Mistress of Mellyn | Victoria Holt
14 posts | 23 read | 6 to read
Mount Mellyn stood as proud and magnificent as she had envisioned...But what bout its master--Connan TreMellyn? Was Martha Leigh's new employer as romantic as his name sounded? As she approached the sprawling mansion towering above the cliffs of Cornwall, an odd chill of apprehension overcame her. TreMellyn's young daugher, Alvean, proved as spoiled and difficult as the three governesses before Martha had discovered. But it was the girl's father whose cool, arrogant demeanor unleashed unfimiliar sensations and turmoil--even as whispers of past tragedy and present danger begin to insinuate themselves into Martha's life. Powerless against her growing desire for the enigmatic Connan, she is drawn deeper into family secrets--as passion overpowers reason, sending her head and heart spinning. But though evil lurks in the shadows, so does love--and the freedom to find a golden promise forever...

I've always been a fan of Jean Plaidy's historical novels but I've not read many that she authored as Victoria Holt. I really enjoyed this gothic romance and murder mystery, even if it did seem to borrow a lot of elements from Jane Eyre and Rebecca.

Librarybelle I really liked this one too, and agree about elements of Jane Eyre and Rebecca! 9mo

Crazeedi I've read many Victoria Holt books, never knew written by Plaidy! And I don't think I read this one!! 9mo

kwmg40 @Librarybelle I suppose many of the gothic romance writers of the 20th century were inspired by Jane Eyre! 9mo
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks Thanks for stopping by! 9mo
kwmg40 @Crazeedi Apparently, Eleanor Alice Burford, a.k.a. Jean Plaidy, wrote under several pseudonyms! I'm familiar with only the Plaidy and Holt ones. 9mo
Librarybelle Probably! Jane Eyre is a good book! 9mo

My first Victoria Holt, with echoes of Jane Eyre in the storyline. Martha Leigh becomes the governess to Connan TreMellyn‘s young daughter Alvean. Alvean‘s mother died under scandalous circumstances, yet there is speculation that she still walks the halls of the manor. I enjoyed this - slight twist at the end, and while listening to this, I did say out loud how “smooth” the guys‘ pickup lines are. I‘d read more! Good to listen to! #192025 #1960

Librarybelle As Martha becomes entangled in the mystery and draws some conclusions, there is a #MethodToTheMadness ….except her method leads her to danger. #Adult #BBRC @LibrarianRyan 11mo
Ruthiella I‘ve never read any Victoria Holt, but I remember seeing her name on books my mother would check out from the library, along with Mary Stewart and Norah Lofts. 11mo
Librarybelle @Ruthiella She has so many! Good romantic/Gothic suspense. 11mo

I‘m on a big gothic romance kick; however, I wasn‘t too impressed. It had the potential to be great but the author fell short on her development of the conflict and storyline.

KathyWheeler My mother and used I to read her books. My first Holt book, and still my favorite, was given to me by my aunt. It was (edited) 3y
Asthecroweflies @KathyWheeler I‘m reading another one of hers right now; it seems to be better than this one so far. 😊 3y

gradcat You‘re very welcome. By the way, I wanted to let you know that things are piling up here, meaning I doubt I will be able to get down to N.O. when you are there. My cousin is going to have her grandkids staying with her (argh 😱) at the time. Also, the docs are going to sentence me to another round of tests (some of which require hospitalization), so I‘m not sure when I‘ll be finished or how I will be feeling. I‘m really sorry—I think you & I ⬇️ 6y
gradcat ⬆️ would be fast friends. 🥰 6y
EadieB @gradcat I think we would hit off very well! Sorry to hear about your possible hospitalization. What kind of tests do you have to have? 6y

gradcat I have to have another colonoscopy + upper & lower GI scans + a CT scan of my stomach. I have to have a specialist x-ray my jaw + I have to have a mammogram and a cystoscope...and THEN: (drumroll, please) we‘re supposed to “take it from there,” according to my docs. It‘s not as bad as it sounds, it‘s just a lot, and a couple of those tests wear me slap out. Sorry! I hate to get into all this, but I just want you to know. I really hate missing you. 6y
EadieB @gradcat I hate colonoscopy. I will probably have another one soon. Sorry you have to go through all that. 6y
gradcat Omigod! Are you like me? I think I‘ve had about 15 of them since I was 15. They were me out! But I can honestly say, they‘ve gotten sooo much better than they used to be...I still hate them, though. I hope you don‘t have any ongoing colon problems. And I hope it won‘t be too yucky for you (ugh!) Anyway, have you been doing okay since Florida? 6y
EadieB @gradcat No I don‘t have any ongoing problems. I‘ve only done the test 2 times but I have to have the test every 5 yrs. I‘ve been trying to catch up my reading as I was not able to read with the baby and visiting with my friend who lives in Ocala. We are going back June 4 to June 9. My daughter have classes again. We are taking train this time. My daughter does not like flying. 6y
gradcat Omigosh! Are you staying in the same (sooo very lovely!) place? 6y
EadieB @gradcat Yes! She just rebooked it! 6y
gradcat Good for you! I showed your pictures to my mother, and I guess now we want to look for houses instead of hotels the next time we go out of town. I don‘t know why, but it never occurred to us before you mentioned it. 6y
EadieB @gradcat I think it‘s common thing to do with the millenniums as my daughter has booked houses for her family and in-laws when they vacation together. 6y

This was a reread, but since the last time I read it was probably 50 years ago, it felt more like reading it for the first time. It has the feel of a classic. I see the roots of so many historical romance/mystery novels I‘ve read since in this book. Definitely worthwhile. Photo isn‘t from Cornwall, the story‘s setting, but the coast near Lynton and Lynmouth.

CaitZ I haven't read Victoria Holt in almost as long. I'll have to give one of her books a read in the new year. Thanks for reminding me of her. 6y
Kaye Our town library used to have all of this author‘s books I think I read them all back in my bellbottom years. ☮️ ✌🏼 (edited) 6y

This oldie but goodie showed up in my Bookbub email today. I‘m sure this was the first Victoria Holt I read, and I think it was when I was in high school. I am not telling how long ago that was😄 I justified buying it as a trip down memory lane.

Chrissyreadit I also loved Victoria Holt in High School- Pride of the Peacock is still my fav. 6y
rubyslippersreads I read all those books at my grandma‘s house. 😊 6y

Look what just came to my desk for consideration. Four ivory matching 1972 Doubleday gothic romances by Victoria Holt. Mint condition. Shall I add them to the library‘s collection? #romance #oldschool #oldcoolbooks #librariansoflitsy

Love Victoria Holt books! I‘ve read them all. Jean Plaidy writes as Victoria Holt and Phillipa Carr. I‘ve read some Philippa Carr books and I look forward to reading Jean Plaidy.

Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s my favourite of her series, I also loved her Georgian series as when I read them I didn‘t know a lot about the era. (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I‘ll have to check out the Georgian series. I‘m thinking of doing a month of just Historical Fiction. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB The rate you read that will be a lot of history! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 15 to 20 Books. I should switch and do mystery/thrillers one month and the next month Historical. 6y
Headinherbooks_27 Love Victoria Holt too! 6y

Mehso-so

I rate it so-so because it‘s too derivative of Jane Eyre and Rebecca to be quite a Pick, but it‘s just the sort of light reading I enjoy, and it was a very absorbing read. I knew who the villain was almost immediately but still had lots of fun. Three and a half stars.

CaitZ Her books were the first "adult" books I read, probably in 8th grade. I'll have to reread them and see if I still like them. 7y
jillrhudy I‘d have eaten them up with a spoon in the eighth grade. 😋 They still work for fun light reading. 7y

My #happyreads are my Victoria Holt books. I have them all and love the earlier gothic type mysteries. Not laugh out loud funny obviously but they take my mind off of the trials of real life.

I saw an article about Gothic romances after I finished re-reading Rebecca and Victoria Holt was mentioned, so I decided to check her out. Only read 2 of her books so far, but this one was my favorite! Kind of Jane Eyre-y but doesn't take itself as seriously. A fun read!

I have eaten her books when I was 10, 11 years old....this must be a reason why I don't like romances anymore, I guess 🤔

acg Victoria Holt was my introduction to ~adult~ novels, too! My first was The Secret Woman. I'm still gothic-loving trash, though 😋 8y
Simona @seekingthespheres I can't remember my first book but I adored them all 😃 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 I listed Bride Of Pendorric as my first one. I still like books with Gothic touches. 😀 8y
