Actively trying to post in a more timely fashion what I‘m reading 🙈
I loved this book- I love tana french‘s writing- she really just places you right into the environment of a story, and it stays with me. I‘m so glad I haven‘t read through all of her dublin series so I still have them to look forward to. Am also very much looking forward to her newest release coming in March.
The best crime novel I‘ve read this year. The Likeness gives The Secret History vibes mixed with excellent, Irish procedural crime storytelling. Although the premise is a bit wild, once you suspend this disbelief you‘re in for a richly characterised, complexly plotted, well-paced, gritty novel. I loved and luxuriated in every minute of reading this. Can‘t wait to read the rest of the series.
The Likeness isn‘t a read-it-all-in-one-sitting grip-the-pages-til-your-knuckles-turn-white thriller. It‘s one to pick up when you‘re looking for a more complex story, one that weaves together police procedure and Gothic intrigue and psychological games. Even if the twists didn‘t surprise me, the whole of the novel sure did. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-likeness-tana-french/
Sick-ish days mean old lady kitty snuggles and old favorite book re-reads for recovery in between work meetings
This was a long one too. I thought the storyline was interesting though. It always amazes me how one person can be so persuasive and charismatic and get people to follow along with anything he does or says. I recommend this book. #SeriesLove2023 @TheSpineView @Andrew65
“In ‘In the Woods‘, Cassie Maddox has transferred out of the Dublin Murder Squad—until an urgent telephone call brings her back to an eerie crime scene.
The victim looks exactly like Cassie and carries ID identifying herself as Alexandra Madison, an alias Cassie once used as an undercover cop. Suddenly, Cassie is back undercover, to find out not only who killed this young woman, but, more importantly, who she was. #DublinMurderSquad #series
Did I read a lot of French in October? Yeah yeah I did. Lots of good reads this month honestly.
The second book in the Dublin Murder Squad series. This book had a totally different feel for me than the first one. This one delves into the world of undercover officers, as Cassie assumes the identity of Lexie Madison, her look-a-like murder victim. I liked how Cassie began blurring the lines between herself and Lexie. I liked the atmosphere in the house the roommates owned. It provided an intriguing look at the insular life they led.
Currently reading The Likeness. Next up Blindsighted. August was a slow reading month but I‘m hoping to get back in the groove with the upcoming 3 day weekend!
It‘s a bit wordy at times and the premise is a bit hard to buy, but I liked it enough to read The Witch Elm next.
About to start this one…as soon as I can get this sassy girl to move. Haven‘t read French before, but I pulled out five other books and wasn‘t in the mood for any of them.
This was my #bookhaul from a library sale a few weeks ago! I also got my husband, the philosophy professor, a super fun and nerdy coloring book 😆
First, this book was too long & takes forever to come to the point. However, I LOVED the Fabulous Four & wanted to live w them in intellectual splendor. The central problem of Cassie's old undercover identity popping up in a real (dead) person was interesting & creative. I loved seeing Frank in this as I had just read his story and it was good to see him purely through professional eyes. Bottom line: I really enjoyed the ride but the resolution ⬇️
Diving in! I know that this is the second book in a series and I haven‘t read the first book and that‘s okay! In fact, it will be a true testament to a great story if I like it so much that I want to read the first book.
One of my favorite series. Just one more left of the Dublin Murder Squad. I watched this on Starz, as well and really enjoyed it-very true to the book.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘ve only read two other Tana French books, and was blown away by her character development and atmospheric settings. The writing is quite good here, too, if long-winded, BUT this story is dumb. Completely unbelievable and rather anticlimactic. Will it deter me from reading #DublinMurderSquad book 3? Absolutely not. I believe this is just a weak link in an otherwise sturdy chain.
The premise is a bit farfetched, but still an intriguing and atmospheric crime novel. I missed the character of Rob from book #1, but this was still a good read.
Really enjoyed the second installment of the Dublin Murder Squad series. The characters were well rounded and the mystery compelling. I wanted to know who dunnit but, at the same time, didn‘t want the story to end as I wanted to spend more time with the characters.
Today's prompt #Thriller One of my favorite thriller authors. #LittensDressedinBlood @MidnightBookGirl
Soooo verbose. Page 357 and I cannot fathom about what is this author going to ramble for another 70 pages. Dud
I finally finished The Likeness by Tana French, and I LOVED it. I cannot wait to read more of her books. I give this book five stars!!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Jan 2021 - watched before I read - deeper than what was blended into the series. Interesting and dark.
I loved this book - 2nd in the Dublin Mystery series by Tana French. Now important proviso - I don‘t read thrillers because I don‘t like a fast paced, adrenaline filled read - so these are slowly evolving character study types of mysteries - with lots of ambience. Might be a bit slow for some mystery fans. Weird coincidence is I just read a Barbara Vine mystery with a similar set-up - 2 girls & 3 guys, living in an old manor one had inherited. ⬇️
I enjoyed this even more than the first Dublin Murder Squad novel.... A highly implausible premise, but completely mesmerising! It also made me yearn for those days when you have a really close group of friends and you think everything will be the same forever... Sigh.
Also, scored a line in #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks 😁
After two stressful (but good) weeks helping out my sister's family in Ohio after she had a dramatic surgery, I took a mini-vacation to my favorite North Carolina apple orchard and the surrounding area. I haven't been in a few years, and while lots of things were different thanks to COVID, the barbecue was as good as always. #somuchpackaging #scarathalon2020 #teamslaughter @Clwojick
Pickle guacamole (or PICKLEMOLE) is a thing that exists in the world. Not creepy, unlike this book. #scarathalon2020 #teamslaughter @Clwojick
I really liked the mystery, setting, and characters in this book but thought it could have been a lot shorter. The narrator of the audiobook was wonderful.#Scarathlon2020 #TeamSlaughter #BookspinBINGO #Screamathon
In the second of the Dublin murder series Cassie Maddox goes under cover to discover a murderer when her doppelganger is found dead.
I loved the premise of this one and it was well written but far too long. This felt like a bit of a slog at times (and that might have something to do with my current frame of mind) and I think that this affected suspense.
I did this as an audiobook and the Irish accent of the narrator was fabulous.
This is the second in the Dublin Murder Squad series not that you need to read that one first. I enjoy French‘s writing style the storyline was very intriguing, as a mystery/thriller, should be. The characters reminded me of the young people from Normal People but just a little older. But... this was a whopping 600+ pages and IMO needed a brutal edit. I want my mysteries to be sharp and snappy, this was not that.
Book #45: Had trouble with the believability of the main premise of this story which took me out of it some but a solid murder mystery nonetheless.
I think I loved this even more than the first book. I just love the way Tana French writes and the idea of going undercover as a dead student who you is like your identical twin and trying to find out who murdered her by living her life kept me tense the entire way through. So good!
Finally some sunny weather and time to read outside. It‘s been a long cold winter. We‘re still in lockdown but at least the sun is shining.
For some reason Ireland is showing up all over my social media today (not that I‘m complaining), so here‘s a rather unromantic picture of the Dublin harbor from our trip last year. The lines on the window are from a light morning rain.
Day 15 of #20series20days also often looks at the underbelly of that lovely city. #Top20series
Thank you so much Jee! You could not have chosen a better surprise. It has taken all of my self control not to buy it so having it magically appear on my doorstep is such a treat. This has been a largely unfun month so I haven‘t been reading as much but I am so excited about this book that I am claiming some me time this weekend to devour it. Thank you again my friend.
Book 89 I like Tana French's original, surprising mysteries. Her settings are well-written and important to the plot, though not as much in The Likeness. The story is about a cop, who looks remarkably similar to a murder victim, going undercover to solve the case. This book is long, over 800 pages, and really could have been told in half that page count. However, I was compelled to read. 3.5 stars
My table is messy and it‘s hard to focus on anything right now, but I‘m going to give this a try.
God I love French's writing. Didn't love this as much as In the Woods, but still really great.
Looks like spring but feels like winter so I stayed in to finish this one. I find it dragged way too much compared to French‘s other books but I still really enjoyed it! Mysteries are keeping me sane during quarantine! #weekendreads
