The Suspect
The Suspect | Fiona Barton
The New York Times bestselling author of The Widow and The Child returns with a brand-new novel of twisting psychological suspense. When two British teenage girls go missing in Bangkok following a hostel fire, journalist Kate Waters is sent to follow the story. Despite the circumstances, she's thrilled to go, as her estranged son, Jake, is volunteering at a conservancy project a few hours away and she is desperate for a reunion. When she arrives, she's just one of dozens of journalists vying for interviews with grieving families, and to her shock, the main suspect in the investigation is Jake. Suddenly Kate finds herself struggling to protect her son from the press and the police while trying to figure out if she can even trust him. More determined than ever to find the truth, Kate dives deeper into her exploration of the fire and the missing girls. It's the most personal investigation she's ever worked--but how can she maintain clarity and objectivity when the story is her own flesh and blood?

Book #3 in the series. I read all of these back to back and I think this was my fave. Kept me engrossed all the way through. Not sure if there will be more, but I do think maybe Fiona Barton hasn‘t gotten enough hype.

Reading this as a standalone may have helped in that I had no expectations as to the recurring characters behavior - 2 girls are missing while traveling in Thailand, a reporters son is also “missing“ in that he has not kept in touch consistently with his parents while gone - (more below)

bthegood the story is told from one of the girls, parents, reporter and detectives point of views - I enjoyed that - each section carried the story forward (did not replay the exact scene) - twists in the end - overall a well written, well paced, murder mystery. 2y

A bit late but:
#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView (thanks for the tag)
1. I've read more Post-apocalyptic books -
2. I think Hunger Games and Extinction Trials would fall in this genre - so I'd recommend those since I've read them (Mistborn books are on my TBR and I think these may fall in this category too)

This book is the third in a series. A journalist finds a story about two missing girls found dead in a fire. There is a survivor from the fire and it turns out to be the son of the journalist. Now she needs to find out if he is responsible for murder. It was really interesting. Love Barton‘s writing. Hope there are more to this series.

I was really in the mood for a mystery thriller and this completely satisfied me. It truly was a nonstop ride, with some beautiful sentimental moments.

I love when books get me thinking for days after I read them. This one truly questions the relationship between grown children and their parents. I love that it made me think and completely surprised me with some twists.

Riveting! An absolutely brilliant mystery/crime novel which delves into the seedier side of international travel and the complexities of modern families. I could not put this book down and I enjoyed it far more than the first in the series. I will definitely be reading more from this author.

Overall, I liked this psychological suspense novel. Although it‘s listed as the third book in the Kate Waters series, it can definitely be read as a stand alone. It‘s pretty much what I did. When I started this, I didn‘t know it was part of a series, and I never felt like I was missing anything.

I appreciated the serious questions raised. They had me thinking about the book for days afterward. ⤵️

dylanisreading Despite a few things I didn‘t much like re: problematic stuff, I gave this 3 stars on the blog. 5y
TheAromaofBooks I had mixed feelings about this one, too. It was engaging, but I felt sooo sad when I was done reading it! 5y

Although this is third in a series, it‘s the first one I‘ve read & it works pretty well as a stand-alone. It unfolds from the viewpoints of several characters: the police detective, the journalist, mother of one of the missing girls, & from one of the girls themselves.

It had plenty of twists & turns & I mostly liked the ending. I would definitely read more from this author. 4🌟

I do love Fiona Barton‘s writing and have enjoyed all three books, but I think this one would be my favourite. Great to see this written from the perspective of The Victim, The Mother, The Detective and the Journalist. This book was so difficult to put down and would strongly recommend it. Tension, Suspense, twists. In the main I worked it out but that didn‘t spoil my reading enjoyment. People intent on gap years should read this! Or not! 😱😳

Brewychock48 I agree. I loved the different perspectives, really got to see things through there eyes. This was a thrilling read 6y

This was a wonderful audiobook! I really enjoyed how it switched off between three different narrators to tell the three different POVs (the reporter, the detective, and one of the missing girls). While I can‘t say that any of the twists and turns were huge shockers I did still really enjoy hearing it all unfold! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Two 18yo girls go missing in Thailand. Journalist, Kate Waters, wants to be first to the story but she can‘t help but think of her own son that left home 2 years ago to travel. Barton‘s new book shows that danger can lie closer to home than you might think. I enjoyed Baron‘s other books, The Widow and The Child and Suspect does not disappoint. This book is every mother‘s nightmare. Recommended to those who like psychological suspense with a twist.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fiona Shaw is an author I have really enjoyed reading. I appreciate how she is able to continue using her two main characters, Kate Waters and DI Sparkes, through her books without repeating storylines.
I enjoyed the twists in The Suspect and bringing Kate's son, Jake, into the story gave this an extra level of suspense. However, I did feel that this book was a touch on the long side and that some of the "tracking" could have been edited out.
