*SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE*Instant New York Times Bestseller; named a Best Book of 2016 by People, the Washington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle, Refinery29, NPR and LibraryReads."Hilarious and big-hearted, The Nest is a stellar debut." -- People A warm, funny and acutely perceptive debut novel about four adult siblings and the fate of the shared inheritance that has shaped their choices and their lives.Every family has its problems. But even among the most troubled, the Plumb family stands out as spectacularly dysfunctional. Years of simmering tensions finally reach a breaking point on an unseasonably cold afternoon in New York City as Melody, Beatrice, and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, freshly released from rehab. Months earlier, an inebriated Leo got behind the wheel of a car with a nineteen-year-old waitress as his passenger. The ensuing accident has endangered the Plumbs' joint trust fund, "The Nest," which they are months away from finally receiving. Meant by their deceased father to be a modest mid-life supplement, the Plumb siblings have watched The Nest's value soar along with the stock market and have been counting on the money to solve a number of self-inflicted problems. Melody, a wife and mother in an upscale suburb, has an unwieldy mortgage and looming college tuition for her twin teenage daughters. Jack, an antiques dealer, has secretly borrowed against the beach cottage he shares with his husband, Walker, to keep his store open. And Bea, a once-promising short-story writer, just can't seem to finish her overdue novel. Can Leo rescue his siblings and, by extension, the people they love? Or will everyone need to reimagine the futures they've envisioned? Brought together as never before, Leo, Melody, Jack, and Beatrice must grapple with old resentments, present-day truths, and the significant emotional and financial toll of the accident, as well as finally acknowledge the choices they have made in their own lives. This is a story about the power of family, the possibilities of friendship, the ways we depend upon one another and the ways we let one another down. In this tender, entertaining, and deftly written debut, Sweeney brings a remarkable cast of characters to life to illuminate what money does to relationships, what happens to our ambitions over the course of time, and the fraught yet unbreakable ties we share with those we love.

This ARC has been on my TBR shelf for years. It‘s a family drama about 4 siblings who have been waiting for the youngest of them to turn 40 so that they can receive their father‘s inheritance. As the date approaches they find their mother has given most of the money to one of the brothers to bail him out of a sticky situation caused by alcohol and poor decision making.

So much drama, but great flawed characters. I enjoyed this.

AmyG I enjoyed this one, too. But I love dysfunctional family dramas. 4mo
TheLudicReader This has been on my TBR shelf forever, too, but your positive thoughts make me want to get to it a little sooner. Maybe? Who the heck knows. 🤣 4mo

I‘ve seen mixed reviews for this one, but I really enjoyed it! Maybe it‘s because I‘m currently binging Succession 😂 The Plumb family is MUCH less toxic than the Roy family, though 😬 Another #dysfunctionalfamilyfiction win and it‘s my #TBRtarot choice for February (author‘s first name starts with C).

Amor4Libros I really liked this one, too! 😊 10mo

Cynthia D‘Aprix Sweeney excels at describing an upper-class family dynamic intensifying as four entitled brothers and sisters look to claim their rightful inheritance after their brother, Leo, throws their trust fund in jeopardy. Sweeney‘s attention to detail in creating the characters and their personalities is what I appreciated most; however, they were left with open storylines, leaving me wondering if the build-up was worth it.

I haven‘t been in for a while and it‘s because of this book. I started this at least 3 months ago and I couldn‘t get through it . But I was determined not to give up and to put it down. I‘m not a quitter. Wish it was better, characters were left with open story lines, but “oh well”. I can move on now. #donewithit #thenest

Do you remember sending me this book @Cinfhen ? I finally read it and it was great! It‘s about a bunch of fairly well off, dysfunctional siblings, waiting on an inheritance that most of them have a pressing need for due to bad financial and relationship decisions. There are a lot of other more likeable characters in here too which evens things out - almost an assemblage of individuals making decisions that either harm or help others. ⬇️

It was just so so for me. I think I‘m a fan of everything working out, but it just didn‘t nail that for me at the end. Yes, some things were for the better, but it didn‘t feel resolved. It wasn‘t a bail and I enjoyed the storytelling style. I also liked how it was all around this concept of the nest and how it effected the lives and futures of the characters, when it‘s intent was to do the opposite. I just didn‘t love the characters.

CarolynM I didn't like the characters either, but I think I enjoyed the story more because of that - I wasn't hoping for a happy ending for any of them. 3y
Cathythoughts I enjoyed the read. It kept me engaged 3y
SarahBookInterrupted @CarolynM and @Cathythoughts I was mixed with this book. It wasn‘t a bail because the story kept me engaged and the storyline was unique. I also like how it all was intertwined. I think I assumed that the characters would grow on me but they never did. 3y

I‘m fairly convinced that for the most part it does no child or adult any good to know they will be the recipient of significant inheritance. Well, this book, finally read, served to further confirm my opinion.

This one didn‘t quite grab me the way I hoped it would. Privileged New Yorkers find their modest family trust in peril, learn to live a little more in reality, but...do they really learn any life lessons? Maybe? Still recommended for the excellence of the writing. It was on my TBR list as one of @bookriot ‘s Best Books of 2016.

So, so good. This book is a perfect example of why you don‘t count your chickens before they hatch. I honestly wish this book was longer and I could have more insight into some of the characters. I really like how some of the story lines tied together in the end. I will say that the majority of the characters were whinny at some point, so I‘m using this for #wineorwhine for #booked2020. This is also my #doublespin. Two birds, one stone!

Loved this book from the first very long sentence to the last. This is the story of the Plumb adult siblings who are all in great need of the Nest left by their father available on the 40th birthday of the youngest child. Living in NYC is incredibly expensive and each of the 4 need the money desperately. Some great plot twists, great characters, I already miss them.

And the hazards of a book lunch.

myers85 Look on the bright side - it adds character to the book! 5y

Pickpick

I enjoyed getting to know the characters in this book. The Plumb family is flawed and the knowledge of a possible inheritance when the youngest family member turns 40 taints their lives. I was not satisfied with the ending, it left me a bit disappointed. But this book is well written and the character development is impressive.
