From the Caldecott Medal-winning creator of The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck comes a breathtaking new voyage. In this magnificent reimagining of the form he originated, two stand-alone stories--the first in nearly 400 pages of continuous pictures, the second in prose--create a beguiling narrative puzzle. The journey begins at sea in 1766, with a boy named Billy Marvel. After surviving a shipwreck, he finds work in a London theatre. There, his family flourishes for generations as brilliant actors until 1900, when young Leontes Marvel is banished from the stage. Nearly a century later, runaway Joseph Jervis seeks refuge with an uncle in London. Albert Nightingale's strange, beautiful house, with its mysterious portraits and ghostly presences, captivates Joseph and leads him on a search for clues about the house, his family, and the past. A gripping adventure and an intriguing mystery The Marvels is a loving tribute to the power of story.

#SchoolSpirit Day 8: In this beautifully illustrated story, the reader gets introduced to Joseph Jervis who ran away from his #BoardingSchool to find his uncle named Albert Nightingale who lives in London. The house seems haunted with strange noises. This is a Selznick creation that one should add to one‘s book shelf. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-aNo #LatePost

Once again Brian Selznick has amazed me & my boys with a fabulous story based on a unique history. I love the pictures & text, with magic & history. This story covers some really tough topics, which my 6 and 8 year olds are not quite ready to get the full reality about but give a good baseline for empathy of the topics. They asked a lot of tough questions while I was reading, too. “That‘s what life is [...] miracles and sadness, side by side.”

This fantasy book is amazing. It was a quick read since a lot of it is illustrations. I love the way the book is set up and how Brian Selznick uses illustrations and story to convey a plot. The characters are amazingly deep and the intense events that are discussed are so important. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. I cried at the end it was so good!!

Modern fantasy. This is a story I definitely need to keep reading. The first story hooks you in with the art and makes you want to keep reading until you‘ve made it to that final page. This story is perfect for older children and up.

The Marvels by Brian Selznick, 2015. This is a wonderful modern fantasy story as it binds together two stories, one of illustration and one of literature. The first story is almost a new tale on an introductory chapter and it tells the story in just as much detail with the beautiful cross hatched drawing and the second story brings you in with just the year printed in big bold numbers before the words even begin.

I absolutely LOVE the golden rim along the pages of the book as well as the page covering illustrations. They are dark and grainy, which brings me back in time. Additionally I like how the pages fill the two pages at a time.

This story begins with a shipwreck leading Billy to london and discovering his family‘s past and history, especially regarding theatre. I think observing the illustrations first and then reading the text will help to spark the reader's imagination and creative process. I think this story would be an excellent modern fantasy to have in any classroom, it really lets children explore and understand patterns of illustration.

Another great book by Selznick, that made you think the entire time & is a “marvel”-ous story for you to enjoy 😊😊 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

KateFulfordAuthor @CraftyBookNerd1 perhaps you could consider my debut? Reviews are saying: “I loved this book more than I initially thought I would. Fulford infuses her characters with intense personalities that are prone to clashing with those of others. I loved Eve from the very beginning..." It‘s been nominated for The People's Book Prize 2018 too!

#HeyJune Day 30: The art in this gorgeous book begins in 1766 aboard a ship named the Kraken, hence a lot of #Yesterday here. Fast forward to 1990, the text-narrative, introduce readers to Joseph who ran away from his boarding school to find his uncle in London. A totally beautiful must-read Selznick creation. Brian Selznick is a magician. I've never read books as gorgeous as his and each one has its own special qualities. I do have to say that this was my least favorite but by no means does that mean it's a bad book!!!! Joseph runs away from his boarding school to find his uncle, a theater family, a house stuck in time and quickly realizes "aut visum aut non". Rich in detail and heavy on the feels, this story doesn't disappoint! #kidlitAtoZ

I love how Selznick's books introduce so many other bits and pieces of history, art and now poetry! This is one of my favorite poems & it was such a pleasure to stumble on it! 💜

IamIamIam @DGRachel When you get brave enough to take off your MG swimmies, jump into these books! You will not be disappointed, I promise!!! There are tons of gorgeous illustrations too!! 🤗 7y
DGRachel Thanks! 😂 7y
IamIamIam @DGRachel 😉 I'm halfway through this one, but out of the 3 I enjoyed Wonderstruck the most, maybe because part of it takes place in NYC. Do get the print copies, though. I feel like these would lose a lot in the art in digital format. 7y

Well this was a strange one. The best I can say is the artwork was lovely. The first 400 pages of pencil sketches seemed to promise adventure and theatrical shenanigans.

The remainder of the book is a tad dull. The setting is the 1990s, although weirdly everyone still behaves like characters from Dickens. The most incongruous part being a horse drawn carriage taken to the theatre. Where do you even park it ?

Slightly disappointing.

ClairesReads On track! Yass! 7y
Redheadrambles @ClairesReads yeah finally found a book for the task about LGBT 🏳️‍🌈 author of YA. This was an odd task I thought as I felt like I had to go searching for authors orientation.... anyway yes another ✔️ 7y

Maybe the play wasn't about miracles. No, maybe it was about the passage of time, and the need for patience, and the ability to forgive. Maybe Shakespeare was saying that even in a world where miracles can happen, there's still going to be pain, and loss, and regret. Because sometimes people die and you can't bring them back. That's what life is Joseph realized, miracles and sadness, side by side.

Nobody makes you feel like a speed reader like Brian Selznick! 390 pages in 70ish minutes, managing to convey a multigenerational story about living up to family expectations with nothing more than illustrations. 😍

geodynamical_nonfiction I had to Google the average reading speed to get a baseline. But all the results are in words per minute, not pages per minute. You must be pretty high up there. 8y
BookFreakOut @geodynamical A regular book of 390 pages would probably take me maybe 7-8 hours, so there's that for a reference. In this book, everything up to the bookmark is just illustrations, then it switches to text. They're separate stories but will come together somehow, it's a cool reading experience. 8y
geodynamical_nonfiction @BookFreakOut okay, yeah, I didn't realize the first half was illustrations. I get it now. 😀 8y
StaceyKondla I ❤❤❤❤ this book so much! It made me cry and it was amazing! 8y
BookFreakOut @StaceyKondla I reached the end of the first illustrated potion and was left just staring at the blank pages dividing the sections. His power to communicate only with images is amazing, and the words are just as good. 8y
