishB I shall look forward to your entirely non judgemental review! You‘re a better person than me. 2y

Bookwomble @TrishB Well, I'll try to keep it objective 😁 Not always easy, as evidenced by my comments on the tagged book! 2y
TrishB Rich people‘s problems is my least favourite genre. 2y
Bookwomble @TrishB Indeed! (Unless dragons are involved 🐉😆) Von Arnim's wealth came in part from her husband's use of Polish slaves, and her attitude towards her servants was too redolent of that for me to stomach beyond page 30. 2y
batsy Oh god! I have one of her books on my shelves and I wish I'd read it before I learned about her political leanings 2y
batsy (Because now I'm just gonna side-eye the book whenever I walk past it.) 2y
Bookwomble @batsy 😒 I know what you mean! In fairness, when not knowing her leanings I enjoyed another book of hers, and now knowing them, so far the current book is also very enjoyable. I haven't heard anything egregiously bad about her, so I'm happy to give a good writer's work its due 🙂 I've also got TWIB on tbr, and I'm not put off it (so far! 😏) 2y
The_Book_Ninja So, she tried to “cancel” a bookseller. The kind of thing rancid right-wingers say everyone but them do? I‘ll be swerving her for that reason alone. 2y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja You might find this Guardian article about the incident revealing. It doesn't show her in a good light! I'm glad I got the book I'm reading off a charity table so I haven't put any money in her pocket 😏 https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/feb/28/authors-angry-after-susan-hill-acc... 2y
The_Book_Ninja Thank you. I shall read it this morning!🙌🏼 2y

You can guarantee two things when you pick up a Susan Hill book - 1) it will be well written and 2) it will be creepy. This is a good old fashioned ghost story, it‘s easy to read and like most books in the supernatural / horror genre, I devoured it. I wouldn‘t say it‘s my favourite Susan Hill novel but I liked it and it‘s gorgeous cover art enough to keep it in my collection.

Less is more perfectly captures Susan Hill's style... Definitely reading more books written by her. #readingWomen

Her writing is so alluring that I read it right away. This makes a great choice for #Booked2018 #spooky read but I know I will read other such titles later in the year.

Meanwhile, returning the unread #librarybooks which will be KIV for the various upcoming prompts.

I rarely post foodie pics but this is too special... Just bade farewell to my favorite café.

Many happy memories, reading moments, sipping that cuppa of instant bliss.
Now I no longer have that special place to go...

BookishMe @C.Perone trying not to be sad as the management seem to have plans in different direction... Can only be grateful for them and wish them the Very best 7y
TheBookgeekFrau In that case🙂 and I hope you find another comfy place🤞 7y

Zelma That is very sad. In a similar vein, the pizza place in my town closed this week. It doesn‘t seem like a big deal but we live in a small town, it was our favorite food splurge and now have nothing but Sonic if we don‘t want to cook. 7y
BookishMe @Zelma oh dear... Yes, it can be tough in a small town with limited choices 7y
BookishMe @C.Perone thanks... It'll be tough. The uniquely rustic ambience of this place has been my cosy spot. At other places, coffee may be good but not the environment, or vice versa. We are spoilt lot here - 😂 😂 7y
GatheringBooks which coffee shop is this???? 7y
BookishMe @GatheringBooks Artistry Café. Not sure if I mentioned it in the email. Last day tomorrow and they close before 3pm ;(( 7y

Incidentally the Susan Hill book I decided to borrow also has blue cover! Haha...

This may be added to the spooky read for #Booked2018 although I already had another title in mind ;D

I picked up a copy of Susan Hill's The Small Hand in a hotel bar in Krakow last week and was gripped enough to download it to finish it in the plane home. A good, solid ghost story, with just enough tradition and just enough originality. I found its ending really quite unsettling.

An interesting enough story but the style of writing was not for me.
