Wow. This book was waaay different than what I was thinking it would be. The pacing took me a while to get used to, but once I got used to it, it was SO GOOD! I want to know everything about Mary Mallon now. How much of this book was fiction? How much was true?? Definitely worth reading!!

With apropos timing, I listened to this historical fiction about Typhoid Mary. How interesting to live in a time when knowledge of asymptomatic carriers was new, and how unfortunate to be the first known one.

This is an interesting take on the life of a woman who caries a disease but was only contagious by her cooking. I can see some parallels between then and now.

Fictionalized story of the Irish immigrant woman, Mary Mallon, who came to be called “Typhoid Mary“ in the early 1900s.

Since we are in an area with a “stay-at-home” order, figured I might as well read this book, a historical novel about Typhoid Mary 😷

I knew next to nothing about Typhoid Mary before starting this historical novel about her and have definitely spent some time on Wikipedia this weekend wanting to learn more. Was Mary a villain or a woman who just made poor decisions? This was a great book about an intriguing person.

#MOvember I know it‘s not a super original choice, but I LOVED this book by Mary Beth Keane. It‘s the story of Typhoid Mary and the outbreak of typhoid #Fever. If you love historical fiction and books set in turn of the century NYC this book was fantastic.

We made it! Some other campers said we made the right call last night, which is good but cut my reading time since we listen to Small Town Murder in the car. Now bring me a beer and nobody talk to me 😂 I have 4 other books and only about 24 hours.

We aborted our camping trip tonight due to crazy storm warnings and tornado watches, we‘ll leave in the morning. I still finished my car book but MacGruber was aggressively protecting Fever. Does she approve of my choice or is she trying to steer me to a different book?

If you have a problem with germs do not read this book. I‘ve been washing my hands non stop since reading it. The story of Typhoid Mary that you don‘t know. Happy reading and the hand sanitizer is in the desk.

I had to keep reminding myself that the ordinary person didn‘t know how disease was spread in the early 1900s as I couldn‘t believe that (this fictional Mary anyway) continued to put others at risk. She was harshly treated though compared to others in the same situation. 4 🌟

Mary Mallon - better know as Typhoid Mary, was she victim or villain? I definitely found myself switching back and forth as this fictionalised account of her life unfolded. Keane blends fact & fiction to create the story of Mary - not the sensationalised court reports, or contemporary newspaper coverage, or indeed the medical journals and scientific write ups that focused on her status as a 'germ carrier' - but the story from Mary's point of view.

I'd heard of Typhoid Mary but didn't know much about the real woman who was a carrier of typhus & spread germs despite having no symptoms. It made me have sympathy for her, during a time when germs weren't well understood and working class women lacked many options, while also having sympathy for those charged with protecting public health. This book makes me want to read some nonfiction about this case. This is another #FreakyFriday pick.

Two books come to mind when I think of #newyork - The Alienist and Fever. This book is a fictionalized account of a woman dubbed Typhoid Mary who was an Irish immigrant that worked as a cook for wealthy New York families. She left a trail of disease and death behind her as she moved from one family to the next. It‘s a fascinating look at the New York health system at the turn of the century. #aprella

I had some company while finishing up this book today. I never felt sympathy for Mary Mallon, aka Typhoid Mary nor for her loser boyfriend Alfred. Mary went through the city spreading Typhoid and leaving bodies in her wake because she was headstrong and stubborn. The city finally isolated her for good after she infected even more people. It's a very interesting look at sanitation practices before people knew to wash their hands to prevent illness

I remember hearing the nickname Typhoid Mary and thinking this was a woman who intentionally infected others. But really, Mary Mallon was a woman trying to make her own way in the world, who may have inadvertently made others sick. This novelization of her life sounds mighty interesting.

I loved learning about Mary Mallon, or Typhoid Mary as she's known in history books. This story was a little bland and rambling but the content was emotionally engaging and brought you to the heart of NYC at the turn of the twentieth century. An engaging read, I would recommend. I'm still on the lookout for a stronger book about Typhoid Mary if anyone knows of one!!

Typhoid Mary, from her perspective. I loved this fiction account - Keane researches newspaper accounts, court testimonies and other sources to bring out Mary's voice. She allows Mary to have a voice, something Mary really didn't have in reality. Yes, this is based on a true story. You'll have sympathy for her, and you'll be angered by her thoughts and actions. But, you have to keep reading; each new page adds a new story element. #35bookparty

Mary Beth Keane's historical novel does a fascinating job of imagining the experience of Typhoid Mary, humanising her as a woman demonised in part for her perceived lack of morals and refusal to kowtow to those in authority but also her obstinacy in the face of reason and the lingering guilt she feels about it.

Next read is based on the true story of Typhoid Mary.

Trying to get my TBR bookcase organized. Yes, I have an entire bookcase dedicated to TBR's. It's a little embarrassing and drives my husband nuts. I only have about 3 more boxes of books to add to it. I did make a major score at my library book sale...47 books for $11.75!! (I have read the Outlander books on the top shelf. Just needed somewhere to put them.). Please tell me I'm not the only one with this problem!?
