'A twisting, darkly comic, thrill-a-minute ride across Europe. If you loved Killing Eve, you'll devour Conviction' Erin Kelly 'Denise Mina brilliantly manages to be funny, heart-wrenching, gut-punching and addictive all at once: a fabulous, captivating novel' Nicci French From 'the woman who may be Britains finest living crime novelist' (Daily Telegraph), Conviction stars a strong female protagonist who is obsessed by true-crime podcasts and decides, one day, to investigate one of the unsolved crimes herself. Its just a normal morning for Anna McDonald. Gym kits, packed lunches, getting everyone up and ready. Until she opens the front door to her best friend, Estelle. Anna turns to see her own husband at the top of the stairs, suitcase in hand. Theyre leaving together and theyre taking Annas two daughters with them. Left alone in the big, dark house, Anna cant think, she cant take it in. With her safe, predictable world shattered, she distracts herself with a story: a true-crime podcast. Theres a sunken yacht in the Mediterranean, multiple murders and a hint of power and corruption. Then Anna realises she knew one of the victims in another life. She is convinced she knows what happened. Her past, so carefully hidden until now, will no longer stay silent. This is a murder she cant ignore, and she throws herself into investigating the case. But little does she know, her past and present lives are about to collide, sending everything she has worked so hard to achieve into freefall. Conviction is the compelling and unique new thriller from multiple award-winner and author of THE LONG DROP, Denise Mina. 'Such a delight: playful, fast-paced, and entirely compulsive' Ann Cleeves 'A dark star of a novel, blazingly intense, up-to-the-minute fresh, and exciting as all hell' A. J. Anna McDonald,a “trophy wife”is married with two young daughters. She is a fan of true crime podcasts. One morning,a knock at the door turns her life upside down. True crime and podcasts define her new chapter. So much going on that at times,I was a bit confused.A reviewer called it “madcap”and that helped me settle in to it.There are gangsters, the rich and famous,an anorexic has been rockstar, footballers,a yacht explosion, and more! Fast paced!

I think this is a pun 🤔
Anna is in hiding as a suburban housewife, and all in one day finds out her husband is leaving her, her whereabouts are outed, and that she may actually have information related to a cold case on her latest true crime podcast. So she goes on the run to investigate with a rock star.
Get it? She has convictions about a conviction?
You‘re welcome, #littensdressedinblood

This book was very “eh”. Parts of it were really interesting but other parts were boring and random. And the ending came out of nowhere. But it was kinda fun and did make me feel a real emotion occasionally.

⭐️⭐️ Oops, I forgot to review this one. I‘ve already brain dumped most of it so that should tell you something. The writing itself, and the audio narration, are both quite good, but the story is a big ol‘ mess. Way too much going on and I cared about exactly none of it.

MicheleinPhilly YES! I hated this book oh so much! 4y
MsMelissa I haven‘t seen a lot of overly positive reviews for this one. I own it, but am definitely not in a rush to read it now. 4y
britt_brooke @Book_Fiend_Melissa Mina just tried to do too much, I think. I liked the writing, but could not understand the point of the story. It was all over the place and not very believable. 4y
britt_brooke @MicheleinPhilly The description sounded intriguing, but it‘s a disaster. 4y

I came within one prompt of finishing #booked2019, so I‘m staying on trend with #booked2020, and I‘m just not going to do the tartan noir. Not feeling it. But thank you for being wonderful hosts @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft 💜💜💜

I‘m still trying to decide how I want to challenge myself intellectually next year, given that I stay home a lot. I think it‘s going to be math, but we‘ll see!

marleed I see that I read this so I read the book‘s synopsis- I still don‘t recall reading it. So I scrolled all the way down the feed for this book to read my comments. Oh yeah, I remember my comment - but it didn‘t really bring back the full story for me. Here‘s another reminder to slow down my 2021 reading and absorb a book for a day or so before starting the next one! Bugs the crap out of me to forget a book so completely! 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen lol! Guess I am!! Thanks! 🥰😘 4y
Megabooks @marleed I definitely don‘t remember every book I‘ve read well. I think it‘s always been that way but may be affected by reading speed. I know or got worse (as far as remembering) after my last bout of severe depression. I definitely remember the good ones though!! 👍🏻👍🏻 4y
marleed Ha - that‘s it - I blame the book - lol. It was simply not good enough to recall 12 months later! 4y
marleed Also, I‘m truly sorry about your depression. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way how real and serious it is. My husband was the go-to guy that we put on a two-legged pedestal. Behind the scenes he suffered from a depression that I simply did not have the resources to understand. His death was a suicide. I only wish I understood then what I know now. 4y
BarbaraBB Math sounds suitable especially since I know now that you‘ll do maths anyway while reading! So fascinating. If you‘re really interested in doing and reading maths, my little Christmas gift will be exactly what you need 🤞🏽😘 4y
BarbaraBB And I have some great other (fiction) books about math to recommend too if you like! 4y
Megabooks @marleed I am so sorry about your husband. My closest friend from childhood lost her husband to suicide 2 years ago. It sounds very similar to what happened to you. Around the same time, I was suicidal and undergoing ECT. It was extremely difficult, and I do the best I can to guard my mental health now, but depression is a sneaky f**ker. 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB awww!! Thank you for sending something!! That means so much! I am excited to go on this new journey and will be happy to see this surprise. 😀💜 I‘m sorry to say I haven‘t sent Christmas presents or cards this year. ☹️ it‘s just been too difficult. But know that I am so glad to have you in my life!! 😘 4y
BarbaraBB Don‘t feel sorry! I don‘t send them either just to a few dear people. I hope it‘ll reach you in time, I sent it a week ago but the mail is a mess it seems. 💗💗 4y
alisiakae @marleed I read Conviction this year and only remember bits and pieces of it too. @Megabooks I am all for counting a bail as still completing the category this year, so I‘m just going to go ahead and say Congrats 🎉🥳 and well done! 🙌🏽🙌🏽 (edited) 4y
MicheleinPhilly You were wise to bail. I HATED this book. 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB unfortunately it is!! I‘ll keep my fingers crossed that it gets here in time, and if not, then I‘ll enjoy it when it does get here!! 💙💙 4y
Megabooks @4thhouseontheleft thanks very much!! 🎉 it does not seem this book is very good! 4y
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly thank goodness I didn‘t waste anymore time! 4y

Listening to a podcast and you know someone in one? This happens to Anna and her whole world explodes in one day. Fast read. Loved how the author took a scary scenario in any person‘s past and described it in a way that makes you think but doesn‘t use graphics to replay a terrible happening. Maybe she couldn‘t have really solved a mystery this fast but it still is written in a perfect believable way.

I wanted to like this one and thought I would because of the podcast element in the plot, but it just didn‘t work for me. I didn‘t like the main character, the mix of stream of conscious and action didn‘t flow, and it was too far fetched with a buildup that didn‘t pay off in the end. Pass on this one.

I loved the premise - listening to a True Crime podcast Anna recognises the characters involved & it brings her traumatic past, which she'd been running/ hiding from for the past decade, back in to focus. Some very insightful and poignant sentences around violent against women, trauma, memory and being a survivor. I didn't though love the plot - at times if felt like I was inside an outtake of a James Bond movie - it felt a bit remote and cold.

Oh Reese, normally I find that you have pretty good taste but I am utterly baffled by the praise for this. It started out promisingly enough and then devolved into a hot mess. It felt like the author had plot outlines for 5 different books and just decided to incorporate them all. I thought it was genuinely terrible.

arubabookwoman I generally like Denise Mina, but I agree thus one was a big mess! 4y
MicheleinPhilly @arubabookwoman It was my first by her and now I‘m reluctant to give her another chance. 4y

I enjoyed this, although what makes it intriguing--the MC not being a "detective" but someone who stumbles across a death through a "true crime" podcast whose chapters alternate with the story narrative--also made it a bit difficult to follow. Lots of strong female characters.

A fresh, modern crime novel with a great protagonist and a writing that‘s a cut above most crime fiction. Anna the protagonist is a strong, flawed woman and I enjoyed her odd couple trip with Fin to investigate the Dana yacht murders. The true crime podcast storyline is well done & of the moment. Last sections were far fetched but it would be great on screen & to discuss at book club.

I liked it. Unreliable narrator, double lives, double mysteries. Anna is a wife and mother who loves true crime podcasts and books. While distracting herself by listening to a podcast the day her husband leaves her, she realizes it's a story about a man she once knew. She sets off looking into the mystery of his death when her past starts to catch back up with her. This time it she may not survive. I thought it was fun, despite figuring it out.

This is probably the worst book I have read in awhile. Unrealistic story, woman just finds out her husband is leaving her for her friend and her reaction is oh let‘s get really involved with a podcast that happens to connect with her life! I was excited about this book initially. A woman whose husband has just left her and taken her 2 kids with him is listening to a true crime podcast and finds she knows one of the victims. She investigates (what else is she going to, right?). The middle got murky for me and by the big reveal I didn‘t really care who did what anymore. It was just meh for me.

I‘m a big fan of Denise Mina and have been reading her for years. I was, however disappointed in Conviction. It recounts implosion of two marriages, and the aftermath. I found Anna and Fin somewhat two-dimensional characters, even when presented by their back stories. The road trip and the lurking villains were pretty dull. I missed Mina‘s Glaswegian voice. There are far better options in her back list. Bring back “tartan noir!”
