The Sandman: The wake
The Sandman: The wake | Neil Gaiman
An occultist attempting to capture Death to bargain for eternal life traps her younger brother, Dream, instead. After his 70 year imprisonment and eventual escape, Dream, a.k.a. The Sandman, goes on a quest for his lost objects of power. Author Neil Gaiman creates an unforgettable tale of the forces that exist beyond life and death by weaving ancient mythology, folklore and fairy tales with his own distinct narrative vision.

"We do what we must, Lucien. Sometimes we can choose the path we follow. Sometimes our choices are made for us. And sometimes we have no choice at all." The thrusts one wasn‘t my favorite. But it really came back with 4.

Gaiman has this gift. He takes a story that is head canon, widely known and accepted and he says, “Okay, but ✨WHAT IF✨” It‘s absolute magic. What if Lucifer said, “Nah, fam, this ain‘t the vibe for me,” and QUIT. Sure, he‘s trying to stick it to Morpheus, but also…he has a point. To use an inhuman vehicle to say something about humanity? Gorgeous.

Season of Mists is all about otherworldly politics, but we also get a hint of Dream beginning to become a more compassionate being.

This was the only one I didn‘t own for some reason, so I bought a used library copy and now I‘m wishing I had them all in the hardcovers in this edition. The paper it‘s printed on is sublime!

In the 4th installment, Lucifer leaves Hell and gives Dream the key. Dream has to figure who to give the key to... there are a lot of candidates! As usual, excellent story and even the creepy story about Charles Rowland. Graphics were okay but the story makes up for the meh illustrations.

10.000 yrs ago, the Sandman sent a woman to hell for all eternity. Now, he think that he might have acted wrong and decides to free her from hell. And that is not as easy as he thought it would be.

Great, as always. Love the decision to torture someone by giving them something that everyone wants and they don‘t. Also, love Nuala and Princess Jemmy.

I think this was the best one so far. The art in the last chapter wasn‘t good (too wispy), but the story was the most cohesive and interesting to me. It also had less disturbing images. It was more about the Endless and gods and angels than about disturbed mortals.

This one was a bit dull to me.
I was expecting this massive blow-up, but got the exact opposite. There's all this tension created that comes to a very unsatisfying conclusion.

It felt like one Issue was created for the tension build-up and the next Issue just brought it all to a chasing unsatisfied halt.

And I'm off to bed ...
Have an early start tomorrow, so however badly I want to continue reading I have to *adult* now.

I knew I wouldn't make it to 24 hours, so I'm very pleased with my 19h16m
I do have to confess that a lot of time went to just staring at the art. ☺️

Thanks @Andrew65 @jb72 @SumisBooks this #24B4Monday was fun!

This volume follows Death as ventures to Hell to redeem himself. Thousands of years ago he sentenced a mortal woman to Hell after she rejected his proposal. I liked but didn‘t love this volume.

Difficult times call for returning to favourite books. I‘m kind of cycling in and out of finding lockdown awful and being ‘it is what it is‘ philosophical about it. Right now it‘s feeling difficult, I had a video catch up with my head of department and it made me remember how much I love and miss my job 😫 I read sandman first when I was about 18 and I was so obsessed with it I‘m racing through them all again now

TheKidUpstairs The cycling emotions are tough. Especially because I find the rough, anxiety filled days seem to pop up out of nowhere. Glad you're finding comfort in old favourites! 4y

All of Neil Gaiman's Sandman books are extraordinary. This one stood out the most to me because of it's definitions of heaven and hell. Gaiman really paints a tale with Lucifer here, as well as Angel's and their real roles. The Angel's lines at the end are truly the best, and I can't wait to finally finish a series I have had on my bucket list for so long!

And here we have book # 4 for #24b4Monday. This was my favorite Sandman yet, as the plot really started to kick off! Loooved the “episode” that took place at the boys‘ school, and also there were some “guest” appearances from the Norse & Egyptian gods!

Andrew65 4 books is great. 👏👏👏 5y
Jess_Franzino @Andrew65 Thanks! I‘m now three books AHEAD for my 2020 Goodreads goal. 11 books so far this month, which feels good since I was in a bit of a “reading slump” from September-December due to travel and then holidays. (edited) 5y

Sandman‘s Season of Mists arc revolves around the Key to Hell which Lucifer hands over to Dream so he can go run a nightclub in L.A. (yep, that Lucifer TV show is based on Sandman and its Lucifer spin-off comic).

Dream doesn‘t want it, but he can‘t let it fall into the wrong hands either.

Graphic novel binge post #1.
Sandman was great as always. Gaiman was really on point by volume 4.
Predator held up better than expected. If they would have followed these storylines, the movie sequels would have been so much better.
Lady Mechanika was really good. The art was fantastic!
Turok was a great reboot of the franchise.
The Wonder Woman Conan series was SO MUCH BETTER than it should have been! I was pleasantly surprised by this.

TieDyeDude I'm so glad people are finding Lady Mechanika! 6y

Morpheus travels to Hell to rescue a woman he condemned there thousands of years ago. He finds that the devil has decided to leave hell, and he leaves the key to hell with Morpheus. The rest of the book is a bunch of entities trying to get the key from Morpheus. Pretty good story line and some interesting new characters.

And there was a time when THIS was my favourite volume. We meet the rest of the active Endless, we wallow in mythology, and we literally go to Hell. It's great.

It's also the book I bought with the Chapters gc my aunt & uncle gave me for my 18th birthday, and I learned stuff about myself while I read it. So there's that, too. #comics
