She was looking for a place to land. Anna is a fifteen-year-old girl slouching toward adulthood, and she's had it with her life at home. So Anna "borrows" her stepmom's credit card and runs away to Los Angeles, where her half-sister takes her in. But LA isn't quite the glamorous escape Anna had imagined. As Anna spends her days on TV and movie sets, watching Hollywood's D-list at work, she engrosses herself in a project researching the murderous Manson girlsand although the violence in her own life isn't the kind that leaves physical scars, she begins to notice the parallels between herself and the lost girls of LA, and of America, past and present. In Anna's singular voice, we glimpse not only a picture of life on the B-list in LA, but also a clear-eyed reflection on being young, vulnerable, lost, and female in Americain short, on the B-list of life. Alison Umminger writes about girls, sex, violence, and which people society deems worthy of caring about, which ones it doesn't, in a way not often seen in YA fiction.

What I wanted most was to feel that moment when you‘re on a plane and everyone around you is in their own world, anxious to stand up and open the overhead bin and get ready to start the life they‘ve only ever dreamed of, or renter whatever life they left behind: that moment before the plane hits the ground, when the air starts to hum and it seems like if the impact doesn‘t kill you, the possibilities are almost too much to bear.

On to the next. I don‘t have a lot of expectations about this book, haven‘t seen or read much about it. Happened upon it accidentally and took it out on a whim. Here goes.

I really enjoyed this book. It felt different from a lot of YA books. I didn't always love Anna but I really liked her story.

I planned to read all weekend but have spent a lot of time reading the news today. It has broken my heart and I hate the state of my country these days. I am going to try to read a little before bed but my heart is heavy.

Notafraidofwords I haven't been able to stay away from the news. 7y
PatienceFortitude Taking the time to curl up with a book is very good self care.... rest well, and renew your energy to take action 7y
Redwritinghood I've been having the same problem. It's sickening to watch, but I don't want to ignore things either. 7y

I really loved this book. Something about the tone and feeling that it brought up was just perfect for the time I read it. I just love books that are set in LA and deal with the deal with the strange juxtaposition of the city.

Alicia Yay I got this on a kindle deal and also bought the audio. Great review! 8y

I enjoyed this enough. It was a (mostly) light and quick read. Definitely chick lit, but it pushes the boundaries with some pretty dark portions of the story.

As a teen growing up OBSESSED with the Manson murders I was excited to pick this up. However it was less about our protagonists delve into the years old case as it was her exploring her relationship with her mother, her sister and herself. Still an enjoyable read overall. Just not quite what I expected.

This book reminded me of Emma Cline's "The Girls." It's a dark look at LA culture and the need for girls to feel accepted.

My digital library stack. Just finished American Girls, which I enjoyed very much. Between it and The Girls, this feels like my summer of reading about the Manson family.

While this book isn't for readers who crave a strong plot, I liked the drifty feel and LA setting. Anna is young for a YA protagonist and her takeaway of the Manson girls as regular girls who made bad choices is questionable. Overall a book I enjoyed.

I worked in film and live in LA, so I'm pretty suspicious of stories set here. But AMERICAN GIRLS, which is about a girl who researches the Manson girls one summer in Hollywood, surprised me with its darkly humorous, subversive tone. It's not huge on plot, but setting, tone, and writing are stellar.

brendanmleonard Sounds great. 9y
misswendyd @brendanmleonard Definitely different from any other YA story I've read before. I wish the connection between the MC and the Manson girls she was researching were drawn a bit more emphatically, but still--very worthwhile reading. 9y
