Bellewether
Bellewether | Susanna Kearsley
From the bestselling author of A Desperate Fortune and The Firebird, comes an entrancing new novel of love, war, and historical intrigue. Some houses seem to want to hold their secrets. Its 1759 and the world is at war, pulling the North American colonies of Britain and France into the conflict. The times are complicated, as are the loyalties of many New York merchants who have secretly been trading with the French for years, defying Britains colonial laws in a game growing ever more treacherous. When captured French officers are brought to Long Island to be billeted in private homes on their parole of honour, it upends the lives of the Wilde familydeeply involved in the treasonous trade and already divided by war. Lydia Wilde, struggling to keep the peace in her fracturing family following her mothers death, has little time or kindness to spare for her unwanted guests. And Canadian lieutenant Jean-Philippe de Sabran has little desire to be there. But by the wars end theyll both learn love, honour, and duty can form tangled bonds that are not broken easily. Their doomed romance becomes a local legend, told and re-told through the years until the present day, when conflict of a different kind brings Charley Van Hoek to Long Island to be the new curator of the Wilde House Museum. Charley doesnt believe in ghosts. But as she starts to delve into the history of Lydia and her French officer, it becomes clear that the Wilde House holds more than just secrets, and Charley discovers the legend might not have been telling the whole story...or the whole truth.

Starting this one during the #awesomeapril readathon day two! Susanna Kearsley is one of my favorite authors. Her books are all dual timeline with a romantic bent. She is a master at weaving historical and current plots together.

I can‘t wait to see if this one is as good as the rest!

I usually love Kearsley‘s books but this was my least favorite of those I have read so far. Told in two alternating storylines, one about a woman hired to run a soon to be open historic home as a museum and the the other about two of the home previous inhabitants during the Seven Year War, I found myself bored more than once. Neither the history nor the romances had me enthralled.

September #Bookspin complete. I didn‘t think I would like this one as much as I did. My favorite aspect of Kearsley‘s books is the setting, and I didn‘t care to be in this setting. But my mind changed when I began reading. Kearsley does dual timelines so well. I wanted to know how both storylines were going to play out. A perfect fall read.

TheAromaofBooks Despite the fact that it had a lot of elements I don't usually like, I loved this one!! 3y

Spent the week in San Antonio, TX celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary 🎉❤️✨It was a wonderful trip!

This was the book I brought to read on the plane and it was also my April #bookspin choice - Books from Mom category.

A great story following Kearsley‘s typical style which I always enjoy. Probably my second favorite of hers so far. I love the way she combines a modern day story with one in the past and brings them together by the end.

Both categories this month!

#bookspin is the Books from Mom category. My mom has borrowed me lots of books that have been sitting in my shelves so it‘s good I have to get one of them read now. I‘ve chosen the tagged book.

#doublespin is a Middle Grade Book off my son‘s shelves. This one yet to be determined.

I finished both for March but have to post a review for the second one yet. And I‘ll probably do the #bookspinbingo board next weekend

I loved this one!! Generally speaking, two things that turn me off from books are dual timelines and a touch of paranormal, but Kearsley handles these things so well that I devoured every page. Usually dual timelines mean that I am a lot more invested in one story than the other, but here I loved everyone. The gentle connections between the present & the past - the reminder of how people in history were genuine people with complicated layers & ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) motivations - everything was just done so well. I can see some folks complaining that the ending is too tidy, but I LOVE happy endings so I was totally here for it. This was my pick for #Round10 of #LMPBC so hopefully my fellow members enjoy it as much as I did!! Thank you SO MUCH for putting this one on my radar @robinb !! It was a total win.
@hes7 @Readergrrl @cwarnier
4y
erinreads I love dual timelines and happy endings AND I just realized I already own this book, so I‘m moving it to the top of my TBR pile for December! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @erinreads - there were a few things in the modern timeline that I felt like were resolved too easily, but overall I just thoroughly enjoyed this one. It really explored a lot about how all we have from people from the past are bits & pieces, but not the whole story - i.e. the past family rented a slave from another family member, so on paper it looks as though they were pro-slavery, but their actual story was so much more nuanced - the owner ⬇ 4y
See All 13 Comments
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) refused to sell them the slave because he knew they would set her free, so the only way to protect her from him was to continue to “rent“ her annually - just a reminder of however we interpret history, it's always an interpretation because we weren't actually there to understand all the complicated & tangled aspects of everything that was going on. Anyway, hope you enjoy it, too!!! 4y
MittenGirlPeach I loved this book too! I really enjoy Kearsley‘s writing. I read The Winter Sea by her and was hooked. 4y
Kmacwiththepaperback This is in my TBR pile. I have a thing where I don‘t want to read, because then I would have read it and not be able to read it again for a first time. 4y

TheAromaofBooks @Kmacwiththepaperback - I know that feeling!! I have loads of books that were childhood favorites that I would love to be able to read for the first time again, since I don't even REMEMBER the first time! 4y

It‘s official. I‘ve become a Kearsley fan. 😊 This is my second book from her, and I‘ve enjoyed both! One of my favorite things about her method is how much historical research she puts in and real events/people when possible. A dual timeline (also in her book Mariana) centers around a house/museum on Long Island owned by generations of the Wilde family. Their family bonds, struggles, and lessons learned echo the contemporary story. Two lovely 🔻

robinb heroines and heroes who stand by their principles. An interesting and engrossing story. 4.5/5⭐️ #coverlove 💙

A gentle story to relax with. A focus on a time period under represented in literature. The duel timelines helped make the point regarding historical authenticity vs. alternative tellings of facts. Unfortunately, the characters were dry, the romance was underwhelming(the couple couldn't even speak to one another until 3/4ths of the way through), and it got slow in parts that didn't really contribute to the story development.

Started off good then the details going from past to present bogged this story down for me. Charley gets the job of renewing an old house that has a past. Now I remember why I‘ve always enjoyed Kearsley‘s books—sometimes you just want to escape into a historical fiction/romantic suspense book. Modern storyline follows Charlotte, new curator at the Wilde House Museum, as she supervises the renovation of the house & preparations for a new exhibit on Captain Benjamin Wilde‘s life. 18th c. storyline follows a captured French officer & Lydia Wilde. Ghosts, family secrets, history make this a good read.

I suspect this one was added to my TBR after our trip to Canada during the summer as it has to do with a captured French Canadian lieutenant and the daughter of the house who isn‘t too happy to have him there...

We‘ve always had a tradition of the kids opening one present on Christmas Eve but then we‘ve also always been gone on Christmas Eve. This year, we had our family Christmas Eve yesterday and I decided to do the #jolabokaflod thing. But in a twist, my kids bought for me and my husband. Here‘s what I got. Wishing all a fabulous reading holiday!

Another satisfying read by Susanna Kearsley. I do wish we had been able to follow more of Lydia's and Jean-Phillipe's story. For that matter I'd like to see Charley's future as well.

Got this YA title from my library's New Books shelf & stayed up last night to finish it before I had to return it today. Difficult & painful to read but a very good & still hopeful look at a family torn apart in the aftermath of a rape. Explores rape culture & the impact on the rape survivor & her family through the perspectives of Ashley & her brother Derek-whose testimony at his football teammate's trial helps lessen his sentence. Powerful.💜

Cinfhen Sounds difficult to read 😔 6y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen Difficult but good. 😢 6y

I can‘t wait to read New York Times bestselling author Suzanna Kearsley‘s new book, Bellewether. I was lucky enough to be given a copy by her publisher, which she signed for me at her author Q&A in London, before the Romantic Novelists‘ Association Winter Party. The cover is stunning and the blurb is so intriguing. She‘s such an inspiring lady. I have a kindle full of her other books. #Littens #Books #Bellewether #RNA #RomanticNovelistsAssociation

A snowy morning to finish out this gem!!! Sweet story with a dual time line, a little mystery and intrigue, and romance. She is definitely one of my must read authors!!! 💜💜💜

robinb This one‘s on my TBR! 6y
Booknerd2 @robinb I really enjoyed it but I seem to like her earlier ones better. 6y
robinb @Booknerd2 I‘m a little embarrassed to say I‘ve never read her. Do you recommend starting with any particular book? 6y

JamieArc She‘s one of my favorites as well! I love the atmosphere and setting in her stories. 6y
Booknerd2 @JamieArc I agree. Just those little hints of a ghost story is what I love. 6y
