This is the first book from Jorge Amado I read, and I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did.

It follows a year in a brazilian city in the cusp of modernity, with a focus on the love story between newly arrived Gabriela and Nacib, which is, honestly, so lovely.

Loved this one 😍 I adored the love story between Gabriela and Nacib and had fun with all the small city politics going around them.

I love getting lost in South America novels. Although this is the first I‘ve read in ages! Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Isabel Allende are two of my favourite authors. I‘ll have to add Jorge Amado to the list. This is a beautifully written novel full of politics, passion, humour and wonderful characters. I really liked it

Hazel2019 I love all the different covers this book has had over time…I looked through all the old reviews 🧡 3y
Eva_B @Hazel2019 Thanks for mentioning that. You‘ve made me have a look too! They‘re great! I bought my edition a few years back from one of my fave bookshops. It has just taken me ages to getting around to reading it. But I am glad I eventually did! 3y

arubabookwoman That was my intro to Latin American literature back in the late 70s/early 80s. I've also read several others by Amado that I liked a lot. 5y

I love Latin American fiction but this didn‘t grab me. Probably my fault for being too distracted to ever give it some time. Vow to try again when I‘m in a better space.

I bought this Blind Date with a Book a couple years ago, but promised myself I wouldn't open it until I could read it. (The wait was extended by moving abroad with only a Kindle.) Now I'm home and my books are unpacked and I have my Lavender & Sage candle, so I'm ready! #blinddatewithabook

Mehso-so

Gabriela is one of the many characters who live in Ilheus, a Brazilian town developing quickly. The men in town are divided regarding the future. Some are very conservative, for others the changes can't go fast enough. When it comes to women however, all men think alike: women must be obedient and faithful.
I even suspect Amado himself of machismo-behaviour: the Gabriela he describes is, imo, not a real woman. She is a man's fantasy. #1001books

SuperPunkNinja @SharonGoforth I think they've made most of his books I to movies in Brazil. Tieta do Agreste is my fave! 8y
SuperPunkNinja @SharonGoforth Oh and Sonia Braga stars in most of them so it's worth it right there. 🤘 8y
SharonGoforth @McShelfington Ah, that makes sense. Are they in English, or at least have subtitles? 8y

My favorite book of all time is written by Brazilian author Jorge Amado. It's about life in Northeastern Brazil as the modern world reaches it. It's also about a free spirit named Gabriela you can't help but fall in love with. 💕💕💕

Gissy Yes! I will read it probably in Spanish! 8y

She loved many things with all her heart: the morning sun before it got too hot; white sand and the sea; …guavas and cherries; …walking through the streets, talking, laughing. Above all, beautiful young men; she loved to lie with them, moaning, kissing, biting, panting, dying and coming back to life

...the Argentine tango. Ah, that den where modesty and propriety disappeared, where, on Saturdays and Sundays, young people of both sexes and even married women would meet and whirl about together, that so-called Progress Club; a better name for it would have been the Hug-and Squeeze Club.
