From the book:
“Miss Kopp is the best police officer and detective in the State of New Jersey. She does not know the meaning of fear and with her bravery she also uses brains.” —Sheriff Heath, quoted in the New York Herald, April 11, 1916

This the fourth in the series of feminist crime novels set in the early 1900s.

EvieBee This is a series I faithfully buy copies of but still haven‘t read. This is a good push for me. 🙂 3y

I continue to love Constance Kopp. Her passion for saving people really connected for me & it made me happy by revealing how much she's grown & the support system of determined women she's developed. Surprisingly, I also really enjoyed Fleurette. Norma remains the thorn in my side, but she started grew on me at the end. I admit, this didn't leave me w/the usual Kopp sisters feeling of delight, but I know you can't keep those Kopps down for long.

Some unexpected political resonances toward the end! Another great entry in this series that always manages to handle the history just right, while the historical reality prevents it settling in to a cozy repetitive detective novel rut. The next one (there must be a next one) will have to be right on my academic patch and I look forward to reading it!

AmyStewart The next one is coming in September! And yes, there are definitely elements that are a little...familiar. 6y

Another charming page-turner from @AmyStewart ! No spoilers, but such a fun battle to the finish. Her story feels like journeys I've taken in my life - coming back to myself again after I disappeared. Quite a wonderful read.

Some days I am ready to bury my phone and computer in the back yard and entirely rely upon pens and paper. But then there are days like today when I can use my phone to VPN into work on my laptop in order to finish a project in my car while I wait for my kids and listen to an audiobook. Then I feel pretty clever.

PS the Constance Kopp books are pretty good on audio.

The sisters Kopp are back for adventure and intrigue. In rapid succession, Constance, deputy sheriff, nabs a crook, saves a runaway, and delves into a mystery at the insane asylum for women. Meanwhile, one sister has developed a master plan to help the US win a war it hasn't entered, and the other is determined to entertain the troops. Stewart takes real characters and events, then she adds the ultimate extra spin: her imagination. Excellent!

Miss Kopp is enjoying her fulfilling job as deputy sheriff of Hackensack Jail when her world is upended by an order to transport an apparently sane woman to the insane asylum and by the upcoming election, which will replace her beloved boss—whose term is up—with a new sheriff. As always with this series, great characters and descriptions bring early-1900s NJ to life. Also I love Miss Kopp‘s pluck and persistence in championing women.

Quirkybookworm I have the book. I need to get started on it! 6y

I haven't read the first three books of this series, but l still appreciated this one, which us kind of self-contained.
Stewart has a fantastic handle of the time periode and of the many historical characters of the story.
i found the actual plot a bit meandering, but l still enjoyed it.

The latest book, Miss Kopp Just Won‘t Quit is stellar. I love the mix of true history with some fictionalization of events that help fill in the details. I stayed up late to finish it because I had to know how it all wrapped up. The cliffhanger for #5 is there at the end and I‘m eager to see what choices Miss Kopp makes next. Against the backdrop of sexism and partisan politics, she‘s the kind of tough courage I need more of right now.

I love how she knows she‘s looked at funny and talked about because she‘s going against the grain, but she doesn‘t give a damn about it. She is just enjoying what she does and not worrying about what anybody else says or thinks. To her it‘s just a matter of fact thing. #LadyCop #DeputyKopp

What are your thoughts? Have you read any of them?

Lcsmcat I loved Bless Me Ultima. I didn‘t think Zorro was Allende‘s best, but you might think differently. Those are the only ones I‘ve read from your stack. 6y
Peddler410 Just curious....do you like to own your books in hard cover, paperback, or doesn‘t matter? For me....it sometimes depends on cover art 😊 6y
TheBookAddict @Peddler410 it really does depend on the cover art and if it‘s a favorite. I believe I own more paperbacks than hardcovers, but it‘s because they are less expensive. My HP collection is all hardcover because it‘s favorite and this series is a favorite too, so I feel like it‘s worth the extra money since I‘ll probably read them more often. 6y
TheBookAddict @Lcsmcat Bless Me, Ultima is one that I hadn‘t heard about until I watched the 1st episode of The Great American Read and I just couldn‘t resist getting it. A couple of years ago I read my first book by Allende and since then I‘ve been on a mission to read all of her books. I‘ve been reading 1 or 2 per year. I‘ll let you know how it goes. 🙂 6y
