Year of Marvellous Ways
Year of Marvellous Ways | Sarah Winman
A YEAR OF MARVELLOUS WAYS is the unforgettable and completely captivating new novel from Sarah Winman, author of the international bestseller WHEN GOD WAS A RABBIT. Marvellous Ways is eighty-nine years old and has lived alone in a remote Cornish creek for nearly all her life. Lately she's taken to spending her days sitting on a mooring stone by the river with a telescope. She's waiting for something - she's not sure what, but she'll know it when she sees it. Drake is a young soldier left reeling by the Second World War. When his promise to fulfil a dying man's last wish sees him wash up in Marvellous' creek, broken in body and spirit, the old woman comes to his aid. A YEAR OF MARVELLOUS WAYS is a glorious, life-affirming story about the magic in everyday life and the pull of the sea, the healing powers of storytelling and sloe gin, love and death and how we carry on when grief comes snapping at our heels.

#MarvellousMay #Readathon Check In :

I actually reached and surpassed my goal 😀
I finally finished the #Librarything EarlyReviewer ARC Dark Factory by Kathe Koja (Rather underwhelmed... 😑) - that was my goal.
Started Mine by Rachael Tamayo and finished it in five days AND started my next read The Unreliables.
So - success! 😁

Thank you @Andrew65 - it seems you got me out of my reading slump! 😊🙏

Whilst I liked this book, I didn‘t love it. It wasn‘t exactly fantasy but it was a bit too ethereal for me.

I did enjoy the storyline and didn‘t see the ‘twist‘ coming at the end, but I think I‘d have liked it more without all of the whimsy and ‘magical‘ happenings. (But that‘s the whole point of the book I guess!)

So, still a pick but just not my genre.

#bookspinbonanza number 9

Caroline2 Yeahhh, I‘m not keen whimsical stuff either. I‘m too cynical!! 😆 4y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 4y
TrishB Oh I loved it, must have been in the mood for whimsical at the time, I thought it told the story well. 4y
squirrelbrain A lot of it is what we‘re in ‘the mood‘ for though isn‘t it @trishb ? I‘d have probably loved it on a different day.... 🤷‍♀️😘 4y

Beautiful writing, oodles of atmosphere, gorgeous unexpected storytelling and all the feels!

For whatever reason, tho, I struggled badly to get into it - right book, wrong time? I‘d have liked to spend more time with the later characters too 🥖 ⭐️

Thank you for choosing this one (sorry for holding on to it so long!) @Cathythoughts - it‘ll be in the post to you tomorrow. At some point, we need to ask @jenniferw88 how she chose her name. @jhod

rockpools I‘d planned to have a couple of reading themes this year, one of them being local-to-me books. This would definitely qualify, so as well as being the first book I finish this year, it‘ll also be the first of my #WestcountryReads 5y
Cathythoughts I‘m glad you enjoyed it ! No worries about posting it .... whenever is grand 😘 5y

rockpools @jenniferw88 Now you come to mention it.. yes please! I had an interview at Dorchester library once - fairly sure my lack of Thomas Hardy reading contributed to not getting the job. Any suggestions v welcome! 5y
jenniferw88 @RachelO ok. Couple of questions before i put my thinking cap on! Do you want fiction or non-fiction? And do you want the setting to be in Dorset, the author to be based in Dorset, both of these or a mixture of both? Or are you not fussed? 5y
rockpools @jenniferw88 Aw, thank you! My answer to both is I Don‘t Mind! I normally do geographical challenges by where the author‘s based, but in this one I seem to be going for setting- (I have Welsh, Northern and Unknown authors on my list, along with Agatha) - my plan is to mop up any of the vaguely-local books sitting on my shelves and see what else I‘ve missed. I‘ve probably got 50/50 NF/F on the list so far. 5y

After reading Tin Man I bought both of Winman‘s previous books and finally got around to reading this one. Unfortunately it didn‘t really work for me. The writing is beautiful in places but the story felt convoluted and just never came together for me. #unpopularopinion, I know.

BarbaraBB I felt the same. For me it didn‘t come close to Tin Man! 5y
Kalalalatja Same for me. I also like When God was a Rabbit better than Marvellous 5y

#bfcr3 week 2 update @wanderinglynn @Chrissyreadit . I was expecting injections to fall behind this week as we hosted a party Sunday night & the last guest didn't leave until 11:45 - too late for the injections.

4 1/2 ⭐ for this book - @Cathythoughts I enjoyed this book & definitely keen to read more by this author (luckiky I've got some downloaded on my Kindle!)

@jhod it will be on it's way later this week, along with a birthday present!

jenniferw88 @Chrissyreadit it's lovely, but I don't like the sun and one of my tablets makes me much hotter than everyone else, so I don't sunbathe much. 5y

Sarah Winman speaks of the haunting & evocative feel of the tidal creeks in Cornwall / where the book is mostly set. ( never been .. but want to go now ) The value of storytelling.. the old people in her life. She says : the more I talked to old men who had been in the war , I realized , the more fantastical the stories - the more pain they were hiding ... Loved this one. #LMPBC

TrishB This all comes through in this book ❤️ 5y

Cathythoughts @TrishB makes total sense to me. This was cute, but I couldn‘t really connect to the characters. It felt like Winman was more focused on writing beautiful and poetic sentences, than focused on writing the story. It felt a bit messy to me, and while I loved the themes of grief and story telling, it just wasn‘t enough to make me fall in love with the story.

TrishB Sorry you didn‘t enjoy so much. I loved Marvellous 💕 6y
BarbaraBB Too bad it was disappointing. I have this one waiting for me but don‘t really dare starting it because I am afraid of a similar experience (edited) 6y
Kalalalatja @TrishB @BarbaraBB I really liked Marvellous as a character, it was all the others that felt a bit weird for me, especially some of the later characters that felt like they were just thrown in without much reason. But I‘m crossing my fingers I‘ll feel differently about When God Was a Rabbit 🤞 I‘m in a bit of a slump-ish mood, so that might have an impact on my feelings as well 6y
TrishB @BarbaraBB I loved When God too....sometimes reading at the right time and mood is important too. 6y

Set on the Cornwall coast, post-WW2. Marvellous is 90 yrs young, and living an isolated life. Francis Drake, is a fragile and damaged young soldier, returning from France. #day20 #seasonsreadings2016 #titlesstartingwithxyz This lovely post-war set novel is as heart-warming as it is heart-wrenching. Poetic writing with a touch of the magical, set on the rugged Cornwall coast. Marvelous is 90 years young and quirky as hell. Francis, a fragile young soldier, is returning from France after the war. Their lives cross paths and their friendship heals wounds as they care for each other. A great pick for 'Y'' for #Litsyatoz
