Across North America, flocks of birds hurl themselves into airplanes, causing at least a dozen to crash. Thousands of people die. Fearing terrorism, the United States government grounds all flights, and millions of travelers are stranded. Among them are Reese and her debate team partner and longtime crush David, who are in Arizona when the disaster occurs. On their drive home to San Francisco, along a stretch of empty highway in the middle of the Nevada night, a bird flies into their headlights. The car flips over. When they wake up in a military hospital, the doctor won't tell them what happened, where they are--or how they've been miraculously healed. Things become even stranger when Reese returns home. San Francisco feels like a different place with police enforcing curfew, hazmat teams collecting dead birds, and a strange presence that seems to be following her. When Reese unexpectedly collides with the beautiful Amber Gray, her search for the truth is forced in an entirely new direction-and threatens to expose a vast global conspiracy that the government has worked for decades to keep secret. Adaptation is a bold contemporary science-fiction thriller from the acclaimed author of Ash.

Ebook. Slow beginning on this YA scifi. It has some of the typical tropes of YA, but there's LGBTQ rep and I was curious as to where it was going. It leaves on a cliffhanger, which I always find rather rude. I've already got the next one in the duology queued up.
I think my favorite character was Julian, because, I mean, every conspiracy has a nugget of truth 🤷‍♀️

My reading buddies are Zeus and Calli for the #readathon #deweyapril Since I took this picture Zeus has taken over the couch and Calli has become very whiny so they aren‘t the best buddies. In good news I finally finished a book and want a break from my ereader so I‘m selecting a paper book to read! 😊 #dogsoflitsy

Adaptation was a weird read but I really liked it! Had dual gender love interests and some sci fi elements and moved quickly!

brandybear22 Aliens maybe 🤷‍♂️ but no birds 🦅 I don‘t think 6y
kgriffith @brandybear22 except the ducks along the banks and the seagulls walking the disk. 🦆 Pretty sure this is some kind of milestone: “first time the random jpg I grab while testing a feature during weekly all-call is of the two of us” is A Thing. 😉 6y

brandybear22 @kgriffith oh yes, those crazy birds... exactly _how_ was this random... 6y
kgriffith @brandybear22 I opened up a Finder window and scrolled until I saw a jpg file extension? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 6y
brandybear22 @kgriffith that does sound random, and milestone-y, though I have no idea what that means (I don‘t need to) glad you thought of me, and that we look super cute 6y

It‘s so frustrating when a book that seems at first to normalize queer identity, then baldly shames relationship approaches other than strict monogamy. Or to take it one further as in this case, applies gender to how we approach intimate relationships. 😒

RiaWritten Ugh. Bummer. 6y
CouronneDhiver Oh, interesting! I have no context to work with but I read that quote totally differently... like exasperation between men‘s and women‘s expectations, rather than shaming. Another reason I love Litsy: so many perspectives! 🙂 6y

Mixed feelings about this one, definitely did not like the ending. It was fast paced and all, twisting in a teenage, coming into yourself love story, and I‘ll admit I didn‘t predict the sci fit plot, though I did see where the coming of age and romance was going, and I wasn‘t having any of it. Also there were several themes that opened up, but never went anywhere, a couple of things alluded to, but didn‘t explore, the parental behavior was off.

sometimes I feel this way, but more often than not I try to convey how I feel without putting it to words, actions being what they are, and I think it‘s all coming across just fine, but 🤷‍♂️ maybe not always as well as I intend (in some ways it‘s about being less vulnerable, but often it feels more so)

kgriffith Just got to this part. I didn‘t think I would finish before tomorrow as I just started it today but it‘s a fast and simple read. I don‘t hate it but I‘m definitely not sucked in. 6y

Not going to make my book group due to vacation, but started the book on the dock today. I‘m sure it will be a quick read, I‘m trying to remember what made this book queer enough that we chose it 🤷‍♂️

(Beautiful full moon, just read until it was too dark to keep going)

4/5⭐ Whew, this book was action packed from page one! I couldn't put it down and finished across just two evenings. There were definitely plot moments that felt weak to me, but overall I really enjoyed the complex characters, their diverse relationships, and the consistent tension. It was especially nice to see a positively portrayed mother character in a YA sci-fi. #projectSAMS #TIABchallenge

Slajaunie Sounds interesting. Love sci-fi and teen! Glad there is a positive Mom role model as well. 6y
hissingpotatoes @Slajaunie For more teen sci-fi, I definitely recommend Origin by Jessica Khoury. The fast pacing is similar to Adaptation. 6y
Slajaunie Sounds interesting. I will add it to my tbr. 6y

One of my most favorite things is reading a book and then seeing it adapted to a movie, television series, play, etc. What are your favorites? Anything so bad you still had to watch it? Looking to add to my #tbr #booktomoviereads

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego The best Book to Movie adaptation IMO is The Revenant. The movie is far better than the book. As for TV adaptations I liked The Handmaid's Tale, American Gods, Sharp Objects & Big Little Lies. 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego The worst one I've seen recently was The Girl With All the Gifts. Awful movie, great book. 6y
swynn I almost always hate a movie if I've read the book first, especially dramatic adaptations of nonfiction works, which tend to become ... well, not nonfiction. I find "The Imitation Game" unwatchable, for instance. But anything by Alfred Hitchcock is at least as good as its source material; I love love Elia Kazan's East of Eden; and Spike Jonze's adaptation of Susan Orlean's Adaptation it's flat-out brilliant. 6y
See All 20 Comments
Gitanjali I agree with @swynn. I‘m a book purist :) but I thought lord of the rings was fine. 6y
Indexasaurus Even though I love the books more, the Potter movies and the Game of Thrones series are my favorites. On the opposite end, I love the movie versions of The Witches of Eastwick and Practical Magic but didn‘t care for either book (I swear I‘m not obsessed with witches!). 6y
Lel2403 To kill a mockingbird....and The Birds.....or maybe Shawshank Redemption....too many to choose ! 6y
LaLecture @swynn I had the same thought about non-fiction to movie adaptions with “Hidden Figures”. The book was a list of facts and the movie was a rather cheesy story (even though I liked it, viewed separately from the book). 6y
LaLecture I think “Stardust” is even better than the book in some parts 🙈. My favourite book to movie adaption might be “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”. It‘s a bit different from the book but you can still feel the book‘s spirit as the author worked on the movie to. 6y
LauraRenae White Oleander. Both the book and the movie are fantastic and yet so different. 6y
dragondrool The Silence of the Lambs. Fried Green Tomatoes. It 2018. I also really liked The Shipping News. 6y
Amiable "Mystic River" by Dennis Lehane. Best adaptation to a movie ever. 6y
MotionChickness That was a tough one! I‘m so anal about book to screens... like irrationally lol. I think The Martian was done very well... and Paper Towns! 6y
Crystalblu The Princess Bride and Silence of the Lambs. Same as my favorite movies😜 It must say something about me that my favorite movies were books first 🤔 6y
madamereadsalot1 Fight Club, Coraline, Howl's Moving Castle, The Hunger Games trilogy, etc. 6y
hissingpotatoes The movie I think most closely resembles its book, and which I loved both of, is Holes by Louis Sachar. 6y
WolfGirl16 I had such a difficult time watching Ready Player One as a movie because I loved the book so much 6y
zzz Gone Girl. The book was just ok for me but I really liked the movie...thought the female lead was perfect👍 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @WolfGirl16 I enjoyed the movie for what it was but after like 15 seconds I had to pretend that I have read the book. The book was friggin amazing! 6y
WolfGirl16 @Whimsical.Curiosity I thought of one this afternoon. I‘m completely in love with BBCs Sherlock. An amazing show based on great books. #iamsherlocked 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @WolfGirl16 good call!! Love me some Cumberbatch #swooooon 6y

I liked the idea overall but it definitely stretched my suspension of disbelief a few times. I didn‘t find the characters particularly engaging and I almost didn‘t care what happened to them 🤷🏼‍♀️ While I appreciated Lo‘s handling of Reese‘s sexuality, love triangles aren‘t my bag no matter what combination of genders is involved 👋🏻

#Riotgrams Day 17: freebies. One of the cool things about moderating writer panels is that I sometimes get free books. My fav freebie came in 2012. I was moderating a panel at the James River Writers Conference which included the amazing YA author Malinda Lo. I had contacted her publisher before the release of her sci-fi novel Adaptation to see if I could get an ARC. The publisher surprised me by sending a hardback copy instead. #MalindaLo #scifi
