From subway to Broadway to happily ever after. Modern love in all its thrill, hilarity, and uncertainty has never been so compulsively readable as in New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Christina Laurens (Beautiful Bastard, Dating You / Hating You) new romance. Marriages of convenience are soinconvenient. Rescued by Calvin McLoughlin from a would-be subway attacker, Holland Bakker pays the brilliant musician back by pulling some of her errand-girl strings and getting him an audition with a bigtime musical director. When the tryout goes better than even Holland could have imagined, Calvin is set for a great entry into Broadwayuntil he admits his student visa has expired and hes in the country illegally. Holland impulsively offers to wed the Irishman to keep him in New York, her growing infatuation a secret only to him. As their relationship evolves from awkward roommates to besotted lovers, Calvin becomes the darling of Broadway. In the middle of the theatrics and the acting-not-acting, what will it take for Holland and Calvin to realize that they both stopped pretending a long time ago?

I enjoyed this! For going in blind, just as a general fan of the Christina Lauren duo, I was thoroughly entertained (although I almost feel like the title doesn't totally fit, because the plot wasn't anything I would have guessed, but that's nitpicky). Overall it was great - loved the busker to Broadway angle, the chemistry between the MCs, and I'm a sucker for an Irish accent 🎸

Fun! The suuuper embarrassing moments really made it for me 😂😂 I loved Calvin‘s honesty/openness & thought it was a really great, ironic trait towards the end. They had nice chemistry & I loved her uncles. Also sad to say we all know a Lulu 🙄😒

It pains me that this is a so-so book. This is my 7th or 8th Christina Lauren book and this just felt off. Not bad but not great either. Holland has a crush on a subway musician, who is Irish and in NY on an expired visa. How will he get his dream job? A fake marriage of course. Premise was actually not bad. Just seems like the book ans storyline was rushed with no depth to the characters.

1. Do stacks count when the stacks are on shelves?? 😂 We just got another set of shelves put in so the stacks have someone diminished, but it's amazing how swiftly they reappear!! At least half a dozen stacks around here currently.
2. Tagged - I have a stack of books that are getting mailed away & I'm sending this one to a random Litten who had it in her to-read stack!!

#BookReport - Didn't make any progress with #ReadYourSign or #BookSpin, but I did check off 4 1/2 more books for May's #BookSpinBonanza (this is what happens when you read entire series instead of just individual books!), finished both my #LMPBC reads, and two romcoms (I NEED FLUFF!), including the tagged book (not pictured) as well as Our Stop. So a busy week, and special thanks to @Andrew65's #JoysofJune Readathon which has really inspired me!!

Yuki_Onna @TheAromaofBooks Thanks again for explaining #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin to me, and I also get #BookSpinBingo now 🤓😁, but I have one more question: How does BookSpinBonanza work??
I think that's all the challenge variants I came across so far. Or are there still more? 🤔 Any help is greatly appreciated!
(edited) 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Yuki_Onna - no worries!! So the Bonanza was only for the month of May, but what I did was draw all 20 numbers and anyone who wanted to tried to read all 20 books from their list in the order that they were drawn!! I failed at my own challenge (lol) so I'm still reading the rest of my list from May just for fun. I'll probably do another Bonanza challenge in the fall. 4y
Yuki_Onna @TheAromaofBooks 😂 Failing at your own challenge sounds a lot like me, too... 😅 Thank you so much for explaining, I feel a lot less dumb now when I'm browsing Litsy. And #BookSpin and its variants are such cool ideas! I'm assembling my list for July! 🤘 4y

TheAromaofBooks @Yuki_Onna - There are loads of challenges and crazy stuff going on all over Litsy!! I was super overwhelmed when I first joined, but then it turned out that basically everyone here is so friendly and happy to explain stuff, so never be worried about asking questions because this is definitely a more-the-merrier kind of group!!! 4y
Yuki_Onna @TheAromaofBooks Why, just like you! Thank you, that's so super sweet of you! Have a great weekend! 🙏 4y
Andrew65 Can‘t beat a GOOD romcom. Pleased to see the Readathon has helped, good luck for the last two days. 4y
Gissy Same here! No progress in my reading during this month. But I have enjoyed many activities outside and I even started to swim again at the beach😱which is something not easy for me. Still coping with my fears😳☺️ 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Gissy - I hope your swimming progress goes well!! I've never been a big fan of the water. My idea of swimming is to put my feet in and nothing else! 😂 This time of year is always busy with outside projects, so sometimes my reading gets put on the back burner!! 4y

So I am a total sucker for the marriage of convenience trope (if you have one, let me know!!!) but this was not one of the better ones I've read. It genuinely made me wonder if the author had done any research on green cards at all?? They were doing things like photoshopping themselves into pictures of a beach to "prove" they went to FL for their honeymoon...despite the fact that there wouldn't be any travel records to reflect that?? ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) My other favorite was that they were sending each other sexy texts to show relationship history... even though there wouldn't be any phone records of them communicating during the time period they were going to claim to have been in a relationship?? There were just a few too many logic gaps for me to give this one a pick, and it felt like the drama dragged too long. This was also a book that would have greatly benefited from having ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the guy's perspective. First person from the female MC's perspective meant we never had any clue what was going on in Calvin's head, which was honestly just frustrating. It was an okay read, but a bit of a let down.

HOWEVER finishing it last night took me a total of 2166 pages for the #JoysofJune Readathon, so I am feeling pretty good about my 2700 page goal, although so far I haven't read hardly anything today!!! @Andrew65
(edited) 4y

TheAromaofBooks @Crazeedi - Thank you!! This happened to end up being my first week off work, so I've had SO much more time for reading!!! 4y
Crazeedi @TheAromaofBooks good for you, relax and enjoy!! 4y
Johanna414 I just finished the audiobook of this and felt equally frustrated. How easy would it be to disprove a honeymoon in Florida?! I've really enjoyed some of their other titles but this one wasn't great 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Johanna414 - I've read other books with a similar concept that felt much more realistic - The Prenup by Lauren Layne and Green Card by Elizabeth Adams come to mind - this one felt like the authors just needed a reason for them to get married but didn't bother to think it through all the way haha 4y

This is a quick, enjoyable read, that doesn‘t take much brain power or emotional investment, which is quite perfect while sheltering at home and being unable to concentrate on much of anything these days. It‘s a fun little romance, fake marriage for a green card in NYC familiar trope. A nice, escape type read. (Photo is NOT NYC, but the view from my backyard.)

This is not my favorite Christina Lauren book but it was still an enjoyable read. This is also the first time I didn't cry while reading one of their books lol. Their characters are usually so dimensional but something about Holland felt a little flat for me. I loved her Uncles though! I would still recommend this one for a quick fun read though.

Finished “Roomies” at one in the morning after starting it this afternoon, which should tell you everything you need to know.

Super-sexy & feminist, with a relatable, passionate, creative, yet lost protagonist who needs to convince herself of her own worth. Also starring an uber-hot Irish musician with messy brown hair & green eyes. Swoon. 💚

I wish it passed the Bechdel Test, but it‘s truthful in showing how a female friendship can break-down.

I decided to read another Christina Lauren book for another quick and fun read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ despite the fact that it‘s a bit cringey how their relationship was built on a whole lot of lies and poor communication. Plus you know it‘s major privilege to do something illegal as they do and have it be not a problem at all. But nevertheless it swept me up and the whole Irish accent in the audiobook is a huge plus 🤣

⭐️⭐️ - Not the book for me. I thought I‘d pick up a Christina Lauren book as a quick, fun, light summer read, but I was left disappointed. I thought the plot was mediocre, the romance was ‘meh‘, and the storyline felt disjointed. Another case of me finishing it just to see what happens (even though you could have easily guessed the ending).

Alfrazier21 @monalyisha I‘m not huge into romance, but I had heard their book The Unhoneymooners was really cute. The library didn‘t have it, but they had this one...which wasn‘t my cup of tea. I read their Beautiful Bastard series years ago and remember liking it ok! 5y

This is a read of convenience. I came across a recommendation for the author (writing duo) and this was immediately available. Because my main read at the moment is instructive (vs. entertaining), I didn't want to listen to it in the wee hours of the morning when I was hoping to fall right back to sleep. So, I started this one. So far, I'm not the least bit invested or impressed. I may or may not finish.

Christina Lauren is a hit or miss for me. Some books are incredibly nuanced and poignant. Others can be a little convoluted and unnecessary. Roomies, however, was kind of a mixture. It‘s got an interesting romance trope (fake marriage of convenience), a hot, Irish street musician, and a reference to Lin-Manuel Miranda. The steamy scenes and sexual tension were 🔥, but the plot was just clunky and weird.

raelaschoenherr I so agree when it comes to their books! 6y
