Down Girl
Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny | Kate Manne
Misogyny is a hot topic, yet it's often misunderstood. What is misogyny, exactly? Who deserves to be called a misogynist? How does misogyny contrast with sexism, and why is it prone to persist --or increase-- even when sexist gender roles are waning? This book is an exploration of misogyny in public life and politics, by the moral philosopher and writer Kate Manne. It argues that misogyny should not be understood primarily in terms of the hatred or hostility some men feel toward all or most women. Rather, it's primarily about controlling, policing, punishing, and exiling the "bad" women who challenge male dominance. And it's compatible with rewarding "the good ones," and singling out other women to serve as warnings to those who are out of order. It's also common for women to serve as scapegoats, be burned as witches, and treated as pariahs. Manne examines recent and current events such as the Isla Vista killings by Elliot Rodger, the case of the convicted serial rapist Daniel Holtzclaw, who preyed on African-American women as a police officer in Oklahoma City, Rush Limbaugh's diatribe against Sandra Fluke, and the "misogyny speech" of Julia Gillard, then Prime Minister of Australia, which went viral on YouTube. The book shows how these events, among others, set the stage for the 2016 US presidential election. Not only was the misogyny leveled against Hillary Clinton predictable in both quantity and quality, Manne argues it was predictable that many people would be prepared to forgive and forget regarding Donald Trump's history of sexual assault and harassment. For this, Manne argues, is misogyny's oft-overlooked and equally pernicious underbelly: exonerating or showing "himpathy" for the comparatively privileged men who dominate, threaten, and silence women.

Great book! Definitely recommend it for everyone to read. Well researched and very academic treatise on misogyny. Kate Manne does a great job of dissecting the roots and logic of misogyny and presenting it to the reader in a well organized manor with lots of citations and references for further reading.

#FebruaryFeels #SpinePoem1

I couldn‘t get to this yesterday, so here is a #librarybook spine poem, made from my library checkouts, #ARCs given to me by my favorite librarian & library bookstore purchases:

Down girl!
Outspoken, then she was gone.
How quickly she disappears.
Pretty things,
girls burn brighter before and after
the great alone.

(I have never claimed to be a poet!) 😉

I feel so very accomplished to have finished this book! It took me a while! This is a philosophical look at identifying and defining misogyny. Yes, it is dense because it has so many footnotes and references, and they were all worth it. What a thorough look at a complex yet ubiquitous problem. In a nutshell, misogyny is when women are punished or thought lesser for stepping out of their prescribed social norms.
Thanks again, #NforNonfiction group!

A challenging read at times, with both deep analytical analysis & a tough subject matter, dissecting what is going on behind the scenes in our society and identifying the core of “toxic masculinity”. In less than 451 words, they feel entitled to women‘s emotional/moral work due to the patriarchal system & history of our society & when they feel we renege, that‘s when they feel justified to punish (demean, guilt-trip, gaslight, etc). A Must Read!

Just getting into this one, and it‘s going to be so good. It‘s a way I haven‘t looked at it before, but resonates so much right now. Mens anger because they feel they are entitled to our emotional & moral work (attention, empathy, care, consideration) & when they don‘t get it or feel we dispense it incorrectly, well that‘s when they feel justified to demean, guilt-trip, gaslight, etc as punishment. No wonder we all strive to be “the good girl”!

Finished this over lunch today; will drop it in the mail tomorrow. What a powerful read. My only complaint is that it‘s such a dense read - which I loved (I enjoyed the depth of the near-academic format) but there are a number of people I know would enjoy the themes and concepts but that would find the format inaccessible. @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage @tjwill #NForNonfictionRidesAgain

I can‘t really say much in 400 characters. A fantastic look at the topic and VERY challenging to me, as a white, cisgender het man, and part of what the author believes is the main cause of misogyny in the west. The most important thing here is that the focus is clearly (and rightly) on the victims. I‘d have liked to have come away with something to act on or maybe do differently but apart from that, it was brilliant!

BarbaraTheBibliophage Good review! I think our call to action is talking about the book and getting people to read it. 6y

I used up the ink of 2 pens underlining in this book. I could have done more—it‘s deep and full of unique insight. It‘s 800 pages of intelligence crammed into just over 300 pages of print. Not an easy read, Manne ranges from sexism to humanism and from victim blaming to exonerating men. All the relevant ground is covered. It‘s a definitive work on the topic. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So I started this at work today, having finished my latest audio feast. In the spirit of genuine desire to learn more and understand the authors position, how does someone even begin to wrestle with misogyny when the foundation is immediately undermined by an affirmation of human genders being non-binary? Surely that would change the very definition of the problem from being Male oppression of women to something far more specific? Help please!

BarbaraTheBibliophage I hope you‘ll keep at it. To my mind, she does explain how these two concepts (misogyny and non-binary) aren‘t mutually exclusive. But her focus really is on the way patriarchy and sexism create a societal atmosphere of misogyny. That affects pretty much anyone who isn‘t male, hetero and cis gendered. 6y
Martyn_J_Pass @BarbaraTheBibliophage Oh I‘ll definitely be sticking with it, i love the style and content too much to abandon it! I just needed some clarification and you‘re absolutely right, it came in the next chapter. To understand misogyny as something that isn‘t necessarily male dominated but calls us to shift the focus rightfully onto the victims - namely women as a whole, is an important distinction to make. 6y

When competent women are considered vs equally competent men, it matters how people perceive the state of their world. If they think the world is in a bad place, they are more likely to choose a man. This does not bode well for 2020 candidates like Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris.

Interestingly, she footnotes that this doesn‘t apply the same way to positions like the Senate. Which could explain the 2018 midterm results.

Usually we talk about misogyny as “men who hate women.” This suggests we switch our focus to the hostility women face in the world, which may come from individuals or may be societal. Or both.

The university‘s women‘s studies program is hosting a book club reading of this book. I decided to join because the idea of this book is just so interesting. Manne tackles topics such as distinguishing misogyny from sexism, the backlash against “bad women” and the rewarding of “good women,” and arguing that misogyny is about policing and controlling women. I‘ll keep you posted as I read through this tough, but necessary, book! ✊🏼

PerksOfBeingABookworm Manne also discusses current events, including the 2016 election, and discusses her term “himpathy.” Himapthy refers to the narrative and public reaction that describes perpetrators of harassment and violence against women as the “real” victims. (edited) 6y
