Kira Bennett's earliest memories are of living alone and wild in the woods. She has no idea how long she was on her own or what she had to do to survive, but she remembers the moment that Cady Bennett and one of her search-and-rescue dogs found her. Adopted into the Bennett family, Kira still struggles with human interaction years later, but she excels at the family business: search-and-rescue. Along with Cady's son, Jude, and their neighbor, Free, Kira works alongside Cady to train the world's most elite search-and-rescue dogs. Someday, all three teenagers hope to put their skills to use, finding the lost and bringing them home. But when Cady's estranged father, the enigmatic Bales Bennett, tracks his daughter down and asks for her help in locating a missing childone of several visitors who has disappeared in the Sierra Glades National Park in the past twelve monthsthe teens find themselves on the frontlines sooner than they could have ever expected. As the search through 750,000 acres of unbridled wilderness intensifies, Kira becomes obsessed with finding the missing child. She knows all too well what it's like to be lost in the wilderness, fighting for survival, alone. But this case isn't simple. There is more afoot than a single, missing girl, and Kira's memories threaten to overwhelm her at every turn. As the danger mounts and long-held family secrets come to light, Kira is forced to question everything she thought she knew about her adopted family, her true nature, and her past.

This novel has a young girl who has been kidnapped. Cady Bennett is contacted by her estranged father and asked to bring her search and rescue dogs to the Sierra Glade forest to track this child. Cady‘s son Jude, adopted daughter Kira and their neighbor Free go with their dogs. The three teenagers hope someday they will be working to find people. The book kept my attention and I liked the characters. 4.25/5

What a great book! Fiction about a complicated family and their search and rescue dogs. I normally am not a fan of open endings but it was perfect in this book!

I love The Inheritance Games series, The Naturals series, The Fixer & now this one by Barnes.
An abandoned & rescued girl becomes a Search & Rescue dog trainer & handler. When her family gets called in to search for a missing girl, secrets, grief, & memories all come out.
I inhaled this one. 💙

27/52: The Lovely and the Lost

Very unique story, read it in two days. Kira‘s traumatic past made me cry multiple times.

My first book finished for #AnyWayYouReadathon. Really enjoyed this unique YA book, but that ending kills me! There‘s definitely resolution, but the ending brings up a new mystery and it doesn‘t look like a sequel is planned. 😢 @kimmypete1 @Eggbeater

Eggbeater Nice job 👍 and 😮 on that ending! 3y

Sadly, for this #AnyWayYouReadathon, I'm working the entire weekend. Today is particularly rough, because I work 12 hour days on Fridays and will be pretty busy. I should be able to get some reading done on Sunday though. I'm off Monday and Tuesday, so that's something to look forward to! Hoping to finish the audio for The Lovely and the Lost today and make progress on the eArc of Cackle.
@kimmypete1 @Eggbeater

Eggbeater I'm sorry you have to work all weekend. You still manage to read more than me. I am really excited for Razorblade Tears. 3y
kimmypete1 Boo for working all weekend, but I‘m sure Monday and Tuesday will be amazing for you! 😁 3y

This book drew me in and wouldn't let me go. It had a bit of everything - secrets, suspense, dogs - even some humor for levity. I loved the characters. The plot - a girl who was found feral in the woods when she was young now, as a teenager, trains search & rescue dogs with her adopted family, gets called to help search for a girl who's gone missing - was intensely compelling. As if that wasn't enough, many things are not as they seem.

BookDragonNotWorm On a side note, this is by the author of "The Inheritance Games", though this book is much deeper and more emotional. 4y

I thoroughly enjoyed the search and rescue aspect of this story and the relationships between the teenagers and the dogs. The mystery and the connection to Kira‘s own past made for a fascinating story. I didn‘t quite appreciate the little twist at the end that leaves this book open to a sequel.

gcalabash This book. Looks. Amazing! Love wilderness survival books! 4y
Daisey @gcalabash I really enjoyed it, but it‘s not technically a survival story. It‘s about them searching for a missing girl and also flashbacks as Kira deals with and begins to remember more from her own time surviving in the wilderness as a small girl. (edited) 4y

I read this months ago via #netgalley and now it‘s out in the wild! Here‘s part of my original review:

“As usual, I was immediately sucked right in. JLB knows how to start a book...For me, it slowed a bit in the middle. The conclusion, while satisfying, was a bit rushed and there are some unanswered questions and under-explored resolutions that leave room for a series. I love her writing but this wasn‘t her strongest.”

A great mystery with search-and-rescue dogs and pasts that the characters don‘t want to remember. For my full review https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJHtT2n8FN/?igshid=12bt0ssurhxn8

This was a #netgalley title I‘ve been reading on my kindle at the kids‘ bedtime all week. It was a super quick read and some of it was a little far fetched, but I didn‘t see the surprise twist at the end and generally enjoyed the story. I‘ll definitely pick up the sequel.

I finished my first #readathon book! I was so excited to receive an advanced copy of Jennifer Lynn Barnes‘ new book. I am a huge fan. This book does not disappoint. I loved Kira and her family including the dogs! Jude was absolutely delightful. I like how Barnes always writes about broken people. They are never perfect and often struggling with some really hard stuff. I am hoping this book will turn into a series!

I didn‘t get the little congratulations page when I hit my goal (😢) maybe because GR knew I had revised it down twice. I had originally set my goal for 125 but I was in a bit of a reading funk for a large part of the year. I am very happy with my 97 books and the great books I read toward the end of the year to get me there but I‘m setting it to 125 again for 2019 and hoping I can avoid the book blahs this year!

ElishaLovesBooks That‘s a fabulous number especially with a book funk! 🎉 (edited) 6y

Kodak2057 I did the same thing except I didn‘t reach my goal and it wasn‘t nearly as many as yours lol hoping to shake it off for the new year! 6y
MarriedtoMrT @Kodak2057 Some years are better than others and I‘m hoping for a good year. (Thankfully I was just in a funk not a total slump or that number would‘ve been way lower!) Cheers to you on a new year of reading!🥂 (edited) 6y
Bookwormjillk I was in a reading funk for part of this year too. Here‘s hoping for better reading in 2019. 6y

As usual, I was immediately sucked right in. JLB knows how to start a book. You instantly get a sense of who the characters are and the tone of the story. For me, it slowed a bit in the middle. The conclusion, while satisfying, was a bit rushed and there are some unanswered questions and under-explored resolutions that leave room for a series. I love her writing but this wasn‘t her strongest.

Early Christmas present to me when I was approved for this one on Netgalley! I just love JLB‘s writing. I‘m already sucked in. Now to carve out some reading time. Napping has been trumping reading over the last few days.
