The Book of You: A Novel | Claire Kendal
24 posts | 30 read | 40 to read
A mesmerizing tale of psychological suspense about a woman who must fight to escape an expert manipulator determined to possess her, Claire Kendals debut novel is a sophisticated and disturbing portrait of compulsion, control, and terror that will appeal to fans of Before I Go to Sleep, The Silent Wife, and Into the Darkest Corner. His name is Rafe, and he is everywhere Clarissa turns. At the university where she works. Her favorite sewing shop. The train station. Outside her apartment. His messages choke her voice mail; his gifts litter her mailbox. Since that one regrettable night, his obsession with her has grown, becoming more terrifying with each passing day. And as Rafe has made clear, he will never let her go. Clarissas only escape from this harrowing nightmare is inside a courtroomwhere she is a juror on a trial involving a victim whose experiences eerily parallel her own. There she finds some peace and even makes new friends, including an attractive widower named Robert, whose caring attentions make her feel desired and safe. But as a disturbingly violent crime unfolds in the courtroom, Clarissa realizes that to survive she must expose Rafe herself. Conceiving a plan, she begins collecting the evidence of Rafes madness to use against hima record of terror that will force her to relive every excruciating moment she desperately wants to forget. Proof that will reveal the twisted, macabre fairy tale that Rafe has spun around them . . . with an ending more horrifying than her darkest fears. Masterfully constructed, filled with exquisite tension and a pervasive sense of menace, The Book of You explores the lines between love and compulsion, fantasy and reality, and offers a heart-stopping portrait of a woman determined to survive. Claire Kendals extraordinary debut will haunt readers long after it reaches its terrifying, breathtaking conclusion.

#VolumesAndVocals

My book tour blog review of this book was 9 years ago but I still remember quoting some of the lyrics to #EveryBreathYouTake in it. Definitely a stalker song. 😱

“Imagine that every breath you take, every move you, every step you take, someone is watching you. Not just part of the lyrics in the classic song by The Police, this is the reality for one in six women in the U.S. who have been stalked by someone…”

TheLudicReader I remember enjoying this book. 1y

Overall a good thriller. Kept me turning the pages. Still can‘t decide what I think about the ending though 🤷‍♀️

DebinHawaii I liked this one but I read it several years ago & don‘t quite remember the particulars in the ending. 5y
TrishB @DebinHawaii the new fireman bloke came to the rescue. She killed the stalker. She was then pregnant to fireman but found out he was married and wouldn‘t tell him! I just wanted the stalker dead. 5y
DebinHawaii Ah, that‘s right. Yes, I agree with you! 👍 I looked & I read it in 2014. 5y

Clarissa is being stalked by Rafe, a coworker she had a drunken encounter with & who has become obsessed with her ever since & begins stalking her. Based on advice from the safety pamphlets she has received, she begins documenting the details of her encounters with him in a notebook in order to build a case. #ACaseOfYou

What can I say, this book started strong, but half way through started annoying me, and ended up boring me to no end.

I just wanted to say I started this one today, (I always read two or more books). I am a quarter into it and really enjoying it. Anyone else ventured to reading this one?

An excellent thriller: not thrilled full of murders or hunting them, but one that slowly ennerves you, makes you look over your shoulder to see if someone is not watching you. I thought the way it us written goes very well with the way stalking works, slowly, tedious. It brings the message clearly and made me realize just how horrible stalking must feel . The end was a little bit disappointing, but then again, real life is also like that.

Currently half way through Claire Kendal‘s first novel. Alternating between enjoying this book and annoyance with the main character. 🤦🏽‍♀️

The book of you is incredibly creepy as it focuses on a stalker whose intentions gradually get more and more intense. The pacing keeps you thinking and constantly looking over your shoulder.

I have chosen this for the prompt #Lies as all good psychological thrillers contain several lies (usually from the bad guy/girl to keep police off their tail!) 😉

This book is astounding in its brutality and suspense. While narrated and about Clarissa, this book is deeply about the causality and injustice of violence against women. It's a powerful read although the end isn't as strong as the rest of the novel. #24in48

Clarissa is becoming more and more frightened of her colleague, Rafe. He won't leave her alone and refuses to take no for an answer. He is always there. Being selected for jury service is a relief. The courtroom is a safe haven, a place where Rafe can't be. But as a violent tale of kidnap and abuse unfolds,Clarissa begins to see parallels between her own situation and that of the young woman on the witness stand.

Tough one to review, was totally engrossed up until 80% and then somehow the pace changed, it didn't feel quite so believable and it all felt a bit rushed. It also felt like a non ending. I would read this author again though as the potential is there.

This one has glimmering moments of true genius, as it really encapsulated the fear of being continuously stalked. However, after about a third of the way in the story started to drag, and the minute details of Clarissa's life became excruciatingly boring. The ending felt really rushed and like she was told she'd run out of words, not for me unfortunately.

My last read was a bit depressing so I thought a nice "stalker thriller" might perk me up a bit. ?

BookishFeminist 👍🏼👍🏼 Stalker thrillers are the best for perking me up for some weird reason. 8y
