A hora da estrela
A hora da estrela | Clarice Lispector
55 posts | 65 read | 62 to read

For #readingtheamericas2023 I chose this title to represent Brazil. I'm giving it a pick not because I loved the story...but because of how it's sticking with me. This one isn't going to be for everyone. It's a difficult story to describe in such a short amount of words. Very thought provoking. And the ending...sigh! @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Resolving in 2023 to read at least a little bit every day, a habit which I abandoned for much of the last year or more. This bizarre novella was my first foray into Lispector and while I think my younger self would‘ve fallen in love with its seemingly intentional complexity and opacity & struggle with unanswerable questions, I still found much to enjoy here.

Like several others, I read The Hour of the Star for Brazil #FoodAndLit. Such a weird, thought-provoking little story... it made me sad a lot, made me laugh a little, and then that ending! My first Lispector, but I definitely want to read more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #1001books

Then I made Galinhada and Pão de Queijo for dinner tonight. The cheese bread is awesome!

I‘d heard of Clarice Lispector before but never read anything by her. I was blown away by this short book: original, poetic, moving and ironic. It tells the story of Macabea, young woman “incompetent for life.” I‘ll be looking for more by Lispector, and hope you do too! #foodandlit #Brazil

ValerieAndBooks One of your quilts?? Lispector does look interesting! 4y
arubabookwoman @ValerieAndBooks Yes it is. It is a quilt made at the turn of the century-1999-2000. The idea was to include at least 2000 different fabrics in the quilt. This one includes more than 2000 different fabrics (I knew the exact # at one time, it‘s about 2100) in small squares a bit less than 1 inch in size, almost entirely hand pieced. I think I‘ll post a photo of the full quilt. 4y
BarbaraBB I read this one too and have just bought a copy of 4y
Butterfinger I enjoyed the Hour of the Star. 4y

An erratic, philosophical look of a woman who is very awkward in life. It was a quick read. I felt for Macabea. I have been in situations where I just didn't know how to act. But the ending. I have no words. #FoodandLit @Texreader @Catsandbooks #Booked21 -Jewish author @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft

Cinfhen Wow! I had no idea this iconic Brazilian author is Jewish #LiveAndLearn 🤓 (edited) 4y
Butterfinger I didn't either till I read an article. I think it was @4thhouseontheleft who shared it. Her real name was Chaya, which is my daughter's name. She emigrated with her parents from Ukraine, I think it was. In the 30s??? 4y
TheBookHippie I knew she was Jewish not Brazil. Oy .As a result of the anti-Semitic violence they endured, the family fled to Brazil in 1922, and Clarice Lispector grew up in Recife. Following the death of her mother when Clarice was nine, she moved to Rio de Janeiro with her father and two sisters, and she went on to study law. With her husband, who worked for the foreign service, she lived in Italy, Switzerland, England, and the United States. 4y

The translator‘s afterword to this novella includes the statement that “no matter how odd Clarice Lispector‘s prose sounds in translation, it sounds just as unusual in the original.” It was odd, and I don‘t know quite know how to describe it, but it was intriguing.

Supper tonight was delicious spicy Brazilian coconut chicken with rice and vegetables and brigadeiros.

Butterfinger @4thhouseontheleft what about the Cardinal System? I depend on it for 90% of my reads because my little library rarely has what I want. 4y
alisiakae @Butterfinger my library is usually pretty good. What is the cardinal system? 4y
Butterfinger North Carolina has a library system that connects all the libraries. The books you order are then sent to your home library. 4y
alisiakae @Butterfinger is that different than the inter library loan? Do you have a link, I‘ve never heard about that! I think inter library loans are still suspended through my library due to Covid. 4y
Butterfinger Yes. It is the interlibrary. I access it through my home library's website. I have been able to use it in Mcdowell. When I request a book, I scroll to the top of the long list of libraries and Cardinal is there at the top. I assumed that it was open statewide. I apologise. 4y
alisiakae @Butterfinger I used to use ILL more often, but our library added fees a while back, and then Covid hit, and we‘ve had no access since. But I‘m going to ask about Cardinal next time I visit the library! 4y
alisiakae @Butterfinger and just found the website for it, Mecklenburg county isn‘t on the list. Neither is Wake; I guess the larger library branches don‘t participate. 😫 4y

Returned two books to the library this morning in the rain, this short novella being the first which while slight in bulk has, in the character of macabea, bewitched me as she appeared to have done with the narrator rodrigo. Definitely playing with the form of the novel i felt a little bit like the author was toying with my emotions. Definitely a book i will look to buy so i can reread and explore more of the authors work.

Clarice Lispector‘s prose is like nothing else! So much respect for her translators idk how they even try it... this is one of those books where I wasn‘t always completely sure what I was reading, but I got so immersed in her sentences and the ideas I didn‘t care about plot much at all! Lispector and Woolf are the only people who redeem modernism for me.

Reading this novella made me feel like I was in a dream state, not because of the particular story told, but how Lispector chose to tell it. It reminded me more of poetry than prose- only 77 pages, but not a single sentence was wasted. How I obtained it is fitting: I had to climb a ladder, and even then struggled to reach it. For me, those experiences add to the mystique..I could wax on and get really corny, but I'll stop there... Just read it 😋

batsy Lovely review, especially the part about how you got it! I love this book... dream state is accurate. 7y

Billypar @Natasha.C.Barnes Nope- this will be my first. I'd heard of IOAWNAT and Invisible Cities but not Marcovaldo- I'll have to check those out next- thanks for the recs! 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Billypar so I've only read the first bit of IOAWNAT but it's pretty experimental (I like it, but not everyone does), so wanted to let you know that if you hate it, you may still love Marcovaldo--sweet little stories about this Italian family, super funny. 7y
batsy The Hour of the Star is brilliant. Lispector is just on another level. I have an older translation and I think you have the newer one...? I should look it up 😆 7y
batsy Also, I just acquired The Woman in the Dunes and I'll be reading the Achebe this year for litsyclassics 🙂 7y
Leftcoastzen Yay Strand! 7y
Billypar @Natasha.C.Barnes That's good to know- I tend to enjoy experimental stuff, but I appreciate it even more when an author will go experimental for one novel and then still write others that are more character-driven, which sounds true for Marcovaldo. So on that basis Calvino seems to be in my wheelhouse ☺ 7y
Billypar @batsy Oooh....that makes me even more excited for The Hour of the Star. It does say 'new translation by Benjamin Moser' who apparently wrote a biography on Lispector. 7y

Billypar @GatheringBooks Thanks! 😃 7y
Billypar @Iblu Hope so! Though I'll be a poor judge of whether that's the case, except through what others have written on the translation quality. 7y
Iblu Indeed, I think it‘s a tall order to translate Se una notte... it‘s been some years, but I remember the exercises of style spoke really clearly to a student of Italian literature in terms of references... @Leetha_rose It seems you have successfully found the week spots on my bookshelfes. 😂 I think the only Brasilian author I have read so far is Paulo Coelho. So this is a perfect choise for me! 😊 Thank you so much! #SummerSantaGoesPostal

Leetha_rose Yeay! I just bought this copy in Portuguese and am planning to start it soon! I love Clarice Lispector (but have only read some of her short stories)! 7y

Düşünmek sonuç gerektirmez: kendi içinde bir amaç olabilir yalnızca. Ben kelimeler olmadan düşünürüm, hiçbir şey üzerine düşünürüm. Hayatımı altüst eden şey ise yazmak...

Pickpick

This book was more of a prose poem than a novel and if it had been a long book I probably would've gotten extremely frustrated with it. But everything in it was very sharp, and I can't help feeling curious about Lispector's other work.

batsy Lispector 😍 I've only read this (in an older translation) and the short stories... I find her writing fascinating. 7y

Wanted to read a shorter book to gain ground with my "blog reading" but it backfired. I've been stalled at the last few pages of this book because I know I won't have time to review it when I've finished reading it. Gah.

Who hasn't ever wondered: am I a monster or is this what it means to be a person?

Before this typist showed up in my life, I was a man who was even a bit contented, despite my meager success in literature. Things were somehow so good that they could go very bad because fully mature things rot.

Notafraidofwords I read this in college and I still remember it so distinctly. 8y
prowlix @Notafraidofwords her language did take a little getting used to but I'm really liking it. My library has her collected works and I may need to request it soon 8y

I love characters reading books in novels and always try and hunt them down. One crime novel by val macdermid had a hero looking at his deceased dads bookshelf and the subsequent reads i found were great. This was mentioned in the sara baume book i was lauding yesterday and it looks really interesting but its not in library and at 96 pages i think ill be trying to find a 2nd hand version - anyone read it and is it worth the hunt!!!

saresmoore It's new to me, but it sounds amazing! 8y
andrew61 @saresmoore it does look good and at 96 pages wouldn't take long to read. 8y
Lindy Readers I trust swear by Clarice Lispector, but so far I've only read a short piece of her writing in an anthology - enough to understand what the fuss is about. 8y
