Amid the turbulence of World War II, a young German woman finds a precarious haven closer to the source of danger than she ever imaginedone that will propel her through the extremes of privilege and terror under Hitlers dictatorship . . . In early 1943, Magda Ritters parents send her to relatives in Bavaria, hoping to keep her safe from the Allied bombs strafing Berlin. Young German women are expected to do their dutyworking for the Reich or marrying to produce strong, healthy children. After an interview with the civil service, Magda is assigned to the Berghof, Hitlers mountain retreat. Only after weeks of training does she learn her assignment: she will be one of several young women tasting the Fhrers food, offering herself in sacrifice to keep him from being poisoned. Perched high in the Bavarian Alps, the Berghof seems worlds away from the realities of battle. Though terrified at first, Magda gradually becomes used to her dangerous occupationthough she knows better than to voice her misgivings about the war. But her love for a conspirator within the SS, and her growing awareness of the Reichs atrocities, draw Magda into a plot that will test her wits and loyalty in a quest for safety, freedom, and ultimately, vengeance. Vividly written and ambitious in scope, The Taster examines the harrowing moral dilemmas of war in an emotional story filled with acts of extraordinary courage.

Mehso-so

What struck me most about this historical fiction was how the main character was a female but the voice didn‘t sound like a woman at all. She kept saying things like “as a women she had never listened to politics” or “it didn‘t effect her because girls didn‘t pay attention to that sort of thing”.

6. The ending! What are your impressions with the way Alexander wraps up the story, including the final scene between Magda and Hitler? What do you think about Karl and Magda reuniting at the end...plausible, or a miracle? #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Jerdencon I found it a little much that Magda would have been the one to pull the trigger but it did give some closure to her story. I think in the world of WWII Germany anything was possible and there are so many stories of people reuniting among all horrors and deaths that took place. 4y
litenthusiast I thought the “happily ever after“ ending with Karl and Magda was a bit too much for a book filled with such tragedies and reality of what WWII was like. I felt that ending left me with so many questions. I would have been more believable if she was reunited with her father or one of her friends. I also agree with @Jerdencon that it felt a little over that top that Magda would be the one to kill Hitler. 4y
CoffeeNBooks I definitely agree that Magda & Karl reuniting at the end was a bit much. I think it's plausible that she could have been the one to shoot Hitler, since she was in such close proximity to him, and Eva Braun felt she was trustworthy. 4y
See All 7 Comments
CoffeeNBooks Because Eva Braun felt Magda was trustworthy, she was able to be in close proximity and have the opportunity to shoot him. Hitler, too, might have thought she was trustworthy because of her job as a taster, and because she'd previously saved his life. 4y
Chrissyreadit @CoffeeNBooks @litenthusiast @Jerdencon @Librarybelle I am glad they reunited because a happy ending is to give hope to the readers that miracles happen. I think having her pull the trigger was interesting. I had never known about Goebbles children and that horrified me. 4y
Librarybelle @Chrissyreadit @CoffeeNBooks @litenthusiast @Jerdencon Karl and Magda‘s reuniting seemed a stretch for me, though I do agree with @litenthusiast that Magda finding her father would have seemed more realistic. But, I like @Chrissyreadit ‘s thought of providing hope after so much tragedy. Magda pulling the trigger seemed more plausible to me than her seeing Karl again. 4y
CarolineLovesToRead I too thought it was a bit much that Karl and Magda find each other and also Magda to be the one to kill Hitler but did love the storyline and would recommend it to others 4y

5. Cook teaches Magda about poisons. What do you think your reaction would have been to such training? (From discussion questions provided by Kensington Publishing) #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Jerdencon I can‘t even imagine! I‘d be terrified! 4y
litenthusiast Personally, I would have found it interesting and then reality would set in and I would be absolutely terrified! 4y
CoffeeNBooks @Jerdencon I agree! I definitely wouldn't want to have to go through that training! 4y

Chrissyreadit I think that brought the job to my mind in a way it never had been. I‘m also intrigued about learning about poison now. 4y
Librarybelle @Jerdencon @litenthusiast @CoffeeNBooks @Chrissyreadit I‘d be terrified, but it would be an interesting training. I have heard of tasters used for centuries, so it seems to be common for royalty and those with power to utilize tasters. It‘s something I want to learn about but not firsthand! 4y

4. How did Magda change in the course of the novel? Do you think she became a stronger woman? (From discussion questions provided by Kensington Publishing) #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Jerdencon I definitely think she became stronger because she was fueled by her hatred of Hitler as she became more aware of what was happening in the world. 4y
litenthusiast I think she became stronger because she wanted to assist her husband and help with the assassination of Hitler. I think she changed because after she left her parents' house she became more aware of the atrocities that were happening to people, 4y
CoffeeNBooks I definitely think she changed and became stronger, both out of necessity for survival, and because she wanted to help get rid of Hitler. 4y
See All 6 Comments
Chrissyreadit Yes she became stronger. This book also made me reflect on today‘s problems of anti semitism and racism- she was in a country where people were not aware of the atrocities in their own country. It‘s very easy to look the other way when you do not believe something occurs. @CoffeeNBooks @litenthusiast @Jerdencon @Librarybelle 4y
Librarybelle I agree with all of you! I felt she became stronger and truly listened to what she felt...going into this, she wasn‘t a big fan of the government. She built on this skepticism. @Jerdencon @litenthusiast @CoffeeNBooks @Chrissyreadit 4y
CarolineLovesToRead she became strong and a more likeable character for me. everything that she went through - being poisoned, loss of Mother and then Father and the other horrible events as well as she believed loss of her husband. so happy she was strong enough to survive 4y

3. Karl shows Magda the pictures of the atrocities committed in the East. Would you have believed him? (From discussion questions provided by Kensington Publishing) #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

CoverToCoverGirl Yes because it would be impossible to imagine that pictures like that could be staged. 4y
Jerdencon Yes - because i think he was trustworthy and she trusted him. 4y
litenthusiast Yes, because I think he was one of the few people she trusted. 4y
See All 10 Comments
CoffeeNBooks I don't think there's any way you could see something like that and not know that it was true. And yes, Magda trusted Karl, and trusted that what he was showing her was true. 4y
Chrissyreadit Yes, although I was surprised by how quickly she trusted him. That was a scary time and place. 4y
Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl @Jerdencon @litenthusiast @CoffeeNBooks @Chrissyreadit It‘s hard to refute evidence like that, yet I know there are those who do. I think her experience later in the camp cemented Magda‘s belief even more. She definitely trusted Karl at this point in the story. 4y
CarolineLovesToRead I would have believed him. But reading on I was so worried that Karl would betray her somehow. It would have been so hard to trust anyone at that time but so happy he did not betray her 4y
CoffeeNBooks @CarolineLovesToRead I was worried that Karl was going to betray her at some point, also! 4y

2. Magda has little choice but to accept the job as a taster for Hitler. If you were in her place, would you have continued or left the Reich‘s service? (From discussion questions provided by Kensington Publishing) #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

CoverToCoverGirl Both choices would be terrifying to make. Either choice could result in death. 4y
Jerdencon I guess I probably would have stayed out of fear for myself and my family... but want an awful job to have. I found it interesting that after a while it became somewhat routine to her - which shows how people can adapt to all sorts of situations. 4y
litenthusiast This is such a tough question because it is having to choose for your family's safety and work for someone who you despise or leave and know you and your family will be killed. I would like to say I would have continued as a taster and helped with the plot to assassinate Hitler, but it is so hard to make a choice until you are actually in that situation. 4y
See All 8 Comments
CoffeeNBooks I don't think Magda really had any choice in the matter. She had to stay and pretend she was allegiant to the party. All of her decisions would affect not only her, but her family as well. 4y
Chrissyreadit I think it was interesting to see how she was sent to a place where that was considered an honor by family members. I‘m not sure what I would have done!! 4y
Librarybelle @Jerdencon @litenthusiast @CoffeeNBooks @Chrissyreadit I agree - Magda really didn‘t have a choice. If she wanted to keep her family safe, she had to stay with it. 4y
CarolineLovesToRead Magda did what she had to do to survive. I'm not sure what I would have done but probably would have stayed as well. What other choice do you have. if you leave, would have been executed for not working for the Reich?
4y
Librarybelle @CarolineLovesToRead I‘m sure there were dire consequences for refusing, including execution of you and possibly your family. (edited) 4y

1. This novel provides a very unique perspective of Germany and the Third Reich. Were you familiar with “tasters?” Before reading this novel, how much did you know about the Reich‘s inner circle? #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

CoverToCoverGirl I was familiar with tasters. I read a lot of historical fiction and historical biographies- tasters have been used by royalty or highly situated people for hundreds of years. Although this is the first book that I‘ve read depicting how an actual taster would possibly think and feel- quite terrifying. 4y
Jerdencon I found this book interesting because I had never read about the tasters before. I guess I should have assumed it but it was interesting to learn more about it given that in history tasters are usually a quick mention and you never really hear about the people who did it. 4y
litenthusiast I really found this book fascinating because I never read a book about a person who was a taster and what their life was like. I new about the Reich's inner circle, but I really liked that this story was from a woman who was a taster and also that she was not supportive of the Third Reich, 4y
See All 6 Comments
CoffeeNBooks I didn't really know much about the tasters, and I've read very few books from the perspective of someone who is unwillingly enmeshed within Hitler's regime. Usually, the main character is someone who is clearly working against Hitler, while trying to stay under the radar. I really liked that perspective in this book, and I learned a lot by reading it. 4y
CarolineLovesToRead I really liked this storyline. I had not heard about Tasters before. I did know that Hitler was paranoid about traitors and spies but had no idea that Tasters existed. What a stressful job this was 4y
Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl @Jerdencon @litenthusiast @CoffeeNBooks @CarolineLovesToRead This was such a unique perspective! I knew the taster position has existed for others, so to get an even fictional look at the profession was interesting. Has anyone read Maria Snyder‘s Poison Study? The MC is a taster too (I‘ve yet to read it). 4y

A compelling story offering a unique perspective of WWII and an insider to the German government. There are parts of this book that left me turning pages rather quickly and other parts that were hard to read for the stark reality represented. The ending seemed a tad far fetched and too nicely tied together for me, but overall Magda‘s story is amazing.

Week Three is at an end for this month‘s #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead . Without spoiling anything, I‘ll just say wow (more comments below)!

Any impressions or thoughts as we near the end of the book?

I also plan to post next month‘s information tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Librarybelle There were parts in this third section that were hard to read - thinking of Magda‘s stay at the camp, followed by the execution aftermath she witnessed at the farmhouse. She is so resilient. I cannot wait to see how the rest of the story unfolds! 4y

CoffeeNBooks This section was so sad! There was so much going on, all of it heart-wrenching. I finished this week's section last Sunday and had to keep from reading ahead this week! 4y
CarolineLovesToRead I too have told so many people about this story. So sad to think that this was an actual job that some women worked. This story has had me thinking a lot of my own family and how much I would miss them if in Magda's position. Can't wait to discuss more next week 4y
litenthusiast As sad as this third section is and there were times I had to put the book down because I needed a breath from the tragedy, I also am loving Magda and her story. I keep talking about this book and the resilience of Magda. 4y
Jerdencon The third part was very intense - I‘ve read a lot of books about WWII but this one gave such a different perspective on the German people. 4y
Jerdencon I am almost done with the book - can‘t wait to discuss next week. 4y

We‘re on to the third week of reading this #literarycrew #buddyread ...lot of things happening! Any thoughts or impressions as we‘ve reached the halfway point?

Librarybelle I love that this is from a very different angle of WWII. I‘m utterly riveted by the story and actually found myself losing track of time while reading last night - that hasn‘t happened in quite awhile! 4y
CoffeeNBooks I read this week's entire section last Sunday, so I had to keep myself from reading this book this week because I didn't want to give anything away when we discussed it today! I'm completely captivated by this story and the characters, and I also love that this is a very different angle of WWII. I'm pretty convinced that Karl isn't going to betray Magda, but I'm not sure how his request for her to poison Hitler is going to work out. 4y
Jerdencon This book is so good! I don‘t know how much is based on fact but it is so interesting to read, I actually read this weeks section today (up to chapter 17) and I won‘t put any spoilers but it continues to be riveting to read. 4y
litenthusiast I am really enjoying that this is unlike any other WWII book I have read. I'm so engrossed in this book and am scared for what could possibly happen to Magda. 4y
CarolineLovesToRead Love this book. I finished it cause I couldn't put it down. I've been so worried that Magda would be betrayed. Love this point of story from WWII. Can't wait to discuss this book in full 4y

CarolineLovesToRead Im hooked on this story. I have read many historical fictions of world war II but not one like this. I'm liking the inside view of German civilians and soldiers. Can't wait to read more. 4y
CoffeeNBooks I don't want to say too much, because I can't put this book down, so I read ahead. I really like reading from the perspective of Magda, who has been forced to pledge allegiance to a party and leader she doesn't agree with. I was surprised by Ursula's actions, and frustrated that she put everyone else under suspicion. I hope Karl doesn't betray Magda. 4y

This was a book club pic, otherwise I wouldn‘t have finished it. It's a fictional account of one of Hitler‘s personal food tasters. Despite working for the Führer, she hates him and wants to kill him. The story is incredibly repetitive while also not making a lot of sense. It was an eye-rolling exercise in frustration. The premise is fascinating, but it's badly executed and the ending is ridiculous.

Book developed from 1943 to 2013.What I liked of this book was to see war from a German woman who was pushed by her family to work for Hitler. Book presents a perspective that no one wins in a war, there were Germans who were also victims of the war consequences. The book has some reference at the end.Author said "we must maintain constant vigil against those who use their power to destroy" There were romance cliché and unrealistic events so 3.7⭐️

LindseysLibrary303 I love the Once Upon a Bookclub book box! The Taster was actually my first one 😊 5y
Gissy @Theeclecticreader I love that subscription because it is for adult. Most book box subscriptions are YA books and BOM has a subscription for adult readers but they do not send packages to PR. I want to read the books received in the last s once upon a book boxes. The books are amazing! 5y

Thought that this book was good, had lots of information that I hadn't heard before about Hitler. The protagonist Magda was a passionate woman about her country of Germany, and she was brave and risked her life daily.

Crazeedi Added! Looks good! 7y
AndiM @Crazeedi I couldn't put it down! On a school night too! 😉 7y

Crazeedi If you had to read on a school night! 7y
AndiM @Crazeedi ha ha! I read virtually every night, I was telling the children at school today how this book made me feel..all those emotions in a book. 7y
Crazeedi Don't you just love ❤️ when a book evokes feelings, I sometimes carry that book with me for days. I've had 2 so far this year that did this. I had a couple last year. They just resonate for some reason. And it's not always that I see myself, I think the author has a gift of making the book come alive. It's like I've fallen down the rabbit hole.😊 7y
AndiM @Crazeedi ! What a fantastic way to describe how you feel! Yes, I do love it..but sometimes I find it difficult to find a book to compare it with. 7y
Crazeedi @AndiM 😊😘 7y

I am still in awe of this story. I wish I could sit at Magda‘s table and listen to this tale again. The story is written is such away you forget yourself and become emotionally invested in the story. It is a must read!!!

Read 73 pages in The Tombs today and finished it so now I‘m about to start The Taster. I just need 27 pages to hit my goal but I‘ll probably get further than that. Day 05/100 #100dayproject #100days10000pages

I had to do a Target run for cat litter, so it only made sense to go down the book aisle. I found these two. The tagged book sounds very interesting - World War II era woman who tastes Hitler‘s food, an official food taster to prevent poisonings. Historical fiction.

MallenNC The Target book aisle is always so tempting. 7y

This book. YES. READ IT. 5 Stars. I don‘t care if you‘re not a historical fiction fan, go read this book. It may be fiction but Alexander did his research and it gave me ALL THE FEELS. Incredible book that I highly recommend!

Crystalblu You are quite convincing ;) 7y
brittanythebookdragon @Crystalblu It made me cry and any book that can make me have such a response always gets my support. I‘m usually an alternate history fan rather than historical fiction but this book was excellent. 7y
Austen_Nerd I am reading it now and yes, I agree!!! 7y

Thus was yet another historical fiction piece that engaged me the whole way through. I found myself invested in the main character Magda. I cheered her on through the uplifting parts and sat reading anxiously through the horrific ones.

So far a beautifully written, engaging book about a young lady who tasted Adolf Hitler‘s food to make sure there was no poison in it! What a scary job!

I really liked this one. I felt this book had a very interesting perspective. The narrator starts out indifferent to what is happening around her and ends up working for Hitler. She learns about herself and the realities of what is happening on Nazi Germany, while being very sheltered from reality. I read this one for my book club and am looking forward to discussing it with others as it provides lots of talking points.
