The Handmaid s TalemeetsThe Selectionin this darkly riveting tale that BCCB said Will have fans of Oliver s Delirium, Cass s The Selection, and DeStefano s Wither breathless. The Jewel means wealth, the Jewel means beauty but for Violet, the Jewel means servitude. Born and raised in the Marsh, Violet is destined for the Jewel. She is trained as a surrogate for the royalty and is bought by the Duchess of the Lake at auction. And she quickly learns the brutal truths that lie beneath the Jewel s glittering facade: the cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life.Violet must accept the ugly realities of her life . . . all while trying to stay alive. But before she can accept her fate, Violet meets a handsome boy who is also under the Duchess s control, and a forbidden love erupts. But their illicit affair has consequences, which will cost them both more than they bargained for. And toeing the line between being calculating and rebellious, Violet must decide what, and who, she is willing to risk for her own freedom."

I liked Violet but at some point she started to act quite reckless. Villain character was interesting!

I really loved how dark and disgusting the world was - and at the same time you could nothing else than keep reading to find out even more disturbing things.

This was really fast pacing. Instalove was the thing I really hated and I just couldn't feel it. There were really intriguing world, plotting happening and some twists to keep me reading.

TheSpineView It helps so much if the character is interesting. Well done! 2y

My regimes books for last month. I thoroughly enjoyed most of these but I‘m not likely to ever reread them. So I need to make more room for new fun books! Have y‘all read any of these?

JillsBookshelf I‘ve read Truly Devious. I don‘t usually like mysteries, but that one was pretty good. Are you going to read the sequel? 4y
Phaedra @JillsBookshelf yea I‘m hoping to. I think there is also a third book. 4y

A cross between Handmaid's Tale and Wither, this is a dark tale of court gossip and secrets in a dystopia world. I would only recommend this for older YA readers due to content and there is some insta love (gross). (19/01/2020, 4⭐)

Unpopular opinion time:
Yes; I didn't like this one.
Now I could rant and tell you why...
OR
I can go read another book... Preferably a better one.

So I'm going to go for the second option.

I‘ve grouped all the books of the “Lone City Trilogy” together because after the more adult darker reading streak I‘m on lately this seemed light. Don‘t get me wrong, I liked it. It‘s a dystopia with a “Handmaiden‘s Tale” vibe (in a genetic sense though). It did have dark parts and mature content and I probably would have enjoyed it more 3 months ago.

The Jewel is a refreshing combo of dystopian YA crossed with a fluffy royal read with a dash of fantasy thrown in for good measure. What results is a fast-paced, page-turning thriller, which is also full of glittery girly bits, which makes it a lot of fun. Ewing has created a precarious world in The Jewel, and readers will be left guessing as they try to figure out this game alongside Violet.

To be honest, I‘m not sure why I started listening to this. I‘m not usually a ballgown cover reader, so take my review with a grain of salt. Things I liked: manipulative, creepy royalty; Raven and the friendship between her and Violet; the honest and somewhat disgusting violence of the human body. I can‘t really pinpoint what I didn‘t like. I listened to it in an addictive way but kept getting annoyed, wanting to just know what would happen.

merelybookish Is it YA? I often find YA irritating on audio. 7y
readinginthedark @merelybookish Yeah, it is YA. The narrator was good for the main character, though. Maybe it‘s just because I didn‘t like the main character as much as the others? She‘s really bad at reading people, but she trusts anyone who seems trustworthy to her. 🙄Eh, it was interesting anyway. I probably liked this one better than I would like The Selection, which I‘ve heard is primarily a romance. 7y
BookFreakOut I liked this one decently well but never cared to continue the series, I think The Belles (out in Feb) is a better option. It has many similar qualities and was a solid 5/5 for me: similar manipulative power structure and commodification of people with a special power, but less romance, plus exquisite detail. (edited) 7y

BookFreakOut And yes, The Selection is primarily a romance. 7y
readinginthedark @BookFreakOut Sounds interesting! Thanks! 7y
Scarlett_ohara I loved this series and I was so shocked to see so many negative reviews. I found it so addictive. To each their own I guess 😊 (edited) 7y
readinginthedark @Scarlett_ohara Oh, absolutely! That happens to me with other books I‘ve absolutely loved, and I‘m a firm believer in reading what works for you. 👍🏻Honestly, I don‘t think I was the intended audience for this, since I gravitate toward adult or middle grade books more than YA in general, and the cover didn‘t really attract me. I just happened to come across it on Overdrive and wanted something light to cleanse my palette. I‘m glad you enjoyed it! 7y
Scarlett_ohara @readinginthedark I actually didn't even know what was on the cover. I read almost exclusively ebooks (this is what happens when you live in a small apartment 😁). 7y
readinginthedark @Scarlett_ohara Oh yeah, I can see getting used to not seeing the covers that way! 7y

Holy shit what an ending!

Interesting story, although a bit dull at times. Characters weren't fully relatable though they were likable. Romance was a bit rushed and I wasn't really feeling it.

Story itself was something new and made me think about their system quite a lot.

Someone mentioned that this is a cross between the Selection series and The Handmaid's Tale, and I think that gives a good approximation of the writing (definitely YA, somewhat reminiscent of the Selection) and the plot (a dystopian world where certain girls are "chosen" to become surrogates pregnant with royal fetuses). That description hooked me, and I certainly enjoyed the book. It ends on a cliffhanger, so that I'm eager to start the sequel.

ValerieAndBooks Those covers are so different that I can see how that'd happen. But I thought amazon had a way of letting you know if you've ordered something before from them? If it's not too late you might be able to "return" it even if it's an e-book. I ordered an ebook once by mistake instead of a paper copy once and had no problem returning it. 7y
Sarah83 maybe they have two different isbn numbers? 7y
Ubookquitous Even kindle books can be returned - go to manage devices and content on your account page - find the book and it should have an option to return 7y
julesG @Abbymom - sadly one cannot sell or gift kindle books. 7y
julesG @ValerieAndBooks @Ubookquitous - I'll try returning it. But I bought both a while ago. I am sure there was no warning about a previous purchase of the book. @Sarah83 that might be the problem, different publishers, different ISBN. 7y

coffeewithbooks What if we trade ? @julesG 7y
julesG @Abbymom I would trade, but amazon doesn't offer this. I can try to return it. (I hate this about eBooks, not being able to give them to somebody else.) 7y
Ubookquitous Generally- they let you return even if older- pretty sure they know if it has been read or not - if the "return" isn't there send an email to support 7y
coffeewithbooks Oh okay 7y

I didn't know what to expect when I first laid my eyes on this book, but Amy Ewing did an incredible job creating her dystopian world. The book is about a world where the upper class is infertile and young lower class women are auctioned off as surrogates. Highly recommend this series!

Basement_Bookcase Is it a lot like The Handmaids Tale? 7y

Finally picked up The Jewel by Amy Ewing the other day and actually quite liked it, despite the fact that I had a HUGE problem with the romance in this book. The world as described as in The Jewel really fascinates me, though it really scares me as well. Two days ago I've finished 'The Jewel' and if we ignore the so-called 'love story' the book was really good. It's not about - like the cover suggested - pageantry, princesses, princes etc. but about servitude and oppression. It's a tough topic and it has given me goosebumps of horror several times. I read the second book atm and I'm really excited about what happens next!

It was promoted as an interesting mash-up of "The Selection" series and "The Handmaid's Tale" which I was intrigued by. Better world building then "The Selection" that's for damn sure, mixed with a bit of magic. The romance was pretty easy to see coming, glad there was no YA triangle, but it was fast. That said this book felt written for younger readers, despite the forced teenage pregnancies etc. Def a lower reading level but a quick cute read.
