"Utterly romantic." --Jenny Han, NYT bestselling author of To All the Boys I've Loved Before The bestselling author of Windfall and The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight returns with a meet-cute romance about Hugo and Mae, two teens who are thrown together on a cross-country train trip that will teach them about love, each other, and the futures they can build for themselves. It's the perfect idea for a romantic week together: traveling across America by train. But then Hugo's girlfriend dumps him. Her parting gift: the tickets for their long-planned last-hurrah-before-uni trip. Only, it's been booked under her name. Nontransferable, no exceptions. Mae is still reeling from being rejected from USC's film school. When she stumbles across Hugo's ad for a replacement Margaret Campbell (her full name!), she's certain it's exactly the adventure she needs to shake off her disappointment and jump-start her next film. A cross-country train trip with a complete stranger might not seem like the best idea. But to Mae and Hugo, both eager to escape their regular lives, it makes perfect sense. What starts as a convenient arrangement soon turns into something more. But when life outside the train catches up to them, can they find a way to keep their feelings for each other from getting derailed? A Junior Library Guild Selection "This warm, romantic, never overly sentimental story is told with humor and heart....A deeply satisfying read about a life-changing journey full of poignant moments." --Kirkus, starred review "Rich and introspective...this will appeal to any teen that appreciates a thoughtful love story." --Booklist

This was definitely a YA read. It was sweet but not as developed as I‘d hoped. I definitely enjoyed the characters and would love to see more about the families ❤️

This book was such a cute read. It was very well written. Sentence full of poetry and every element mentioned had their own clear purpose that came together very nicely at the end. It also had a happy ending, which I always enjoy. Would definitely recommend to romance readers.

Hugo‘s girlfriend, Margaret Campbell, broke up with him & left him with 2 tickets for a train trip across North America. Her name is on the bookings for non-refundable the trip. Hugo needs someone with the same name to accompany him on the trip. That‘s where Mae (Margaret Campbell) comes in. They travel the country together and discover it was more than a trip.

I really liked this book. It was quiet and sweet if that makes sense. It reminded me of that one summer so many of us have when we are not quite full-fledged adults but are distinctly aware that those who are in our life for that brief space of time might completely change the trajectory of our life.

The parent in me was horrified that they did this but the rest of me thoroughly enjoyed this story. Both of the MCs were sweet and smart and respectful each other. I loved that they both had close relationships with their families, as I get tired of parents in YA books being either obstructive or clueless. It was a bit predictable but I was exactly in the mood for this. 👍💙

I've randomly encountered lots of Denver mentions in this week's reading. 🧡💜💚 And this one even includes our fabulous local bookstore. 😊

Aimeesue I miss the Tattered Cover. One of my favorites. ❤️❤️❤️ 5y
bookandbedandtea @Aimeesue I miss the old, huge store in Cherry Creek. I've been to the other locations but only once or twice each. ☹ 5y
Aimeesue @bookandbedandtea I had no idea that one closed! I lived in the Springs for 7 years back in the day, and I used to go to that one.☹️ 5y
bookandbedandtea @Aimeesue Rent in Cherry Creek became so high that they finally refused to pay it. Now they have 3 (4 maybe? 🤔) locations scattered around the metro area. Their flagship location is now in Capital Hill. 5y

This tale begins when Hugo is dumped by his girlfriend, and he has a non-refundable trip planned for them. Hugo decides to put an ad out there, to see if there is a woman who would like to join him on this cross country train trip. That is where we meet Mae. She is looking for an adventure after not being accepted to the film school of her choice.

This is a really cute YA novel about two complete strangers who wind up traveling by train together across the U.S. The circumstances on how this came to be is one of the best parts so I‘m not giving that away. The whole story takes place over one week but, gosh, a whole lot takes place during those seven days. It was very entertaining and I really cared about what happened to both of the main characters, Mae and Hugo.

Such a cute story! I always love hearing how people met, and when they fell in love. Mae and Hugo‘s story hit all the spots! Both characters have interesting back stories, that made this book hard to put down. The audio version was great! #Book17of2019

This was a cute, easy read. I liked the two main characters and I‘ve always wanted to travel across the country on a train so the story was fun. As a not so YA reader of YA, I did find myself saying, “Your parents will be so worried!”, but it didn‘t get in the way of my enjoyment. (From the Modern Mrs Darcy summer reading list)

An adorable story of teenage love. I listened to the audio book, and really enjoyed the narrators. They did a nice job bringing Hugo and Mae's voices to life. I loved the train setting, and really appreciated how the author wove in themes of race and non-traditional family structure without being too heavy-handed. A feel good book that's just the right side of light and sweet.

One of the main characters in this book is one of a set of sextuplets.
And they are not in it a lot, but when they are, I just love their dynamic.

I am in love with this book - my only complaint is that it isn't longer. This story is so sweet while still touching on some tough subjects. I just adored Mae & Hugo (and their families), they had brilliant chemistry and their banter was great, too. Getting to know them, watching them get to know each other and accompanying them on their journeys was heart-warming. I also loved that the story centered around a cross country train ride. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I just picked this up from the library.

I know I am reading Silksinger right now, but I've had Field Notes on Love on hold for a while now, and if I don't finish before it's due, then I won't be able to renew it because there are other holds placed on it.

Also I am really in the mood for YA contemporary romance.

Hugo is about to set off for a week train ride across America when his girlfriend breaks up with him. The only problem is the tickets are in her name and he needs someone named Margaret Campbell to board the train and use the hotels. So he puts on ad online and Mae answers the post. Little does she know by answering this post it will change both of their lives. This book gave me all the warm and fuzzy feelings!
