The Summer of Jordi Perez (And the Best Burger in Los Angeles)
The Summer of Jordi Perez (And the Best Burger in Los Angeles) | Amy Spalding
Seventeen, fashion-obsessed, and gay, Abby Ives has always been content playing the sidekick in other peoples lives. While her friends and sister have plunged headfirst into the world of dating and romances, Abbys been happy to focus on her plus-size style blog and her dreams of taking the fashion industry by storm. When she lands a great internship at her favorite boutique, shes thrilled to take the first step toward her dream career. Then she falls for her fellow intern, Jordi Perez. Hard. And now shes competing against the girl shes kissing to win the coveted paid job at the end of the internship. But really, nothing this summer is going as planned. She also unwittingly becomes friends with Jax, a lacrosseplaying bro-type who wants her help finding the best burger in Los Angeles, and shes struggling to prove to her motherthe citys celebrity health nutthat shes perfectly content with who she is. Just as Abby starts to feel like shes no longer the sidekick in her own life, Jordis photography surprisingly puts her in the spotlight. Instead of feeling like shes landed a starring role, Abby feels betrayed. Can Abby find a way to reconcile her positive yet private sense of self with the image others have of her?

Really great discussion pieces- plus size lgbtq+ representation, first loves, first jobs. Cute, quick, easy read, however a little immature at times.

I just finished listening to another book and this is my review for it. This was the perfect book to read this month and I‘m also counting it for some reading challenges that I‘m participating in this year.

☑️A Book That Discusses Body Positivity - #popsugarreadingchallenge2021

Could there be a better way to start the summer than a queer teen romcom styled book? It hit all of the right notes, and they need to make a Netflix movie stat. #quarantinereads

What a cute feel good story! I really enjoyed Abbys story and her struggles. While the story has some serious topics, the story was very light and easy to read. A very cute YA contemporary romance.

Fun romance that has more going on than the characters sexuality. It took a minute to get going, but then I really got into it. #booked2020 #setinhollywood also for #bbrc- counting for #snowedin #yeahbaby because even though I *could* go out today, I really didn‘t want too - too cold!! It took a good few chapters for me to really get hooked on this one, but what really did it was the characters. The gay stars of the novel are gay, but they each have important things about them and are more than just their sexualities. A sweet romantic story whose shining stars are the well-developed characters you cannot help but fall in love with.

I was a little worried with all the hype, but this was a definite winner for me. As someone who was put on their first diet as an 11 year old I could definitely relate to the skewed self-image, but also my little gay heart was just full of love for Abby and Jordi.

Plus it really made me interested in examining my own personal style.

So cute! 17-year-old Abby is doing a summer fashion internship with the hopes of landing a job in the fall, but things get a bit complicated when she starts crushing on fellow intern Jordi. Recommended this to a coworker who loves#LGBTQ #YA and she started the audiobook at work; ended up racing her to the finish so this review is two #picks in one!

This is a very cute but sometimes boring story with a strong distinct character voice. It's mostly a lesbian romance but also a coming of age (although refreshingly NOT a coming out). The best parts are the protagonist Abby dealing with fatphobia, internalized and from her mom. But I wasn't satisfied with the resolution of that thread or of the other plotlines, which didn't have enough narrative tension to begin with or ended anti-climactically.

The book started off promising, but I found the main conflict to be something hard to care about bc it‘s just a high schooler kind of overreacting about something. But it‘s not bad! You got a plus-size lesbian main character so that‘s fun.

I learned about this book from this week‘s Book Riot podcast with @Liberty and I immediately downloaded it from the library.

This is an adorable LGBTQ romance. I liked that there was a strong theme of friendship. It was a nice change that a male and female could be just friends without it turning into a romance. There was also a theme of accepting yourself and your family just how they are.

An easy summer read as summer comes to a close.

Abby Ives is a fashion obsessed blogger who scores her dream internship at an incredible clothing store, unbeknownst to her she‘ll be sharing the coveted position with Jordi Perez, an amazing photographer.

#24in48 is starting in a few hours, and I can't wait! I have plenty of library books to keep me going, and some e-books checked out as well....plus some books I own and haven't read yet. And some I'm in the middle of, etc. etc. 😜 I don't find a formal TBR that helpful, but I like to have lots of options!

Sace I can't wait either! 6y
2BR02B I really want to do a formal TBR because I deeply enjoy checking items off lists, but I'm way too much of a mood reader. Instead I just have a long list of reading ideas. 6y

🍔 fun and fluffy summer read
🍔 Adorable f/f romance
🍔 MC also develops a sweet new friendship
🍔 Focus on self love/body positivity

If I have one nit to pick, it‘s that Jordi and Abby seem completely disconnected from any larger queer community. I find that a little harder to believe in the age of the internet, but I‘m sure it‘s true for many high schoolers. #queerbooks

This is a really adorable, cute and rainbow colored soap bubble on a sunny summer's day. There is some angst, this is YA after all, both Abby and Jordi grow up all the while falling in love for the first time. I liked the techno, geek, art, fashion angles, kudos to the power of a 1000 to the competence and smart of all characters: Abby, Jordi, the friends, siblings and parents. This hit my competence button so hard. #ya #lgbt

This is the best book right now. Abby is fat and struggles with that but she loves fashion and she has friends that support her. She‘s a lesbian who feels like she‘ll never fall in love but meets Jordi. This is such a high school rom com that John Hughes couldn‘t do any better. I love all the relationships, I love how real the feelings were written, I love how imperfect everybody was, and I love the ending. This book just made me so happy.

Finally got signed up on edel (which, side note, is not as intuitive as I would've hoped) because obviously I need more advanced review copies in my life. The Summer of Jordi Perez is my first edel arc, and it's looking to be a really cute, fat-positive, queer girl romance so obviously I'm here for that!

(My sister's response to my excitement about getting more arcs was basically "Yeah, because you really need more books" but I DO ?)

LauraBeth Of course you DO! We understand! 😀 7y
