From the New York Times bestselling author of All the Ugly And Wonderful Things, a propulsive new novel about a Kansas woman who discovers redemption--and love--when she joins forces with a surprising champion in her race to save her broken family. Zee doesn't consider herself anyone's heroine. Almost six-foot with orange hair and a bum hip, most of her waking hours are spent worrying: about never-ending bills, her gullible, beautiful sister, her five-year-old nephew, and her housebound mother. To Gentry, Zee is the ultimate heroine. They first met two years ago, when the voices Gentry hears called him to be Zee's champion. Though they've barely spoken since, Gentry has kept watch, ready to come to her aid as a modern-day-knight in shining armor. Then Zee's sister is taken hostage during a violent escape at the prison where she volunteers. To protect her family, Zee turns to the last person she ever imagined--Gentry. With the authorities no closer to finding her sister, she decides to take matters into her own hands and, with Gentry at her side, sets in motion a series of events that will alter their lives, and those of everyone they love, forever. From the New York Times bestselling author of All the Ugly and Wonderful Things comes a newly provocative love story between the unlikeliest of people, and a tale of one woman's crooked path to redemption.

I read and loved this book the year it came out, so when I saw the audiobook was available at my library, I thought I would revisit these singular characters and their memorable quest. Pure of heart, brave of spirit, full of honor, and earnest AF! I was just as captivated the second time around.🎧

This was certainly a unique romance and I couldn‘t help but love Gentry. His autistic brain thinking, speaking, living by mid-English norms brought me to a Kansas college semester when I was immersed in Chaucer. I cared about Gentry way more than anything or anyone else so details that didn‘t involve him were of less interest to me.

A relationship that is unusual and complicated, but undeniably beautiful. Characters that are incredibly unique, complex, and (mostly) lovable. A story that is entirely captivating and unlike anything else I have read. The Reckless Oath We Made is remarkable. I did not want it to end, but alas, all good things do.

Also, Bryn Greenwood‘s writing is impeccable. At this rate, I‘m positive I would love and rave about anything she writes.

Twas very unique and captivating. ‘‘Twas makes sense when you read it. There is a fair amount of Middle English which I thought would drag the book down yet it added to it, kudos to the author for this type of “translation”. This is the second book by this author and I admire that she she writes about such gritty dark subjects. First read for #24B42020 #wintergames #Teamnutcracker I am guesstimating 6 hours, at least, burned the day reading❤️

Reviewsbylola I totally forgot about this book. It‘s on my TBR. 5y

A very satisfying audiobook but I'm not used to listening to steamy scenes (only 2 scenes) but it could have been very embarrassing if I had company/kids in the car! The MC is pretty troubled but she has a lot on her plate and she is loyal to the ones she cares about. Gentry was a winning if strange character but I could see why Zee was drawn to him. The ending isn't tidy - neat and tidy wouldn't have worked for the story - but very satisfying.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I wasn‘t sure I would like this book very much, despite it being my August 2019 BOTM pick, but I was pleasantly surprised. Be warned, this is not a particularly happy book that deals with heavy topics. However, I enjoyed the story and the plot was quick-moving and never became slow to read. Greenwood‘s characters are definitely unique and she did well with Gentry and the Medieval English. Overall, a solid read with a bittersweet ending.

Oh Gentry, you have quickly become one of my favorite fictional characters. This book was amazing. After reading the synopsis, I wasn‘t sure if I could get into the story but I decided to take a chance since I loved "All The Ugly and Wonderful Things.” I‘m so glad I did because this is one of the best books that I have read all year. I would highly recommend it!

I just finished this book and it has left me feeling a mixture of emotions. It started with making me feel happy and a little frustrated to ending with complete frustration and the boulder in the stomach type feeling. Bryn Greenwood's writing was addictive and I loved how this book made me feel the whole range of emotions and I can tell already that this story will stick with me for many years to come.

Okay, so I‘ve finished the book and I‘ve come to the conclusion that Gentry > Everybody. He really was a delight to read about and such a beautifully written character, I couldn‘t help but love him. The plot was decent, even though it made me shrug my shoulders in frustration. I do and don‘t like flawed characters, but more importantly, I hate it when it hits so close to home. I guess that‘s a mark of good writing!

Bryn Greenwood is a definite go to author for me now. This book hooked me from the start. I fell in love with Gentry. And even though the MC made bad decisions that annoyed me I was still rooting for it to all work out. This isn't quite as good as her other book All the Ugly and Wonderful Things, but still a definite pick.

Bryn Greenwood does it again! Taking 2 unlikely characters and sharing their story. !!!! I wish I was clever enough to write in medieval language or even talk in it! i would so write this review like how Gentry talks.

I love Gentry and how he wants to be Lady Zee‘s champion. You really not only fall in love with Gentry but watch Zee and him fall in love. 😍

I kissed this book when it arrived at the library. Turns out it was an appropriate response because I ended up loving this one as much as All the Ugly and Wonderful Things. I went in blind and was so pleasantly surprised by the characters. I read the book but also listened to the #audiobook mostly which enhanced Gentry's Middle English. It felt clunky to read but when spoken aloud was actually quite lovely. Definitely recommended 🌟

This is a very unique book and one of the best I‘ve read all year. While it was frustrating to watch the characters make repeated bad decisions and some of the action was a little unbelievable, it made sense in the context of the book. I was here for all of it. Zee and Gentry are characters that will stick with me for a long time. #botm

Bryn Greenwood does it again!!

A love story no one could predict with an equal amount of drama and suspense built in. I just simply could not put this book down. And I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed being thrust into the knights and knaves and tales of chivalry. The Middle English took some time to adjust, but it was well worth it!

While this book didn't immediately suck me in, I did push through it in order to be able to objectively review it. After giving it much thought, I just don't think the book was for me and was mildly disappointed. Perhaps Greenwood should have abandoned the whole romance aspect, as well as Gentry's reenactments, and focused more on the mystery. She is clearly a talented writer, and for that reason, I will read All the Ugly and Wonderful Things.

Oof, I don't even know where to start. All the Ugly and Wonderful Things was by far my favorite book in 2016 so the bar was set *extremely* high, and sadly, as much as it physically pains me to say it, I didn't enjoy this at all. Gentry's whole medieval speech angle felt forced, tedious, and exhausting. I feel like I just got caught in the crosshairs of a drive-by Renaissance fair. This will be a love it or hate it book, for sure #BOTM #WTF

Cinfhen I think you‘re either gonna love the character of Gentry or hate it! I thought he was wayyyyyyy too gimmicky and reading through his dialogue was annoying @Megabooks @swishandflick also given how popular and fantastic her debut was, this book was too far off the mark for me🥺I‘d still try another by her but this book (for me) was disappointing #KeepingItReal 5y
swishandflick @Cinfhen Agreed! Although All the Ugly and Wonderful Things wasn't her debut, she has two other lesser-known books! 5y
Cinfhen Oh, thanks for sharing!! Are her other books good?? 5y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I liked it much more than Ugly Wonderful, mainly because of the lack of creepy pedophilia vibes! 5y
swishandflick @Megabooks I can totally get that. I personally felt the opposite despite it being controversial. To each their own! Curious to continue seeing reviews for this book, bc I definitely feel like Gentry as a character will be polarizing. (edited) 5y
swishandflick @Cinfhen I read Lie Lay Lain a while back and really enjoyed it though I couldn't tell you details. Haha. I haven't read her other one yet, but I have it on my shelf somewhere so it may be time to dig it up 😄 5y

I enjoyed this. If I‘m going to trust anyone to bring two unlikely characters together- one of them who speaks Medieval English- it‘s gonna be Bryn Greenwood. I eagerly awaited the release of this book, and was so glad BOTM chose this as part of their selection. I did enjoy the storyline, but I found this book to be lacking in depth and darkness (compared to her prior novel). Also, the use of Olde English added to the authenticity of the storytelling, but I found those chapters where it was heavily used to be my least favorite. Five stars for creativity, but only a so-so on depth and delivery.
