Having finished Speaks The Nightbird, jumping right in to another McCammon read. Boy‘s Life. This is a coming of age story with a fantastic mystery plot. It is haunting, tragic, magical and uplifting. Definitely get those King coming of age vibes reminiscent of The Talisman and Fairy Tale. McCammon is becoming my favorite author. A must read.

Cory‘s summer vacation starts with a murder and only gets wilder from there.

I can appreciate the technical skill and the impressive setting descriptions here, but lord this was slow after the 1st chapter. We open with a murder, then nothing really substantial happens with it until the last 2.

Very slice of life, but a life where the peril is ramped up to 11. Chapters felt very disconnected, like ficlets. It had a Goonies feel to it. 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

I don‘t bail often, and I really wanted to like this one. But 150 pages in and it wasn‘t holding my attention, I found myself doing everything but reading 😕

Life‘s too short and there are too many books to force myself to finish the ones I‘m not enjoying.

1.) Read and do as little as possible because it's been one hell of a week! 😂

2.) Robert R. McCammon 💯

3.) The Outsider by Stephen King, definitely some creepy things happen in that one. 👤

I'm not sure how any review could do this book justice. A coming-of-age story about a boy in Alabama in the 60's, desperate to help solve the mystery that haunts his dad. This book has something for everyone - family, mystery, and a flare of supernatural. Absolutely loved it!

I don‘t know why I waited so long to read this one?! So good!! ❤️📚

This is a murder mystery, a magical coming of age story, an exploration of the changing times of the 60‘s as seen through the father (a milkman who sees his job threatened by a new grocery store filled with plastic bottles of milk! Gasp!).There is a hint of To Kill a Mockingbird in the way bullies and racists are portrayed and a satisfying comeuppance for those folks. Oh and the bike, Rocket, with an eagle eye in the headlight! A worthy companion.

My reading buddy. She lays at my feet or cuddles up with me on the couch..... until I try to take a picture. 😂 Had to get out some treats so she would sit still for a photo. The intense look on her face brought to you by peanut butter flavored treats. 🐕😁

I loved it! This is a beautiful, magical book, by an underrated storyteller.

Wow I didn't realize what a slow month I had. I have been watching a lot of Netflix and rewatching fave shows like GOT and Supernatural 😊

I am a believer that some books come to you at just the right time in your life. I do not think this book would have evoked the same feelings for me if I'd read it at 24 instead of 44. Beautiful prose, beautiful story, AMAZING. The audiobook narrator was perfect. My first 5 star read of the year.

Finished a lot of books this weekend so I‘m starting this one. It‘ll be my first McCammon but he comes highly recommended by people I trust implicitly.

This was my absolute favorite book all through middle, Jr high and high school. I've probably read it 100 times. This ragged paperback always brings a smile to my face.

What's your favorite underrated, unknown, ragged paperback?

It's a Bradburyish story about boyhood in small-town mid-twentieth century America. It's pretty good for what it is, but a bit long. I guess I prefer my sentimentalism in smaller doses.

This is one of my books I always re read every few years or so it‘s definitely in my top 10 of favorites !

As I read this book, I was brought back to scenes from my childhood; events I experienced; events I feared, events I dreamed about. I felt empathy, fear, jealousy and sadness.

Set in Zephyr, Alabama, in the 1960s, the story begins when 11-year-old Cory and his father see a car plunge into a lake. When his father attempts to rescue the driver, he sees a terrible, haunting vision of death. As Cory tries to understand how traumatized his father now is, his eyes are opened to the forces of good and evil in his “idyllic” hometown. It‘s a story of losing your innocence and the magic of childhood.

Day 21: #adventrecommends

Day 4 (and now I‘m caught up!) #Adventrecommends. This is one of those books I‘ve read again and again. This book felt so different to me than McCammon‘s other books. I‘ve given away countless copies of this book- it‘s one of my comfort go-to reads.

Gotta take advantage of today's weather! Also, an really loving this book. Spot on rec for that King/Bradbury kid growing up in a town with weird stuff happening thing.

Amazing! McCammon is such an incredible writer. He has a way of developing characters that leave me sad when I finish reading the last page because I don't want them to leave.

There is so much depth to this story that at first just seems like a coming of age tale set in the South. As events unfold, you become a part of a world where ghosts are real and monsters lurk in dark waters.

I can't recommend McCammon enough. Read him if you haven't yet.

This was just wonderful. If SK does ‘northern US small town, McCammon does ‘southern US small town.‘ Coming of age novel, written brilliantly in that way that shows all our hopes, fears and challenges as we‘re growing up.
Loved it 💕 thanks to Reggie - without whom I wouldn‘t have read this author and missed these amazing stories.

A great October spooky read! Definitely some of the same feels as Stand By Me / The Body.

It is episodic, though, which slows the pace but also lowers the tension.
