INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Quick conjures up a celluloid world that will be catnip to fans of that era evoking the sensation it was plucked straight from the Warner Bros. vault."--Entertainment Weekly The New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Who Knew Too Much sweeps readers back to 1930s California--where the most dazzling of illusions can't hide the darkest secrets... After escaping from a private sanitarium, Adelaide Blake arrives in Burning Cove, California, desperate to start over. Working at an herbal tea shop puts her on the radar of those who frequent the seaside resort town: Hollywood movers and shakers always in need of hangover cures and tonics. One such customer is Jake Truett, a recently widowed businessman in town for a therapeutic rest. But unbeknownst to Adelaide, his exhaustion is just a cover. In Burning Cove, no one is who they seem. Behind facades of glamour and power hide drug dealers, gangsters, and grifters. Into this make-believe world comes psychic to the stars Madame Zolanda. Adelaide and Jake know better than to fall for her kind of con. But when the medium becomes a victim of her own dire prediction and is killed, they'll be drawn into a murky world of duplicity and misdirection. Neither Adelaide or Jake can predict that in the shadowy underground they'll find connections to the woman Adelaide used to be--and uncover the specter of a killer who's been real all along...

This book is part suspense, part romance, part historical fiction, but it does none of them really well. It was an entertaining read; yet, the history was spotty, the romance bland, and the suspense a little forced. A unique concept, and the different storylines were very creative, but the writing was just okay. Clever title though!

Another great read by Amanda Quick (a.k.a., Jayne Ann Krentz). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So good! This cover is amazing. I loved the mystery and the time period details. The romance seems to be less of a focus in these books, but they‘re still great.

Wow, what a great book! I think so far it‘s my favorite from my #newyearwhodis list by @ElenaBaer just the right blend of mystery and romance with an ending that I actually didn‘t see coming. I‘ll definitely give other Amanda Quick books a try. @monalyisha also, letter O for #LitsyAtoZ @BookishMarginalia

#LitsyWalkers orange travel ban means I‘ll be doing all my walking inside today. Last forecast I saw was for 5-8 inches. We probably won‘t be having our book club author Skype with Wiley Cash tonight. Hopefully we can reschedule. I‘ve got a fun day of doing up and down stairs to do laundry ahead of me since my dog was sick on my bed first thing this morning. 😬 happy reading and stay safe if you‘re in winter storm land!

squirrelbrain At least you‘ve got the laundry to keep you busy! 😬 6y
CocoReads True that. And thankful I have a few days off so that I don‘t have to leave the house today 6y

CocoReads @Kaye it‘s stopped for now, the only plow we‘ve had has been a pickup with a plow attachment, my sister made it to the high school to pick up my niece (because why would you cancel school) and said they didn‘t plow there either. 🙄 hubs just got home so he‘s out snow blowing now. Hopefully I can bust out a little tomorrow even if it‘s just to go to the mall and walk there. 6y

Calling it at just 24 hours. Had I not been awake at 3:30 am, I never would have made it but now, it‘s time for some sweet sweet sleep. Happy #24in48 everyone, whether you made it or not, any amount of reading is a success!

Thanks to #NetGalley and @BerkleyPub for an advanced reader‘s copy of this.

The second in the Burning Cove series, and I liked it. Adelaide Blake is hiding from a troubled past. But, what happens when the past catches up with her? It has romance and suspense, strong female characters, and a setting where it seems everyone has something to hide. Quick writes a storyline that keeps the reader engaged.

This month's @#pagehabit box. I am now up to 3 of these photo holders and 3 pairs of these socks! Lol. The book sounds really great though! Love the handy bookmarks as well!

MallenNC I still haven't even received my July box, and no tracking for the second month in a row. I've seen a lot of complaints from those who have gotten their boxes. I just cancelled, and I don't know if that means I won't get the July box or if they'll start the cancellation with August. Incredibly frustrating. 6y
aprilpohren Yikes @MallenNC !! That's not good! 6y
MallenNC @aprilpohren It's really disappointing! I hope the book you got is good! I like the cover. 6y

An asylum, evil doctors, a new mystery drug, and the woman planning her escape....they all collide in a very satisfying romantic suspense novel. Something at the ending i could have done without but alas.

And, I‘m calling it finished for my #8intwo participation. Hooray!

As for #NetGalleyTBRAttack , I completed one book and started a second. It was a good opportunity to concentrate on even just that small amount. Thanks for hosting, @Clwojick !

This book comes out next week. I read an arc from netgalley a couple of months ago. It's book 2 in Quick's Burning Cove series. I liked the mystery and the characters. The tea stuff was a little too woo for me. I even liked the romance, except for at the end, which I'll explain in the comments under a spoiler tag. I'll probably continue to read the series if it continues.

Amie I didn't like that at the end the romantic relationship had to rush into a marriage proposal, especially when they really barely knew each other. 7y

This was like watching a noir film. The author‘s decription of the setting and the dialog was perfectly done in the pre-war atmosphere. It could have come off as a bit corny to some, but I found it suitable for the time and place. It's a fast read; I wasn't aware that it was part of a series, it was great as a stand alone. I would love to find out what happens next in the little coastal town in California.

I'm trying to cut back on requesting books from netgalley but when the publisher gives me access to a book without having to request it, I can't resist 😀

susanw It‘s the best when that happens! 7y
