I Was Here
I Was Here | Gayle Forman
Cody and Meg were inseparable...Until they werent. When her best friend, Meg, drinks a bottle of industrial-strength cleaner alone in a motel room, Cody is understandably shocked and devastated. She and Meg shared everythingso how was there no warning? But when Cody travels to Megs college town to pack up the belongings left behind, she discovers that theres a lot that Meg never told her. About her old roommates, the sort of people Cody never would have met in her dead-end small town in Washington. About Ben McAllister, the boy with a guitar and a sneer, and some secrets of his own. And about an encrypted computer file that Cody cant openuntil she does, and suddenly everything Cody thought she knew about her best friends death gets thrown into question."I Was Here is a pitch-perfect blend of mystery, tragedy, and romance. Gayle Forman has given us an unflinchingly honest portrait of the bravery that it takes to live after devastating loss."Stephen Chbosky, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling The Perks of Being a Wallflower

This was a book that kept me up way later than I needed to be up reading. I loved it so much! Bree is a fierce protagonist, and I loved all the supporting cast too. The magic system was interesting, and the story kept me guessing. I‘m really looking forward to the sequel!

In trying to read down my TBR stacks this year, I‘ve found that I am drawn to books with dark themes when I go shopping!

This one is about a teen whose best friend died of suicide. She searches for a reason, because she didn‘t see it coming at all.

Although it‘s grief filled and immensely sad, there are happy moments and characters I really loved in here. And it made me think, offering some new perspectives.

Really good epilogue with 🔽

Soubhiville an explanation of the story the book was inspired by, as well as info for hotlines and other supports for those who might need it. 4y

I love this author and all of her books. This one definitely did not disappoint! I love how it talks about a real issue and how it affects those close to the person who committed suicide. This book is one that I will read again! #iwashere

I laughed, I cried, and finished the book in 3 hours. Because it's very very difficult to put down.
AT times I was literally, physically scared.
Personally, I loved it.

Just finished this and it was a pretty quick read for. The subject matter isn‘t quite as pretty. This deals with the suicide of a young woman and the effect it had on her best friend. I found it to ok but something about the story just felt like there could have been more about the girl and less of the romance that was in the book.

This was my first book from Gayle Forman and I am now wondering why I waited so long. I really enjoyed this book. I‘ve read others about depression and suicide and hated them because of how unrealistic they were. I Was Here is the total opposite. It‘s realistic, moving and handles suicide in a very sensitive manner. I love how it tackled how the people left behind deal with the upset, grief and guilt. I really enjoyed this beautifully moving tale.

#currentlyreading I Was Here by Gayle Forman. This is my first Gayle Forman book and I am enjoying it so far. It‘s such a realistic look at the after-effects of a suicide and what it puts the people left through. I usually dislike books about this subject matter as I find them unrealistic but I‘m finding this one very realistic. So far so good.

I woke to three books in progress. A successful Sunday finishing all three before bedtime. A new week should always start with a trip to the library.

Far from my favorite Gayle Forman

"I Was Here" is a very poignant story about friendship, depression, suicide, and the journey to understanding, coping, healing and moving on while never romanticizing any of it.

"There are so many ways to live, to define what living means for you and you alone."

I had really high hopes for this book after having loved If I Stay and Where She Went by Gayle Forman but was left feeling really underwhelmed.

I found the book slow to start and at times I struggled to remain engage. About halfway though the story picked up but I found the ending very underwhelming. I was waiting for some twist or something to tie the story together but nothing - a missed opportunity in my opinion

3⭐️ The story is about suicide, a difficult topic to read about, probably hard to write about as well. I really appreciate the Forman‘s authors note at the end of the of the book. It relayed while this was the work of fiction, it was inspired by what had happen to Susie Gonzales a 19-year-old suffering from depression. I live in a region where teen suicide is an epidemic. I've known so many people who have committed suicide, and we are always left with the question, "WHY?" This book was an interesting take from the perspective of the surviving best friend, and Cody's anger really resonated. A tough read, it dredged up a lot of feelings, but I'm glad that I powered through.

litmuggle I had no clue it was such a problem there, I'm really glad you shared that bit of info. It just shows that no matter where your at we all still need help sometimes. 7y

I keep reading her stuff, and it keeps missing the mark for me. That said, compelling story. I'm giving it a "pick" because I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who is a Forman fan.

BornReadChicago Didn't live this one, but I love her saccharine Just One Day series 😊 7y

This was a book that stayed with me in ways I didn't expect. "I was here" has always been a tough concept for me, do we matter, do we ever do "enough"? But the bottom line is that everyone leaves a mark in some way or another, everyone was, in fact, here.

Flew through this one!
This book was all at once compelling, depressing, sad, weird, and just a teeny bit hopeful. I liked the depiction of Cody and her sad little town and her sad little life, which has just hit rock bottom when Meg commits suicide. I would have liked more development from the side characters. Ben I'm not so sure about. The ending felt abrupt. 6/10 ⭐️

This is the czech cover for I Was Here by Gayle Forman! I really enjoyed it, but the reason why I give it 4 stars is that it was just too fast for me in some ways. But I absolutely love books about mental illness. It always make you feel differently... I still recommend this book for everybody!

I'm only sixty-five pages into "I Was Here", but I have really enjoyed it so far! ? Parts of the novel are somewhat awkward - including the development of main character, Cody - but the story is otherwise alluring and beautiful!

I'm in #readers #withdrawal now, after finishing this awesome book. It's still all I can think about, but it discussed the very sad & serious topic of #suicide. I loved #Cody's #character and her #strength that she only found during her #journey. #depression is very serious & should absolutely be treated like the #illness it is, with no #fear of the #stigma that's usually attached to it.

This book was SO GOOD. I could NOT put it down, literally. I switched between reading & listening & finished it in 2 days between working full time & a 30 min (1 way) commute. The characters felt so real, & their reactions felt so honest; these people nearly became real to me!
