Don't Make Me Pull Over!
Don't Make Me Pull Over!: An Informal History of the Family Road Trip | Richard Ratay
10 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
Part pop history and part whimsical memoir in the spirit of National Lampoon's VacationDont Make Me Pull Over! is a nostalgic look at the golden age of family road tripsa halcyon era that culminated in the latter part of the twentieth century, before portable DVD players, iPods, and Google Maps. In the days before cheap air travel, families didnt so much take vacations as survive them. Between home and destination lay thousands of miles and dozens of annoyances, and with his family Richard Ratay experienced all of themfrom being crowded into the backseat with noogie-happy older brothers, to picking out a souvenir only to find that a better one might have been had at the next attraction, to dealing with a dad who didnt believe in bathroom breaks. The birth of America's first interstate highways in the 1950s hit the gas pedal on the road trip phenomenon and families were soon streamingsans seatbelts!to a range of sometimes stirring, sometimes wacky locations. Frequently, what was remembered the longest wasnt Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, or Disney World, but such roadside attractions as The Thing in Texas Canyon, Arizona, or The Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz, California. In this road tourism-crazy era that stretched through the 1970s, national parks attendance swelled to 165 million, and a whopping 2.2 million people visited Gettysburg each year, thirteen times the number of soldiers who fought in the battle. Now, decades later, Ratay offers a paean to what was lost, showing how family togetherness was eventually sacrificed to electronic distractions and the urge to "get there now." In hundreds of amusing ways, he reminds us of what once made the Great American Family Road Trip so great, including twenty-foot land yachts, oasis-like Holiday Inn Holidomes, Smokey"-spotting Fuzzbusters, 28 glorious flavors of Howard Johnsons ice cream, and the thrill of finding a good buddy on the CB radio. A rousing Ratay family ride-along, Dont Make Me Pull Over! reveals how the family road trip came to be, how its evolution mirrored the countrys, and why those magical journeys that once brought families togetherfor better and worsehave largely disappeared.

It‘s a fun nostalgia trip/memoir, and I learned a good bit I didn‘t know. So without further ado, here‘s a photo from one of my numerous road trips. Photo taken today, Pawtucket, RI.

Leftcoastzen I love to take pictures of diners ! 6y
saguarosally @Leftcoastzen I love photographing diners, signs, old gas stations, Brutalist buildings, libraries, and dead leaves. 🤷‍♀️ 6y
Leftcoastzen @saguarosally a righteous calling indeed.I love those things too! 6y

Chelleo I‘d love to visit Portland! I saw a phone book last week ... they keep delivering them for our local community...it goes directly to the recycling bin 6y
CoffeeNBooks I completely forgot about phone books, lol! 🤣 6y
saguarosally @Chelleo Honestly the places I want to go are kind of too weird. 😂 The other issue was new places. Like I want to go to Florida but I‘ve been there. I want to go to Mississippi but again, been there. 6y

saguarosally @CoffeeNBooks We were actually just talking about phone books at work tonight otherwise I also would have forgotten. 6y
ShananigansReads About 10 years ago I was helping my mom clean out boxes from storage and she had phonebooks from 1994 and 1996. I still have no idea why. 6y
saguarosally @Bookjunkie57 That‘s a treasure! 6y

Leftcoastzen They dropped a one on my porch the other day and I saw a 1954 Phoenix phone book in an antique store. 6y
saguarosally @Leftcoastzen 1954, was I in it? 😂 Ok, my parents hadn‘t even met yet in 1954... 6y

Of course I would read about road trips while riding on a train or subway. Whenever I‘m in a city that has a train system I might as well try to experience it. I think I‘ve seen DC, Baltimore, Phoenix, Dallas, Chicago, and Boston transit systems the past few years. I‘ve seen much more by car.

Bookcation74 Is that an empty green line!?!? How rare! 😉 6y

Just a bit of #litsywalkers for lunch. No bingo because I‘m tired of keeping things on topic for Instagram. 😂

@kaye

SconsinBookyBadger Did you see the lost followers panic on IG? Apparently HQ has been cleaning up on spam or inactive accounts. People flipped not realizing what was going on. 6y
saguarosally @AnansiGirl I noticed a few gone but I just figure if you don‘t care about what I post, don‘t follow. 6y
SconsinBookyBadger Same here. People play that ridiculous follow-unfollow game all on their own without IG clean up. 😂 6y

Just more reading as an excuse for #brutalistlibrary postings.

tournevis I actually like brutalist architecture. I'm one of the few. That elevation is quite nice. 6y
saguarosally @tournevis I was having some access issues. You should see the interior signage. Total 1970s time warp. 6y
tournevis @saguarosally I'd love to see. 6y

There is some interesting information in this book, but the nostalgia was too much for me. If you are nostalgic for the 1970s you may like it.

I just read an article about this book. It sounds really interesting. I'm going to have to find out if there is an audio book.

FountainBookstore There is. You can buy it from Libro.fm and support a small bookstore. If you have never tried it before, the first one is free! 6y
