Does My Head Look Big in This? | Randa Abdel-Fattah
Don't panic - I'm Islamic! Amal is a 16-year-old Melbourne teen with all the usual obsessions about boys, chocolate and Cosmo magazine. She's also a Muslim, struggling to honour the Islamic faith in a society that doesn't understand it. The story of her decision to "shawl up" is funny, surprising and touching by turns.

I was quite underwhelmed by this book. The writing and pacing wasn't very good and there was a bit too much pop culture reference for me (but that could be because I'm old!)

The representation was great and this would probably appeal to a younger audience

Does My Head Look Big In This? 🐶
Is a cute audiobook about a teenage girl in Austraila who decides to wear the hijab. Usually avoid a teenage drama stories but I was curious about this one because my boyfriend is from Saudi Arabia so his sisters wear the hijab. People's reactions can be so negative. Don't think I'd be brave enough to wear a hijab. This was cute and interesting but the ending left me just meh. 🌟🌟🌟

Great window into Australian Islamic culture in the format of a YA novel.

I have mixed feelings about this one. I‘m glad this book exists, that there are books where the Muslim protagonist isn‘t fleeing an abusive relationship or oppressed by her family. But the execution could have been better. Some parts were amazing and beautiful and funny, but a lot of the book just dragged. A big “meh” from me.

Home sick doing some of next week‘s readings for #inls530. One page in, and this narrator has me charmed.

My #TopTenTuesday post was all about YA books that are 10+ years old that still get checked out. I love seeing that some of my old favorites are still popular

The story of a 16-year-old devout Muslim Palestinian living in Australia who decides to wear a hijab full time & everyone, from parents, teachers, friends to people in her neighbourhood, has a reaction. It's a funny YA read, which many can relate to, whether Muslim or non-Muslim. It shows the diversity even within the Muslim communities. The author is an Australian Muslim of Palestinian & Egyptian parentage. #booksbymuslimwomen #readingwomenmonth

I love how Randa Abdel-Fattah took what is a tough topic and made it a fun yet insightful read. I tend not to read YA but I‘m so thoroughly thrilled with this book. It was so real and down to earth, and filled with such fantastic characters.

This was a great panel discussion as part of an all-day readers' advisory seminar on diverse reading. Aussie authors Randa Abdel-Fattah, Bronwyn Bancroft, Will Kostakis, & Benjamin Law all said things that really hit home. #weneedmorediversebooks

Although I didn't personally enjoy this book much (I think plot/character/writing need major work) I acknowledge this def has teen appeal as a Muslim girl version of the fluffy straight girl stuff that abounds in #YA. It's quite pedantic, a bit after-school special, with plenty of educational moments which might be useful for some readers but for me fell flat and took away from the characters feeling like real people. #MuslimShelfSpace

Two #YA books I got out from my library today by and about Muslims. They're for a school project on Muslim YA books. Anyone read either of these? #MuslimShelfSpace

Did some work in the peace and quiet of my local library today, and was super excited to see these #LoveOzYA posters up in the Youth area! So awesome! 😁 I tagged Randa Abdel-Fattah's 'Does My Head Look Big In This?' because I vividly remember reading it during school lunches when I was 14 or 15 - it was probably the first book I read with a hijabi MC

Chachic So many recs! I would love to read all of the titles in those posters. 8y
danistclair @Chachic me too, but they keep releasing more posters 😂 TBH, the only one I've come close to reading all the books on is the Classics poster, and that's cos they are all ones I read in school, or were around when I was a young adult! 8y
Chachic Must have been fun to read those as a young adult. All we read in school were literary titles. 8y
danistclair @Chachic we had those too, but in retrospect, yeah, I didn't realise how lucky we were to be able to read things that we related to and were interested in (although, at the time, we all made noise about Australian literature being boring, because that's what school students do!) 8y

Chose this book for a book club I'm doing at a school and they are really enjoying it! So glad this book exists as it's still such an important read for Muslim Teenagers (but also everyone else). I read this 10yrs ago and it's still funny today. It has its flaws, but it helps to 'normalise' Muslims and it's relatable for many hijabis. So glad the students like it and find it relevant to their lives! #diversebooks 👍🏽

read_diverse_books That's great news! I want to read this book too. 8y

Bailedbailed

So...I'm trying to give myself permission to not finish books. I desperately wanted to like this one but just felt every interaction was preachy and fake teenager-y. Maybe I'm just too old?

beagle.mama It was so freeing once I gave myself that permission. 💜 8y
moranadatter Or maybe it's just not your book. 8y
Beckys_Books I'm still struggling with bailing on a book. I always think it might get better... 8y

Lindseyastin Cover looks cute! Bummer it didn't suck you in. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Beckys_Books I struggled with that for years! I always thought that it might get better, maybe they'll be some twist that will make it worthwhile. It took getting burned a few times & lots of positive self talk to myself about my time being worth more than bad books, when there are so many to read. 8y
BestOfFates @beagle.mama While I still feel guilty there is definitely also a high of freedom! 8y
BestOfFates @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Beckys_Books I think the reason I hesitate is I have really struggled with books I then finished/went back to that I really liked! (Short History of Nearly Everything, Great Expectations, prob other ones I'm forgetting!) 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BestOfFates True, I went back to Jane Eyre and then finished and loved it. So I guess it's a person thing for everyone. I still have a hard time bailing, but I'm finding myself more willing and able to do it I use to be. 8y
