Splintered (Splintered Series #1)
Splintered (Splintered Series #1): Splintered Book One | A. G. Howard
This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girls pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowersprecisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carrolls Alices Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now. When her mothers mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alices tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alices mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own. Read all the books in the New York Times bestselling Splintered series: Splintered (Book 1), Unhinged (Book 2), Ensnared (Book 3), and Untamed (The Companion Novel). Praise for Splintered: STARRED REVIEW "Fans of dark fantasy, as well as of Carrolls Alice in all her revisionings (especially Tim Burtons), will find a lot to love in this compelling and imaginative novel." Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books "Alyssa is one of the most unique protagonists I've come across in a while. Splintered is dark, twisted, entirely riveting, and a truly romantic tale." USA Today "Brilliant, because it is ambitious, inventive, and often surprising a contemporary reworking of Lewis Carrolls Alices Adventures in Wonderland, with a deep bow toward Tim Burtons 2010 film version." The Boston Globe "Its a deft, complex metamorphosis of this childrens fantasy made more enticing by competing romantic interests, a psychedelic setting, and more mad violence than its original." Booklist " Protagonist Alyssa...is an original. Howard's visual imagination is superior. The story's creepiness is intriguing as horror, and its hypnotic tone and setting, at the intersection of madness and creativity, should sweep readers down the rabbit hole." Publishers Weekly "While readers will delight in such recognizable scenes as Alyssa drinking from a bottle to shrink, the richly detailed scenes that stray from the original will entice the imagination. These adventures are indeed wonderful." BookPage "Attention to costume and setting render this a visually rich read..." Kirkus Reviews "Wonderland is filled with much that is not as wonderful as might be expected, and yet, it is in Wonderland that Alyssa accepts her true nature. The cover with its swirling tendrils and insects surrounding Alyssa will surely attract teen readers who will not disappointed with this magical, edgy tale." Reading Today Online "Creepy, descriptive read with a generous dollop of romance." School Library Journal Award: YALSAs 2014 Teens Top Ten

What's everyone reading tonight/today?! 🌙☀️⭐️☁️
Also, does anyone have any recommendations for January's new fantasy releases?!

maich Just finished The Christmas Fix and will start The Old Man and The Sea. From cosy christmas romance to Nobel prize winner😄 10mo
5feet.of.fury Crescent City 3 comes out 1/30 & I‘m still working my way through Crescent City 2 (it‘s good though, I‘m pacing myself because it‘s the only read I have going just for me, everything else is a Buddy Read) 10mo
KateReadsYA @maich I'm trying to get more into classics. This one sounds good, I love books focused around the ocean. 10mo

5feet.of.fury @KateReadsYA yessssss the 1st CC was my favorite of hers & one of my favorites reads last year. The ACOTAR series- some I liked better than others, but the ones I liked I REALLY liked. Throne of Glass series I plan to start after I read down my TBR a bit. 10mo
KateReadsYA @5feet.of.fury I get so excited to read her series, but it's kinda overwhelming at the same time because I become so addicted that I can't put the book down. 😅 10mo
brittanyreads I just started A Court This Cruel and Lovely and I'm really enjoying it! It's a 2023 release but I've only just found out about it recently. There are so many ACOTAR readalikes out there but so far this one has my full attention! It's good! 10mo
KateReadsYA @brittanyreads Wow that's officially added to my tbr!!! Idk who this ruthless mercenary is but he better have a damn good excuse for leaving her for dead 😅 10mo

Full disclosure, it‘s been a while since I bought my copy of this book. As in, still a teenager a while. So perhaps my younger self would have enjoyed it more. As it is, I found the love triangle tedious at best and the MC to be the classic manic pixie dream girl protagonist we all got tired of years ago. Shoutout to the amazing, horror-tinged, creepy version of Wonderland though. It was disturbing and memorable in all the best ways.

Bibliomania I really enjoyed this series as just about 40 something but then I do read a lot of YA (I'm a bookseller) and the the time was looking for books with Alice connections! It's really hard to do but when I'm reading YA I try really hard to try and remember what it was like to be a teen.... but the reality is a while ago now 🤣 2y

So I started this audio last night. It‘s included with an audible membership, so I figured why not. It‘s a modern version of Alice in Wonderland. The MC great great great grandmother was the Alice who “inspired” Lewis Carroll. Now generations later the family tree is suffering. It‘s is the first book of a trilogy. #impulseread

I don‘t know what to say about this book 1 in a series. A retelling of Alice in Wonderland. At the beginning was so weird, dark, sad, interesting, the middle of the book was meh, with a lot of nonsense battles that seemed forced to fill the story. But then the end was interesting and cute that I want to read book 2. So it goes from ok to so-so 3⭐️I made a bingo with this one #BookSpimBingo @TheAromaOfBooks

I read this book in school and remembered it draaagging, but I flew through this in one day! Not my favourite Alice retelling (Heartless has top spot for that) but I really enjoyed the grungy, scary twist that works so well here. I shall probably read the rest of the series at some point, but honestly I think it would have worked okay as a stand alone. 4⭐

A dark and macabre retelling of Alice in Wonderland, Splintered is great for fans of edgier books. The white rabbit is a skeleton with a flesh eating disease, and wait until you see what they do at a feast. The word twinkle will never mean the same thing to me again. But the story is just as beautiful as it is brutal and I loved every single minute of it.

This one wasn't really for me. The romance was saccharine sweet and I couldn't take it seriously. The premise also felt like it was reaching to set up Howard's plot. It all felt forced.

Tbh, I also might not enjoy Wonderland settings. A Blade So Black and Hazelwood both seemed right up my alley, but I didn't end up liking them either. That said, I did like Heartless 🤷🏽‍♀️

Skyrimir I think the wonderland setting is a really tough one to do right. For me, books that take place in already created universes rarely hit the mark, with the exception of myths and fairy tales. 5y
ShyBookOwl @Skyrimir that's totally fair. Especially because Wonderland has an element of absurdity that is easy to miss the mark on. 5y
SW-T Interesting. I have A Blade So Black on my TBR but haven‘t gotten to it yet. I had a hard time with Insanity by Cameron Jace. Started off well, but I just lost interest and didn‘t care. I haven‘t done well with other Wonderland retellings either. 5y
ShyBookOwl @SW-T that's too bad. I may give up on them. If you ever get to A Blade So Black, let me know what you think! 5y

We haven‘t had any spring-like weather so far this spring, but thanks to my thoughtful hubs I have a little spring inside today. 💗💐

vkois88 Idk where you are, but is it snowing there too? 7y
GypsyKat @vkois88 I‘m in NY. It snowed for the past several days, but lightly so it didn‘t stick for long. The sun is actually out today but it‘s still cold. Where are you? 7y
vkois88 In VA. It snowed most of the day Saturday, but I was close to 70 on Friday, so the ground was too warm for it to stick. It was around 50 yesterday, and now it's snowing again. It still isn't sticking though 7y
GypsyKat @vkois88 That‘s not too bad in comparison, but I know it is for VA. I have family there and they‘re all unhappy about the weather too. It‘s about 40 here today and that‘s the warmest it‘s been. The rest of the week is supposed to be in the 50‘s and 50‘s though, so fingers crossed the worst is behind us. 🤞 7y
