Shout out to #DinoDana for allowing me to read while the kids learn about dinosaurs.

Echo @EricQiao it‘s actually pretty well done! My kiddos have a pretty expansive knowledge of dinosaurs (for them to only be 3.5) I was glad amazon had a show that they could keep up with easily and also had more info for them. 6y

Written by our fellow litten @EricQiao this is a book about a young man who travels to rural China in hopes of finding out what happened to his sister. He ends up getting entangled in a murder investigation, bribery and corruption. This was extremely eye opening and heartbreaking.

One of the overarching themes in this page-turning mystery by fellow Litten @EricQiao is how our environment influences who we become and the choices we make. What are we willing to do to survive and move forward? And in the effort to change the destiny of another person, what inner resources might we discover in ourselves? I'm about half way through and curious to see how the characters resolve these questions. #China #writersoflitsy

An article today in WAPO is titled “In China and India, there are 70 million more men than women. Here are the consequences.” The consequences, which I‘ve long observed, was fictionalized in my book, The Only Girl in China. While fiction is also meant to be entertaining, one cannot ignore the severity of the underlying issue. The article concluded with women in India taking a stand. Well, China, your turn.

Weaponxgirl That looks really interesting, I read an article a few years ago about how one of the consequences of there being less women in China was that women of a certain class actually ended up with more power as they got to pick from a lot of men who were desperate to get married. They were staying in their own careers longer and experiencing freedom to a level not possible before. 7y
EricQiao @Weaponxgirl That certainly is the case in major cities that offer more opportunities. But China, like America, is huge. The gender ratio gap is more prominent in the rural where late term abortion and female infanticide are practiced and unregulated. In these regions the word “career” isn‘t part of folks‘ vocabulary. Moreover, China distinguishes between rural and city citizenship. Imagine if you‘re from Idaho and can‘t live in NYC. How F‘d up? 7y
Weaponxgirl My iPad just died when I tried to reply 😡 I thought it must be a city thing I just found the article really interesting. That's crazy about the rural and city citizenship! I had no idea. Whenever I learn anything about China I know I'm only just scratching the surface as its a huge country with such a long and complicated history. 7y

I finished this today while sitting at the doctors office. While this was a bit sexist and gory, it was a good solid mystery that I didn't figure out, with a little romance thrown in. It's also set up for a sequel, which I would be happy to read as well! Truly an enjoyable mystery, with lots I didn't know about China. Thanks @EricQiao !

I love a good mystery and the plot in this one was propulsive and original! I read this in one sitting. The dialogue was awkward in places (for example, the main character's habit of saying "for serious" made you take him, well, not so seriously). Overall, a great debut.

I was halfway through this book this morning but I just had to stay up to finish. This was a great debut mystery novel set in rural china. The characters are believable and the story is well paced. I thought I had it all figured out a couple of times but I was mistaken. The twists weren't huge but palatable. I enjoyed this read and recommend it! @EricQiao I'd read the sequel if you write one!!

Overall, this is a solid mystery. Full of unlikeable characters, it is set largely in China, following Ed, who is looking for his lost sister, left behind when he was adopted to the US. He becomes wrapped in a mystery in a small village, which is when the book gets really engaging. I loved the setting and the layers of narrative. The copy editing errors are maddening, but heavily concentrated early in the book, so I would encourage pushing thru.

Cinfhen Nice review 💖 7y
EricQiao @Cinfhen Indeed! @Hooked_on_books Thank you SO MUCH for pushing through! ❣️ 7y

This is a clever mystery full of plot twists, funny moments and interesting characters – I was drawn in from the first page and had a hard time putting it down. @EricQiao created a very vivid atmosphere, I could really see myself in Dayong with Ed and Lorie (except that I'd hate to be in a place where such horrible things happen)! It was also really interesting to read and learn about some of China's darkest issues. A really good read!

I'm so sorry. I really wanted to love this book, but it just isn't for me. I abhor both the main characters and the dialogue is grating on my nerves. There are a significant quantity of proofreading errors that are distracting, as well. I've given the book 150 pages and I dread picking it back up. Almost all the other reviews are very positive, so it must be me, not the book. (More in comments)

DGRachel Eric was kind enough to send me a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, and I will gladly share the book with someone else. If you are interested (again-most everyone else seems to LOVE it) - I'll send it to the first person who comments their interest here (US only, please - postal costs are insane). 7y
TrishB Ahhh...I hate when that happens. Everybook isn't for everyone! 7y
Andrew65 That is what is so great about books, what is not necessarily a good read for one person is not such a great read for another person. Leads to great discussions about books, but sorry you didn't enjoy this one. 7y

Hooked_on_books I'm at page 59 and I completely agree on the copy editing, which is driving me crazy. I can't stand sexist Ed, but I'm hoping he changes his ways as the narrative unravels. I'm not ready to bail, but we'll see. 7y
EricQiao Ah dang, my first bad review! 😅Rachel, it's okay! Reading is a personal journey and everyone's journey ought to be different. I totally understand. I'm just starting out and I'm thankful to anyone willing to just give it a go. Sorry it didn't work out! Really appreciate that you'd pass it along. @DGRachel 7y
EricQiao @Hooked_on_books Others have come to like Ed in the end, so stay hopeful! 😅 As for the copy editing, argh, drove me crazy too. I swear there were things that were perfectly fine in the manuscript but got butchered by the copy editor. 😤 (edited) 7y

Summer break is in full swing here. We spent the morning walking to Starbucks and a local playground, came home and had a picnic in the backyard, and now the girls are playing before nap as I finish up my book. This was a whodunit that takes place in a very rural Chinese village. The setting really made this book a pick for me, as it is not something you frequently come across. The main character was very endearing. Thanks for the ARC @EricQiao
