"This is brave, bold, crazy storytelling at the edge and doesn't read like anything else I've seen up or down the pike. I don't even know where she gets these ideas, but I hope she keeps getting them and writing the stories that result."--Chuck Wendig, New York Times bestselling author of Aftermath

There were moments I came close to giving up. If I had a trigger, it would be nuclear or radiation and there was a nuclear reactor that played a huge part in the futuristic story. A lot of stuff was happening. Sex workers were being killed in very gruesome ways and even Whitechapel made a visit in an immersion booth (that was pretty cool). If you like AI stories, you may like this one. It was not boring in the least, but I just can't pick it.

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 4y

I finished this #LMPBC #groupw book last night. I spent a fair amount of time confused but once I got into it, I really enjoyed it! @phatsallylee @Victoriahoperose @Kappadeemom I‘m planning to get this in the mail soon. I have not figured out how to set up the postage online so I may end up at the post office. 😷

BookishBelle @Kappadeemom I put this in the mail for you today. It should be there by Saturday. 5y

Graphic Novel Week! I read Volume 2 to 6 of Paper Girls. It was my series for the month and I was determined to get it done. I read Giant Days Volume 12. Caught up in that series for now! Then, I read Lumberjanes Volume 1 to 3.

The only novel I finished was Company Town.

I am currently reading A Lesson in Secrets and Starsight (audio).

#weekendreads @rachelsbrittain

1. Starsight by Brandon Sanderson (audio), Company Town by Madeline Ashby, and Lesson in Secrets by Jacqueline Winspear.
2. The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep. But the Paper Girls series by Brian K. Vaughan is also a great series overall.
3. Beat up books. I do buy used so it happens, but I try not to crack my spines or bend pages. Sometimes books come in the mail already bent and it drives me nuts.

I picked Company Town in Bookopoly. I need to finish A Lesson in Secrets. I have Volume 12 of Giant Days. And, I want to finish my read through of Paper Girls.

On the audio front, I have Starsight by Brandon Sanderson loaded and ready.

For the second time this weekend, I feel very WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED IN THE FINAL SECTION OF THE BOOK? What? The? Hell? Happened? How was *that* the bad guy? How did [people] survive [thing]? What the hell with the elevator shaft? WHAT THE HELL WITH THE WHITE ROOM? Was this all a dream? This is WILD. But good! But I am really glad we‘ve got a book group session so I can talk about it with other people.

suzisteffen Also this book is dedicated to the missing and murdered Indigenous women of Canada, and it touches on serial murders of sex workers - important topics but ones I feel the book ends up giving short shrift to in the end. 6y

Starting this one for my #sciencefiction book group. Dystopian future where towns are owned by, uh, companies (this town is a former oil rig, and the company is building a nuclear reactor beneath it, and that is most of the plot info I have so far). Protagonist is a kickass young woman with a birth defect, an attitude, and a lot of street smarts.

5 ⭐️s! I really enjoyed this book! I loved the protagonist and the setting and the author‘s idea of a bioengineered future. Reading it has made me want to read more science fiction. Would definitely recommend! #january2019 #canadareads #readthenorth

I was sold on this book yesterday saving the last part, November, for today. And unfortunately the spell was broken. The tie together is neat but a bit too neat without any previous threads to provide clues to the mystery that is built. Ashby brings in too much, too late- inter-dimensionality is just over the top and unnecessary. That said this is almost a “pick”, but, and I rarely believe this about a book, it could have used more story.

Lightyear, by Didrik Hallstrøm is a short piece of #scifi touching on climate change, interstellar travel and mental health. It isn't perfect, and I have questions, but it's by far the best Norwegian-language sci-fi I've read in a long time.

(How do I add books that aren't in the database? Added another book to post this.)

panoramix Asked the librarians nicely to add it. 7y

This book hooked me from the start. Hwa works as a bodyguard in a town that has just come under new ownership. She is one of the few residents without augmentation, a fact that leads to a job opportunity with the new owners. This dark, fascinating story took twists and turns I did not see coming, and I will be thinking about that wild conclusion for a long time.

In honor of Canada Day Saturday and thanks to @Jenshootsweddings , I read this gem. Picked as one of Canada Reads, this is one to not judge a book by its cover. This is about espionage, murder, fighting, and a plot to kill a wealthy heir. In a world filled with augmented people, Hwa is unique because she has no augs. What a great action filled book. I liked it better than this year's CR winner- Fifteen Dogs

NerdyRev Happy Canada Day, BTW! 7y

A finalist for Canada Reads, this book set in a world of enhancements and body modifications follows Hwa, a young woman with an ugly birthmark and no enhancements, who makes her living as a bodyguard to sex workers. When she's hired to protect the heir of the family who owns the town she lives in, sex workers start dying. A great SF murder mystery.

I REALLY wanted to be able to give this book a pick. I loved the first 3/4 of the book. But then it kind of went off the rails for me. I found myself dissatisfied with the ending, a rather deus-ex-machina-esque conclusion to what had been an interesting story. I think it deserved more. 😔

JazzFeathers I completely agree. Didn't like the end at all. Too perfect and clean. I also found te events leasing to the ending to be kind of illogical 8y

So Madeline Ashby is a Canadian writer and futurist. I don't know what being a career futurist entails exactly, but there were a lot of really interesting ideas in this science fiction/mystery. Nano-machines and programmable tissue...There was also a bad-ass female protagonist. As a mystery, however, not so much. So many loose ends and red herrings and a beyond-implausible ending. #sciencefiction #canadianauthors #yourmysteryneedswork
