Harley Merlin and the Secret Coven
Harley Merlin and the Secret Coven | Bella Forrest
A mature Young Adult fantasy with a twisty, Potter-esque feel -- welcome to the world of Harley Merlin... Being an empath has its advantages. Nineteen-year-old Harley Merlin can sense people's emotions, among other things. It's how she snagged her first job pinpointing cheaters at a casino. But she has no clue where she got these freakish powers because she spent her childhood jumping from home to home in the foster system, and her father left her with nothing more than a cryptic note. Then she crosses paths with a terrifyingly real monster. Which is when a mysterious and annoyingly arrogant young warlock named Wade Crowley steps in, introducing her to a hidden world of magicals and covens riddled with secrets--as well as clues about her murky past. Whether she likes it or not, this new world is where she belongs. But after a disturbing twist of events, Harley quickly realizes that her past is darker than she could ever have imagined. And that someone in the coven is out for her blood. With the help of Wade and her new friends, she must figure out who the traitor is and why they're targeting her... Before the human and magical worlds dangerously collide. Fans of witches and magic, prepare for an enthralling new journey from million-bestselling author Bella Forrest. The setting was interesting and I wished I enjoyed this more as it's a long series but I didn't like any of the characters

Caught up on this one today from #plc a few months ago.
It took a bit of getting into but the second half was better than the first. I like Harley as a charachter and would happily read the next in the series - I‘d like to learn more about some of the side characters.

Had to bail on this one. I think it was mainly due to the narration in the audiobook. I may try back in the future with the physical book.

I feel like I could easily fall in love with a Wizard. I mean its not like it wold be far from just a guy you know? Also the added power/stuff might be fun. Especially if he uses some of these insights to keep me happy :)

I would love to be a Witch!!! All the powers! All of them! Just everything! Also want a familiar :)

My #3Books #IHated choices are not popular opinions. But Harley Merlin & Rules of Magic were BOTH so disappointing. I wanted to love them, but just couldn‘t even muster up some like. And My Husband‘s Wife was poorly executed, anti-climactic plot, and features untrue tropes about people on the Autism Spectrum. Anyone feel similarly about these books or love them & wanna chat?

Beatlefan129 I thought Harley Merlin was truly awful. I hate that it was billed as a comparison to Harry Potter because it definitely was nothing like it. 4y
Ruthiella I was not a fan of My Husband‘s Wife. It felt all too implausible to me. 4y
MoonWitch94 @Beatlefan129 YES! I couldn‘t even get through the first book & bailed. Truly, truly awful. The writing, the plot, the characters! Just yuck! 4y

I finished Harley Merlin. But it wasn't really “romance“ it had some “will they won't they“ moments but it never really got there. But its got a billion of books in the series so I can see where it goes there (also its YA so it won't be super graphic)

Beautiful Creatures? (I mean a caster falls in love) I also want to say we read another one about a witch who had a love interest but I can't think of the name.

So I can see where people had some issues with the wanna-be Harry Potter type vibes but... I enjoyed this one. It was a “fun” story

I had heard quite a lot of negative views about this as when advertised it was being compared to Harry Potter. I am a huge HP fan so I know nothing is even going to compare and it‘s nothing like it. If you read it as it‘s own thing and don‘t compare it‘s a very good read. I throughly enjoyed it and can‘t wait to get stuck into the next one.

So far this is pretty meh. I knew I should have run the other way when I heard it compared to Harry Potter.... because it is so far off that mark it isn‘t even funny.

I love Harry Potter, so hearing this book billed as “for fans of Harry Potter” scared me right from the start.See if this sounds familiar: orphan who doesn‘t know much about their parents finds out they have magical powers and goes to a school for magical people where they have to save the day. The writing is so clunky and awkward, my favorite example: “Her heart thudded like an obese butterfly.” JK Rowling this is not, unfortunately.

DGRachel Oh, that's an unfortunate simile. 😳 5y
wanderinglynn It‘s a red flag to me when they have to put on the cover “million-bestselling author.” Yet I‘ve never heard of this author. 🤔 5y

Entertaining, not particularly originally but engaging enough that I didn‘t mind. A 19 year old protagonist did make me 🙄 a couple of times (guess I‘m getting old) but I like the seeds that have been planted for the coming books - a dark family mystery and mysterious magical talents (really liked that her friends magical abilities are tied to their cultural heritages)

Mehso-so

I read this. I‘ve actually managed to read the first five in some weird hope it would get better but I‘m not sure that it does. It‘s a Harry Potter rip-off in too many ways and I think that prevents it from being its own story and possibly bring good. It‘s on KU so there‘s a fair chance I‘ll finish the series.

Virtually every page had paragraphs of unnecessary exposition bogging it down. I also have to wonder whether the author‘s ever had a conversation with a real person. And for some reason there was a Potter-esque points system, but for adults at a governmental level...?

Still, I give credit for a sort-of-interesting magical system, magical society, and main problem. Overall, this would be a solid first draft for a high school B student.

It was either through Litsy or somewhere else that this was advertised as the Harry Potter for adults. While it‘s more YA than adult and comparing it to Harry Potter is a disservice to HP. However, I loved it and will continue reading the series, because I certainly need more series to start 🤦🏼‍♀️. The magical world that Forrest has built is fantastic and I finished this in a couple of days. Highly recommend!

Okay so this book popped up in my Facebook and is being advertised as the Harry Potter series for adults. Now I‘m intrigued because of course I can‘t pass up a new series like Harry Potter, but I‘m skeptical. Can anyone confirm this for me before I become invested?!?!

PerksOfBeingABookworm My wife is reading this series right now (I haven‘t read it). She said that it‘s not a good comparison to Harry Potter (but, I mean, what would be?), but that it‘s still a good series. The plot seems to be driven by action more than dialogue. She gets sucked in every time she starts the next book. I‘m not sure if that helps or not... 6y
Mrs.C @PerksOfBeingABookworm ahhh yes! That‘s suuuuuper helpful! Thank you! 6y

I really wanted to like this book, but 5 chapters in I couldn't bare it anymore. The author's voice is hard to read, choppy, and dull. I really had a tough time.
