Lamentation
Lamentation | C.J. Sansom
As Henry VIII lies on his deathbed, an incendiary manuscript threatens to tear his court apart. Summer, 1546. King Henry VIII is slowly, painfully dying. His Protestant and Catholic councilors are engaged in a final and decisive power struggle; whoever wins will control the government. As heretics are hunted across London, and radical Protestants are burned at the stake, the Catholic party focuses its attack on Henry's sixth wife--and Matthew Shardlake's old mentor--Queen Catherine Parr. Shardlake, still haunted by his narrow escape from death the year before, steps into action when the beleaguered and desperate Queen summons him to Whitehall Palace to help her recover a dangerous manuscript. The Queen has authored a confessional book, Lamentation of a Sinner, so radically Protestant that if it came to the King's attention it could bring both her and her sympathizers crashing down. Although the secret book was kept hidden inside a locked chest in the Queen's private chamber, it has inexplicably vanished. Only one page has been recovered--clutched in the hand of a murdered London printer. Shardlake's investigations take him on a trail that begins among the backstreet printshops of London, but leads him and his trusty assistant Jack Barak into the dark and labyrinthine world of court politics, a world Shardlake swore never to enter again. In this crucible of power and ambition, Protestant friends can be as dangerous as Catholic enemies, and those with shifting allegiances can be the most dangerous of all.

The last book of the Shardlake series and as full of the twists and turns that you'd expect. I love these characters, and Nicholas is a fine addition but I did wonder if Matthew will ever learn from past mistakes, it seems not.
This book sees Matthew return to the double crossings and manipulations of Henry VIII's Court, fraught with the ever shifting agendas, religious alliances, and Henry's ever changeable moods.
A fantastic end to the series.

My first completed book for #OutstandingOctober. 😃

This is the 6th and possibly penultimate book in the Shardlake series. Our Tudor era lawyer is once again drawn into political machinations when he is asked by Lord Parr to find a stolen manuscript on behalf of his niece, Queen Catherine. Hotheaded Nicholas Overton is a good addition as an apprentice lawyer. As usual, Shardlake doesn‘t know when to let sleeping dogs lie, which leads to danger.

Andrew65 I hope he will be writing more. Well done 👏👏👏 3y
Ruthiella @Andrew65 I hope too that his health allows him to continue writing. 3y
Andrew65 @Ruthiella 🤞🤞🤞 It is one of the best series set in that period. (edited) 3y
TiredLibrarian @Andrew65 @Ruthiella Is C. J.Sansom having health problems? I do love this series; so well done. 3y
Ruthiella @TiredLibrarian Apparently he was diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago. I have read elsewhere he intended to take the series up to the Elizabethan era, so hopefully he will persevere and write more. 🤞 3y

Finnished my reading.
Love the history of the Tudor. A story full of intrigue and conspiracy. An excellent description of the glittering castle on the one side and the smell of death on the other. Such was life at the Tudor castle.

I weigh my holidays on the number of books read so this 700 page monster which as 6th in the wonderful shardlake series has been sat on my shelf for a while due to its size + guess what I finished it really quickly as i was totally thrown back into his tudor world. Here Catherine parr asks for the lawyers help to find a piece of writing on religion that could have her head. Brilliant research about the period adds to the joy of these books.

Crazeedi I do have to get back to this series! I think I'm on book 3 or 4 . This one looks good! 5y

Summer of 1546 and King Henry VIII is dying. The Queen's manuscript is missing and the King has not seen it yet and would consider it to be heresy. Matthew Shardlake is hired to help her find it. This is my favorite historical mystery series and should not be missed. Excellent plots and unique characters makes for a series that is truly a literary masterpiece.

I think we know surprisingly many things only one third into the book. I am not surprised that the burning is a main theme! A lot of beheadings ahead. What do you think Bealknap was talking about? Did you feel sorry for him? What did you think about the citizen‘s arrest? And what about the book? Why hasn‘t it been used? How many people will die in this book... @EadieB @Andrew65 @TiredLibrarian

EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 I think Belknap knew Shardlake is in love with the queen and wanted to see what Henry would do about that! I think whoever took the book is waiting for an opportune time to show it to Henry. (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads Books are dangerous! Readers are dangerous 😂 Women who write are dangerous! @EadieB @Andrew65 @TiredLibrarian 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads This particular woman was very stupid. Fancy writing that. Very different side shown of Shardlake die to loving the Queen. Is she his Achilles heel? The Queen is making Shardlake risk all, but not just putting himself at risk. Guy seems to be on to what Shardlake is risking! @TiredLibrarian @EadieB 6y

Tove_Reads @EadieB @Andrew65 Already excited about the last bit tomorrow! Btw, I‘m 9 in line for Tombland. There are 3 copies at the library atm. 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I have Tombland on hold but no books have arrived at the library yet. @Andrew65 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB ☹️ I placed a hold immediately when I realized there was a new one. I was number 21 then. 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I‘m probably top of the list as I usually am with new books. Not too many people but a hold on new books. The hold list gets longer after the books come in. 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Same here. Was the first one to get Becoming here, now there are a few thousand waiting. Somehow I missed the release of Tombland. I‘m getting sloppy! 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Tombland is not published in US until January 29, 2019 so I should get it in February sometime. @Andrew65 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB That should work out perfectly then! I‘ll probably get mine in Feb/March. They have at least one new copy coming in. 6y
Andrew65 Looking at the number of holds for Tombland like to be late February / early March at least before I get it unless I go solo audiobook route. @EadieB @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 I‘ve now finished the book. Not going to say what, but boy be ready for this ending! Powerful !!!! You certainly won‘t forget it. I listened twice to those last few chapters. @EadieB @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 We can decide when we find out for sure when we can all get a copy. @Tove_Reads 6y

Tove_Reads Didn‘t you feel sorry for Shardlake? Then again, I guess you know that it won‘t end well if you fall in love with the queen. @EadieB @Andrew65 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Falling in love with Queen was a big mistake. @Andrew65 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB And who paid the price, Barak! 😱😥 @Tove_Reads 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I somehow always felt sorry for him. He suffers, no matter what. Sometimes he can blame himself, but mostly others. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I felt so sorry for Tamasin and especially for Barak! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Amazed he did that to such a central character. I wonder if originally he planned to end the series with the death of Henry. @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I‘m wondering how much further he going to go in the history. @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Here‘s a comment from Sansom‘s FB page: Delighted to finish Tombland. I have waited a long time to write about little-known English peasant rebellions of 1549 in which more rebels killed than the 1381 Peasant‘s Revolt, and Kett‘s rebellion in Norfolk was the largest. Book long time in making because of lots of research and delays thru health problems. It‘s a murder mystery with ramifications in and out the rebel camp. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks for this. 😊 6y

So, how is everyone liking it? What about her book - Lamentation? Thoughts? Who took it and why? To create a scandal? To show it to the King? To gain something from her? Do you think the burning has a bigger meaning throughout the book?

EadieB @tove_reads @andrew65 I‘m liking it better than the last book. Catherine Parr is in trouble. Don‘t know who took her book but King Henry is not going to be happy! @TiredLibrarian (edited) 6y

Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Enjoying the book so far, halfway through Monday‘s section. It is always great quality writing, and as usual a bit of a slow burner in the book but C J Sansom always gives you plenty of time to get into the time period and the characters. Looks like Richard Rich is going to figure prominently again. A villain to love to hate. Shardlake and the Queen need to watch their back with him after the last book. @EadieB (edited) 6y

I was lent two of C.J.Sansom‘s books by my Uncle, Dissolution and Lamentation. These are of the same series, but have several books in between. However I didn‘t feel like this book lost anything with me not having read the others in the series. Events of importance were noted briefly in the main story, and was easy to follow despite having only met the main character previously.

This was a slow burner, but picked up quickly and was enjoyable!

Daisey I love this series, and the fact that the books can be read individually is one of the things I appreciate about it. 6y
Bookworm54 @Daisey exactly! I‘m sure they are even better in order, but it is nice to be able to just dip in and out of a series and still be able to follow and enjoy the story :) 6y

Beautiful brown covers from the Shardlake series. The cover of Lamentation depicts an old wooden door and Dark Fire‘s cover looks like an old manuscript.

I am now up to date with the Shardlake series. Lamentation is set in the period of Henry VIII‘s, last days as his health fails and his paranoia reaches new heights. Shardlake is tasked by the Queen to recover “The Lamentations of a Sinner” a book she authored and which has been stolen and could change the balance between the radicals and conservatives. This story is good involving less successful detection and more historical palace politics

Dragon Sounds good, I'm still a bit behind in the series. 7y

I love this series of historical mysteries about a hunchback lawyer investigating cases in Tudor England. This one takes place during 1546 at the end of the reign of King Henry VIII and deals specifically with Queen Catherine Parr and the religious turmoil of the time. Sansom's descriptions of London in the 1540s are fantastic and the characters intriguing.

Daisey @Texreader This is definitely not a new favorite in the series; I thought it dragged a bit in the second half between some big events. I wasn't thrilled with Shardlake being a bit at odds with 2 other favorites (Guy and Barak), but the future plans in the epilogue have me completely ready for another!! 8y

Texreader So which has been your favorite Shardlake book? 8y
Daisey @Texreader I'm not sure; it's been a while since I started reading them and I might have to go back and look through them to choose. I started with Dark Fire so that's the one that immediately comes to mind, and I remember being completely wrapped up in Dissolution as well. I think I liked the first couple the best, just because the world the author created was new to me. 8y

The hunchback lawyer/detective set in Tudor England is simply the #bestnarrator.
