The House Between Tides
The House Between Tides: A Novel | Sarah Maine
Kate Morton meets Daphne du Maurier in this atmospheric debut novel about a woman who discovers the century-old remains of a murder victim on her familys Scottish estate, plunging her into an investigation of its mysterious former occupants. Following the death of her last living relative, Hetty Deveraux leaves London and her strained relationship behind for Muirlan, her ancestral home in Scotlands Outer Hebrides. She intends to renovate the ruinous house into a hotel, but the shocking discovery of human remains brings her ambitious restoration plans to an abrupt halt before they even begin. Few physical clues are left to identify the body, but one thing is certain: this person did not die a natural death. Hungry for answers, Hetty discovers that Muirlan was once the refuge of her distant relative Theo Blake, the acclaimed painter and naturalist who brought his new bride, Beatrice, there in 1910. Yet ancient gossip and a handful of leads reveal that their marriage was far from perfect; Beatrice eventually vanished from the island, never to return, and Theo withdrew from society, his paintings becoming increasingly dark and disturbing. What happened between them has remained a mystery, but as Hetty listens to the locals and studies the masterful paintings produced by Theo during his short-lived marriage, she uncovers secrets that still reverberate through the small island communityand will lead her to the identity of the long-hidden body.

Today‘s Prompt: MINDFUL

The characters themselves were interesting because of the jobs they had on the estate in 1910 and present-day Hetty who really had no clue how to live in this remote area with peat as the heating source, the constant rain, and having to be MINDFUL of the tides.

LOVED THIS BOOK!!

I loved the idea of this book: a woman inherits an ancestral home in Scotland‘s Outer Hebrides and discovers human bones. Then the book primarily focuses on the historic story, which is primarily pointless melodrama. By the end, I didn‘t care who had died or about the “shocking” revelations. So disappointing.

2nd book I've read by this author. Hetty has inherited an estate in the Outer Hebrides from her last living relative. She has inherited the house where the eccentric painter (and a distant relative) Theo Blake When she arrives to hopefully renovate the house, she finds it crumbling and old bones in a corner of the foundation. The story goes back and forth between 1911 and the present. And Hetty has to decide ⬇️

Crazeedi If she wants to renovate and create a hotel and spa for the elite of London, or if she should preserve the beauty of the untouched land and nature as it has always been. I definitely recommend 4y

Atmospheric story of love and betrayal set in the Scottish islands. Two time period converge & follow the story of Beatrice in 1910 and Hetty in 2010. Hetty has inherited a dilapidated mansion where Beatrice once lived and where a skeleton had just been found & attempts to solve the mystery.

At first the multiple narratives weren't working for me but close to the 80% mark, things really began to click & pick up. The ending definitely made this one a pick from me. I look forward to reading Maine's 'Women of the Dunes' next

Ms.Story Now that you mention it I could see how it might be compared to Morton's writing (I've only read one of her books I think). Maybe try it from the library -- I'm actually hoping I like her other novel a bit more bc I was really unsure about it the first half...but once I wrapped my mind around the characters & times I began to notice some interesting parallels between the plot lines 🙂 (edited) 6y

I have just finished the much feted novel The House Between the Tides by Sarah Maine. It was an interesting story that held my interest. It tells the story of a house and estate on a remote Scottish island and the families living in it and affected by it. However the story did jump back and forth in time and it was confusing to have many characters with similar names. The conclusion was rather predictable.

SilversReviews LOVED this book. 6y

Although I loved the setting and the multiple storylines over time, and it was a good mystery, this book just didn‘t top meh. I think it‘s that the modern storyline was repetitive and predictable, and the character was one dimensional. The back story was way better. Just ok. Read Kate Morton instead.

An atmospheric, slow-burner of a Gothic read full of history, romance, and a mystery that spans several decades. The setting is so beautifully described that I felt myself experiencing the sounds and smells of Scotland‘s Outer Hebrides alongside the protagonist. My only complaint was that I was sometimes confused by all the characters (past and present) and their relationship to each other.
